G.A.A. History 153

St. Patrick s G.A.A. Club The earliest record of a G.A.A. club in the area on a formal basis was in the year It appears that the club i.e. Blennerville F.C. took part in the West Kerry League in this year. For a few years prior to that a team from the area played a number of challenge matches against neighbouring clubs. At that time the West Kerry League covered the entire peninsula both North and South. Teams from the Southern side included Keel, Annascaul, Lispole and Dingle. achievement. As was common-place at the time, competitions for one year often over- ran into the next and the 1930 League Final was no different. A record of the West Kerry Convention held on Sunday the 8th of February 1931 shows that the 1930 final was fixed for Sunday July 5th 1931, the venue to be agreed by the two clubs involved i.e. Blennerville and Annascaul. Records show that this team comprised of players from Derrymore to Clahane including Blennerville. Blennerville defeated Annascaul in the final, played in Castlegregory. A special train left Blennerville carrying supporters to the game. Prominent players of this era were Dan Moriarty (Dan Din), John Greaney, Bill Sayers, Ned O Donnell, John Farmer Sullivan, Dan Sergeant Murphy and Maurice McKenna from Curraheen/Derrymore; Charlie Kerins, Jimmy O Shea and Danny Hanafin from Tonevane; Pa O Donnell, Tommy Tiger Tangney, John Cournane and John Buster Brosnan from the Clahane area; Fr. Jimmy Duffy, Johnny Foley, Con Moriarty, Jopsey Lehane, Jack Mc Carthy, Henry Curtin and John Sayers from Blennerville. For the record the Chairman and Secretary of the Club, Jimmy O Shea and Stephen Falvey respectively, elected at the Club Convention on the 9/1/1931, were also the delegates to the West Kerry Convention held on the 8/2/ West Kerry League Final In the Club s second year in existence i.e. 1930, it qualified for the West Kerry League Final, which was a significant 1939 Over the next number of years emigration took its toll as well as retirement of some of the aforementioned players and the Club ceased to operate on a competitive basis, although a number of challenge games continued to be played. A team of young players came together in 1939 and Johnny Foley from the earlier team came out of retirement to lead them. Jimmy O Shea let his village field to them and in that year they played a number of friendlies against teams from Castlegregory and Tralee. They entered the West Kerry League in 1940, which comprised of teams from Camp, Castlegregory, Stradbally, Maharees, Ballyduff and Blennerville. At this time there were two teams from the peninsula competing in the County Championship. Dingle 154

entered on its own, drawing players from Annascaul and Lispole. The second, titled West Kerry, came from the northern area of the peninsula i.e. Castlegregory area. Unfortunately emigration again took its toll and in about a year ten of them had left Kerry, the majority to work in England. The panel in 1940 comprised of Michael Riordan and Paddy Riordan from Annagh; Pat,Mick and Jim Savage, Paddy Galvin and John Daly from Tonevane; Johnny Foley, Mikey O Sullivan, Jack Falvey, Charlie O Connor, Berty O Sullivan, Dinny Reilly, Bernard King, Tommy and Noel Cooper, Mickey Deady, Paddy Moriarty, Johnny Daly and Patsy Duffy from Blennerville; Jerry Reidy from Farmers Bridge; and Jimmy Baily originally from Derrymore. Mickey O Sullivan and Noel Cooper were on the (CBS) The Green team that won the Munster Colleges Championship in 1939 and Mickey O Sullivan captained the Kerry minors to victory in the Munster Championship in Jack Falvey later played with O Rahillys and won two Senior All- Irelands with Kerry. During the War Years the club again went into decline, although some challenge games continued to be played. Castlegregory District League Winners Records of the late forties are sparse but in the early and mid-fifties the club was again thriving. The club was officially registered as St. Patrick s G.A.A. Club in In this year the club was again victorious in the Castlegregory District League. The 1953 panel comprised of the following Muiris Moriarty, Michael Keane, John Joe Riordan, Moss O Riordan, Paddy Bawn Moriarty, Pat Fox Foley, John Foley, Dan O Connor, Eddie Hanlon, Michael Dillane, Paddy O Connor, Michael Horan, David Fitzgerald, Michael Knightly, Paudie Murphy, Michael Horan and Tom Foley. Around this time the players from Derrymore and Curraheen learned their football skills at Clasheen in a pitch affectionately known as the Polo Grounds, called no doubt after its namesake in New York, where the 1947 All Ireland Final between Kerry and Cavan was played. Success in the Club continued and in 1955 a milestone was reached when the Club won both minor and senior championships of the Castlegregory District Board on the 5th September The Minor Panel comprised of the following Michael Murphy, Jackie Baily, Patrick Williams, Billy Kelly, Charlie Foley, Don O Mahony, John Joe Sheehan, Donal O Connor, Connie Kelly, Denis Enright, Con Breen, Donal Shannon, M.J. O Connell, Christy Murphy, Teddy Kerins and Jimmy O Shea. For the record the 1955 senior panel was Jim Foley, Tom O Connor, Denis Foley, Michael Moynihan, Donal O Donoghue, Muiris Moriarty, Tom Ahern, Patrick Hayes, Billy O Donoghue, Michael Fitzgerald, Pa Williams, Con Kelly, David Fitzgerald, Jimmy O Riordan, Paddy Bawn Moriarty, Eddie Hanlon, Jerry Dillane, Donal King, Johnny O Connor, Muiris O Donnell, Michael Dillane, Denis Moriarty, Stephen Finn and Donal O Connor. The Club ceased to exist in 1957 but was reformed again in October 1963 at a meeting held in Stephen Shannon s house. The A.G.M. was held in February 1964 and Johnny O Connor was elected Chairman with Paddy Joe O Shea as Secretary and Jimmy O Shea Treasurer. The Club affiliated to the Tralee District Board and played in the Tralee District Junior League for a number of years. The Club reached the final in 1964 and were narrowly defeated by John Mitchels. The Club did not reach the final again until 1968 when Kerins O Rahillys defeated it. Players of this era included John Crean (Ballyseedy), Michael Moynihan, Moss Williams, Eddie Scanlon, Pat McKenna, Jimmy O Shea, Con Breen, Donal O Connor, Muiris Moriarty, Johnny O Connor, Michael Hurley, Tommy O Connor, Billy Galvin, Johnny Quane, Patrick Corkery, Michael Horgan, Noel O Leary, Tom Kelliher, Christy Hallinan and John Moynihan. 155

Club In early 1967 a number of people in the Curraheen/Derrymore area felt that with a young population in the area there was need for the formation of a club. This came to pass on 8th March 1967 when the first meeting of St. Brendan s G.A.A. Club, as it was then called, was held in Flaherty s house in Derrymore East. The following Officers were elected at a meeting on the 18th March 1967; Chairman: Con O Shea, Secretary: Martin Sayers, Vice Chairman: Jackie O Sullivan, Joint Treasurers: John O Sullivan and John P. Flaherty. A field was rented from Danny O Sullivan, Curraheen at a rent of 15 for 11 months. The name of the Club was changed to St. Kevin s G.A.A. Club, on the 8th February 1968, as there was a St. Brendan s Club already in existence in the county. A set of 18 maroon jerseys was purchased for thirty one pounds ten shillings. The senior team did not take part in competition but many challenges were played. The Senior panel comprised of the following players Paddy Joe O Shea, Teddy Counihan, Johnny McElligott, Tommy, Paddy and Mickey O Sullivan, Jimmy Savage, Pat Joe Browne, Con O Shea, John Moriarty, Francis and Paddy Sayers, Tom Ashe, John and Michael Enright, John P. and Sonny Flaherty, Pat McKenna, Bernie O Donnell and Padraig O Sullivan. The Club had an active Juvenile set up and fielded teams at under 14 and under 16 level in West Kerry. Michael O Regan and Jim Moriarty won under 16 County Championship medals with West Kerry in The Club rented a field from Michael O Sullivan, Derrymore West for a couple of years and in later years Con O Shea s field in Curraheen, next to Keanes, was the Club base. Con O Shea was the Club Chairman for the period of its existence. The Club was well served by excellent secretaries namely, Martin Sayers in 1967, Tommy O Sullivan in 1968, 1969 and 1973, Michael O Regan in 1970 and 1971 and Denis Healy in Jim Savage was Vice-Chairman of the Club from 1968 to An annual match between the veterans and younger players was played for the Silver Swan Cup kindly donated by John Keane. In 1970 the veterans comprised of Mick Heffernan, Bernie O Donnell, Denis Moriarty, Eddie Scanlon, Paddy O Sullivan, Con O Shea, Michael Enright, Jimmy Murphy, Timmy Kerins, Jackie O Sullivan, John O Sullivan and Christy Browne. 7 Club funds were raised originally by house to house collection and writing to people from the area who had emigrated and who were very supportive. On St. Patrick s Day 1968 a greyhound pup donated by Con O Shea was raffled. Over the following years numerous dances were run to raise funds. The first Social was held in the Grand Hotel on the 11th of January 1969 with tickets costing 1. It was a great success and went on to be held annually thereafter. Under-12 Bord na nóg Winners, 1979 The excellent youth policies pursued by St. Pats in the seventies bore fruit in 1979 with the winning of the Under- 12 Bord na nóg Competition. The Club fostered a community spirit in the locality, which was to prove invaluable when financial support was needed in the eighties to purchase and develop facilities. Amalgamation : St. Pat s and St. Kevin s G.A.A. Clubs St. Kevins amalgamated with St. Pats in 1973 under the Chairmanship of Con O Shea. Prominent players at this time were Dan Healy who played with the Kerry minors in 1970, Donal Connor, Noel O Leary, Tony O Donoghue, Denis Healy, Sonny Flaherty, P.J. Higgins, Paddy Joe O Shea, Danny Walsh, Mossy Brosnan, Christy Hallinan, Teddy Counihan, Bertie Moriarty and William Counihan to mention but a few. The Club went on tour for the first time in 1974 when it visited London. This was a very successful venture, stories of which are still being told to this time. During the seventies St. Pats played in the Tralee District Board Junior League. The amalgamated Club received great support and numerous inter club leagues and seven a sides were played during these years. Con O Shea was a vibrant Chairman and was a major loss to the Club and his family on his untimely death in He left a legacy of a well organised club, united from Derrymore to Lohercannon with one aim, the success of football in the area. On Con s death, Mossie Brosnan took over as Chairman with Noel O Leary as secretary in 1978 and Stephen Healy in Jimmy Savage was Club Treasurer during these years, a position he continues to hold to the present day. The club was on a sound footing as it faced the new decade of the eighties. ST. New Pitch 1982 In 1980 St. Pats purchased land at Tonevane from Mr. Jim Savage with a view to developing its own pitch. This was the first time ever that the G.A.A. owned property in the locality. The practice had always been to rent a field. In this context we must thank Mr. Paddy Hurley of Tonevane who facilitated us with a pitch for many years in the seventies and early eighties. In 1982 Mr. Jimmy Duffy very kindly agreed to sell approximately 4 acres in the village of Blennerville for development as a playing pitch. This was deemed to be an ideal location and the sale was agreed at 157

34,000. The initiative taken by the Secretary/P.R.O. of the time, Peter Breen, in negotiating the purchase is worthy of note. The Chairman of a hard working group of Club Officers and Committee was Mossie Brosnan. We record our thanks to Mr. Duffy and indeed to his late father Mr. Charlie Duffy who had for many years made the same pitch available to the G.A.A. in the locality. The property at Tonevane was then placed on the market and serious fund-raising commenced. The Club published the first of a yearly series of Newsletters to inform the community of the developments and to help promote 6 monthly fund-raising draws at 5.00 per month. The prizes for the 1983 draws were attractive holidays abroad or 400 in cash. The 1984 draws included a special prize of a new Fiat Panda car. The Club debt stood at over 30,000. In 1983 Mr. Thomas Williams very kindly made the cottage, now converted into our clubhouse, available for the Club to purchase. We record our thanks to Mr. Williams. We also record here the generosity of Jeremiah and Sheila Griffin who donated the extra land needed to extend the cottage. By the G.A.A. Centenary Year of 1984, St. Pats were therefore proud owners of their own pitch and clubhouse. Mr. George Hayes of Derrymore designed a new Club Crest in On the playing field we were admitted to the St. Brendan s District Board in Our young players were showing a lot of promise. Seamus O Sullivan played for the Kerry Minors in Our under 14 team represented Kerry in Féile na n-óg in Cavan the same year. Success at senior level could surely not be far away. from Annagh. Six young people were employed. In the spring of 1986 sandstones were gathered from the frozen mountain top for the front wall of the pitch. St. Pat s Treasurer, Christy Murphy, administered the project. The official opening of the new St. Pat s Clubhouse was performed by Pronnsias Mac an Riogh, Cathaoirleach Choiste Chontae Chiarraí on Sunday, 3rd August This was preceded by the celebration of Mass and blessing by an tathair Pádraig Ó Siochrú. A reception followed, hosted by the ladies of the Derryquay I.C.A., which was typical of the co-operation that existed within the community. Club of The Year Award 1986 The work of the Club and its community focus were recognised later on in 1986, when the Club won the prestigious Club Of The Year Award. The award was presented to Club Chairman, Joe Foley by Mr. Ronnie Delaney, Chairman of Cospóir and Mr. Maurice Dorney, Southern Area Manager, Cantrell and Cochrane (Sponsors). Mr Delaney was of course the Olympic Gold Medallist at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 for the 1,500 metres. Speaking at the presentation, Mr. Delaney said that voluntary effort is the backbone of sport. St. Pats were narrowly beaten for promotion in the County League in 1986 and remained in Division 4B. Clubhouse Project 1985 Work on converting the old cottage, purchased from Thomas Williams, into a clubhouse began on 24th June An Comhairle Oiliúna adopted the work as a community project. The foreman was Mr. Tom O Riordan Tommy Doyle and Charlie Nelligan brought the Sam Maguire to the clubhouse and received an ecstatic welcome. This was of course the last All-Ireland to be won by the great Golden Years Kerry Team. The first Community Playgroup in St Pat s Clubhouse opened on Monday, 1st September

Joe Foley and Gerard Savage were Chairman and Secretary respectively in the years 1985 and St. Pat s Minors narrowly lost to Valentia in the County League Final of This game was played in Glenbeigh and was a thriller. Valentia emerged victorious by a single point. This team was later to provide several players for the very successful St. Pat s Senior team of the late eighties and early nineties. The minors also lost the 1988 County League Final against Renard-Foilmore. The U-12 panel of the same year were a hugely successful group of players and the hard work of Denis Healy as trainer and Peter Breen as selector paid rich dividends, claiming three titles. On 16th May,1988 Aiden Dillane led the team to the Tralee District League title. Tommy O Donoghue captained the side to win the Bord na nóg competition on 19th June and Martin Moriarty received the St. Brendan s Board title on behalf of the panel. The full U- 12 panel of 1988 included; - Fergus Healy, Mark Curtin, James Costello, Kieran O Shea, Brendan Galvin, Tony Fleming, Padraig Hayes, Neil Flynn, Padraig O Sullivan, Roger Farmer, Michael Sugrue, Tommy O Donoghue, Martin Moriarty, Aiden Dillane, Pat Griffin, Alan O Riordan, Peter Breen, Kevin O Connor, Thomas Spillane and Helen O Shea. The development of the Club continued under Chairman John McElligott in 1987 and Mossie Brosnan and Joe Foley were the Club Secretaries in 1987 and 1988 respectively. Both Mossie and Joe were of course former Chairmen. GROUP PHOTOGRAPH OF MEMBERS OF ST. 10 Scór During these years St.Pats were very actively participating in Scór competitions at Senior and Junior level. We had many successes at St Brendan s Board level. However the highlight was Margaret O Shea s county final win in solo singing in Many hidden talents were discovered. There were many memorable performances in set dancing, ballad singing, recitation, quiz and variety sketches. Who will forget the late Timmy Kerins treading the stage! Timmy was of course, always a great clubman and played an important role in our development. Novice A County Championship Winners, 1989 Promotion in the County League continued to elude St. Pats Seniors and we were very unlucky in 1989 when we lost out to Ballymacelligott in our final game. More importantly however, on the previous Sunday, October 8th, 1989 we won our first County Championship. This was the Novice A Final: St. Pats v Kilgarvan at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. The final score was St. Patricks 1-7, Kilgarvan 0-2. A huge St. Pats following saw the St. Pat s Captain Ger Murphy receive the trophy from County Board Chairman Sean Kelly. The team trainer was Liam Sayers and the selectors were Tony O Donoghue, P.J. Higgins and Gerard Ryle. Michael Sugrue was Club Chairman. The Man of the Match Award was made to Tommy O Sullivan and was sponsored by Ger Savage of Savage and Wrenn. Incidentally Tommy O Sullivan was both a player and Club Secretary at the time and an outstanding example of commitment and dedication to St. Pats. St. Pat s Scorers: Tommy O Sullivan 1-3, Seamus Murphy 0-2, Colm Lynch and Eamonn Sayers 0-1 each. St. Pats Team: David Burke, Ciaran Murphy, Pat Joe Connor, Ger Murphy (Capt.), John O Connor, Seamus Cronin, Conor Ryle, Sean Ryle, Emmett Ryle, Tommy O Sullivan, Seamus Murphy, Mono Ryle, Michael O Callaghan, Colm Lynch, P.J. Rowan. Subs: Eamon Sayers, John Irwin, Dominic Spillane, Tom Quane, Kevin Quirke, Patrick Dillane, Bertie Moriarty, Maurice O Connor, Terry Boyle, Tommy Enright, Sean Moriarty, Patrick Foley. Kerry Minors 1989 Two St. Pats players won Munster Minor Championship medals with Kerry in These were Seamus Murphy and Conor Ryle. Unfortunately, Kerry were beaten in the All- Ireland Semi-Final by Offaly. Ladies Football Ladies football also began to be seriously organised in The trainer was Denis Healy and he began with under-12 and under-14 teams. Denis was an extremely talented and dedicated trainer. He achieved instant success in 1989 when the under-12 team won the County Championship. This was to be the first of many successes achieved by the young ladies of St. Pats. This team continued to win a host of underage titles including two minor county championships in succession as well as u-14 and U-16 league and championships. When this talented bunch came of age, it was inevitable that success would continue and under the tutelage of Paddy O Shea, Donal O Shea and trainer John Joe O Connor, St. Pats won two county senior league titles in 1997 and Denis Healy was also active as trainer of Kerry ladies teams in that era and he steered the county to six All-Ireland finals, winning four. It was a great occasion when Eileen Sayers captained the Kerry Minor team to All-Ireland success in 1995 and that panel included Geraldine O Shea (Irish Soccer International), Andrea O Donoghue, Dara Sugrue, Siobhán O Connor, Denise Poff, Caroline Poff and Grace O Shea all from Naomh Pádraig. In addition Geraldine O Shea and Eileen Sayers won All-Ireland Senior titles with Kerry in 1994 and Siobhán O Connor and Andrea O Donoghue represented Munster in

The following account of the historic community games trips to Mosney is written by: Andrea O Donoghue, Therese Walsh, Caroline Poff and Grace O Shea. The community games of 1990 and 1991 will be etched in the memories of the Blennerville team for years to come. The dedication of the girls was visible through our training and our fund raising efforts. It all began as a dream in one man s mind, Denis Healy. Our first competitive game was in 1989, but most of us were still U12 and ended up in fourth place. In the run up to the community games of 1990, we trained twice weekly in all kinds of weather. It involved everything from laps of the field, to treks up to the Iron Man and to running up and down sand dunes in Banna Strand. On the 20th May 1990 all our hard work paid off. We finally beat Kenmare in the county final, to go onto the Munster Finals, and represent Kerry. Next stop was to Dungarvan, for the Munster Finals and this proved to be a rewarding one, with victory being achieved in convincing fashion over Waterford in the semi-final and beating a Clare team in the final on a score line of 1-8 to 2-2. The travelling crowd from Blennerville went mad, as did all of the players. Our dream of glory was still alive. By now our fundraising efforts had kicked in and we all did our bit to raise money for Mosney. We spent weekends bag packing in Dunnes, held quizzes, sold tickets and did flag days in town. We approached many local shops and businesses also. With the help of the locals, we reached our target and we were all set for Mosney. The 1st of September finally came, so the team and our loyal bunch of supporters set off for Mosney for a weekend which would go down in local history. We landed in Mosney with the rest of the Kerry teams not knowing what to expect. We were all so excited. There were 25 twelve year olds dressed in Kerry tracksuits not knowing that we were on our way to making club history. Then the 2nd September came and we were ready to take on the world. We beat Roundwood of Wicklow by 2-9 to 1-3. Everything was now set for our greatest hour in the final. The final did not go according to plan. We were beaten by Cong of Mayo on a score line of 2-9 to 1-2. There was no singing, no cheering, we were all very disappointed and there were plenty of tears shed. The tears didn t last long. We celebrated that night when we had all recovered and were presented with our silver medals. The reality of what we had achieved did not hit home until we crossed over Blennerville Bridge on Tuesday night. That night the village was lit up with HAPPY GROUP AT THE MEDAL PRESENTATION IN MOSNEY 1990 FRONT (L-R): Community Games Officer, Rebekah Wall, Caroline Poff, Josephine O Dwyer, Denise Poff, Katie Spillane, Geraldine O Shea, Dara Sugrue, Eileen Sayers, Eileen Higgins, Natalie O Shea, Caroline Corkery, Helen Kelliher, Therese Breen, Sharon Crean. 12 bonfires and the whole community was out to welcome us home. We felt like heros that night. It was as if Kerry had won the Sam Maguire and Páidí O Sé was bringing it back West. It was all like a dream. We soon forgot about the final, the tears were all gone and we were glad to be home with our silver medals. Our football season started again in March 1991 and we had our sights firmly set on a return trip to Mosney. On the 24th May we easily beat Currow and had to play Kenmare again in the final, which we were lucky to win. By now training was just as hard as before for the Munster Final. The team wanted to go all the way this time and bring home gold. We beat Doonbeg in the Munster Final and everything was ready for a return trip to Mosney for the National Finals. On Sunday 1st of September we beat Donegal in the semifinal and we were all set for a repeat of the 1990 final, as we had to take on Mayo again. The final was played on Monday and we had plenty of supporters who travelled up for the final. We were all very nervous having been beaten by the same team the year before, but Denis Healy had us well prepared. We started well and all seemed to be going well, but that was all to end very quickly, with Cong getting 4 goals in the space of 5 minutes. By then our heads dropped and we knew that the gold had gone again and we had to settle for silver. The disappointment was clear on all of our faces and yet again the tears began to flow, just like the year before. It was heart breaking for us after all the training and fundraising to be beaten again by the same team. But yet again we were greeted by bonfires and music. Yet again the whole community came out to welcome us home. It was only then that we realised that these were memories that would last a lifetime. Trip to Russia Unprecedented success on the playing field was celebrated with a club trip to Moscow and Leningrad. St. Pats had the unique distinction of organising and partaking in a trip to Russia. The trip took place in October 1991 and was a fantastic experience, enjoyed by all who travelled. The touring party travelled by coach from Blennerville to Shannon Airport and by Aeroflot flight to Moscow. Three days were spent in Moscow. The party stayed at the Hotel Cosmos, which was a huge hotel built to host visitors to the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. A full programme of cultural visits was organised. St. Pats are one of the few Gaelic football teams to have played in Russia, when they lined out against an Aer Rianta selection in Moscow. The team included Michael Sugrue, Dominic Spillane, John Breen, Pat Dillane, P.J Rowan, Conor Ryle, P.J. Higgins, Emmet Ryle, Kevin Quirke, William Counihan, Gerard Savage, Tommy O Sullivan, Seán Leen and Seán Ryle. Ger Ryle acted as coach and selector. An overnight train journey transferred the group from Moscow to Leningrad (St. Petersburg). Here, the group spent a further three days touring and visiting the fascinating sights. Each night, the group reflected on the experiences of the day. There was great entertainment and as the nights unfolded, the hidden talents of the more bashful in the group were exposed. After three days in Leningrad, the group returned home and looked back on a visit to another world never to be forgotten. All-Ireland Medal Patrick Dillane won an All-Ireland Junior medal with Kerry in Patrick s selection was well deserved. He had consistently distinguished himself with St. Pats. Patrick is son of Jerry Dillane, a noted Blennerville player of the fifties. Newsletter The successes of 1991 were chronicled in an excellent 32 page Newsletter, edited by Jim Enright in February Pitch Development Work on levelling and draining our new pitch in Blennerville began in summer The contractors were Allman Brothers. Unfortunately, weather conditions prevented its completion. The work could not be completed until A boundary wall and shelter were also erected. Additional land on the western side of the pitch had been acquired in a land swap with Kerry County Council. Our thanks are due to the Council and its Officials. By the end of 1993 St. Pats had completed a development costing approximately 100,000. This was a remarkable achievement. We were very proud of our facilities and our achievements on the playing fields. 164

County League Promotion 1992 The year 1992 was one of mixed fortunes. Our biggest achievement was to gain promotion from Division 3. We lost a play-off with Sneem for the Division 3 title and were promoted as runners-up. The team captain was Patrick Dillane. The team trainer that year was Michael Sugrue who was also the Club Chairman. In fact Michael served four very successful years as Chairman 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992 with Tommy O Sullivan as Secretary. St. Pats go to the Dogs The Club organised a benefit meeting at Tralee Greyhound Track on September 11th, The event attracted one of the biggest attendances of the year. Mr. Liam Brassil and the late Mr. Billy Tansley gave tremendous assistance in helping to organise the event. Team Sponsorship The Club were very fortunate in 1994 when they obtained sponsorship from Jimmy and Mary O Shea of O Shea s Service Station, Blennerville. This relationship has continued for many years under the logo O Shea s Texaco County League Division 2 Winners 1994 After having been promoted to Division 2 in 1992, St. Pat s performance in 1993 was modest. The team and supporters were however getting used to their newfound status. The best was yet to come and 1994 was to be the year of extraordinary achievement. Our first County League game was against Glenflesk and we won by the narrowest of margins. Rathmore were our next victims in the first game played in our new pitch since it was drained and levelled. The date was 27th March, We lost our third game, beaten by Kenmare. However, victories against Kilcummin, Moyvane, St. Marys, Beaufort, Gneeveguilla, Ardfert and Valentia followed. This was some achievement. We had already won Division 2 before playing our last game against Tarbert. County Board Chairman, Sean Kelly, presented the trophy to Team Captain, Seamus Cronin, at St. Pats Clubhouse before the team left for Tarbert on 6th November The team trainer was Liam Sayers and the selectors were Tony O Donoghue and Donal Brosnan. Junior County Champions 1994 True to our County League form, we were also winning our way to the final of the 1994 Junior Championship. Having beaten Listowel Emmets in the opening round, we travelled to Templenoe for the quarter-final. This game went to extra time, but we won emphatically in the end against a Templenoe side inspired by the one and only Pat Spillane. The final score was St. Pats 2-22 Templenoe The semi-final played on 23rd October, 1994 against Knocknagoshel at Castleisland was a hard encounter, which St. Pats won by three points 1-7 to 1-4. Having already won the County League, our spirits were high when we met St. Senans in the Junior Championship Final played at Austin Stack Park on 13th November, Our celebrations however had to be put on hold. The bonfire at the bridge could not be lit for another while. We performed below par on a wet and windy day. St. Senans were 0-5 clear approaching the final quarter but we clawed our way back. A great free from Seamus Murphy near the end levelled the scores. We had lived to fight another day. St. Pat s Scorers: Seamus Murphy 0-5, Aiden Dillane

St. Pats were on top all through the first-half, but two late goals from St. Senans left them only three points in arrears 1-6 to 2-0 at half-time. This was after having played against the wind. St. Senans quickly drew level in the second half when they scored their third goal. St. Pats refused to panic and fought back with further scores. What has been described as the match-winning score was a cracking goal from Aiden Dillane for St. Pats. St. Senans never gave up and had some good points before time ran out on them. Final Score: St. Pats 2-10, St. Senans 3-5. History had been made and the bonfire at Blennerville Bridge would now be lit. St. Pats were County Junior Champions. A delighted band of proud St. Pat s supporters cheered on Club Captain, Seamus Cronin, as he received the trophy from County Board Chairman Sean Kelly. Jerome O Driscoll represented the sponsors, Carling. 166

Refereeing 1995 St. Pats were fortunate to have amongst its members Tommy Sugrue who took up refereeing in His first major break was when he refereed the Kerry County Championship Final and replay of 1983 between Killarney and Feale Rangers. He was also the referee for the 1988 final. His first competitive Intercounty match was the October 1988 National League game between Cork and Dublin. He was in charge of the 1986 Junior Final between Cork and Dublin and the 1988 Under 21 Football Final between Offaly and Cavan. His first Senior All Ireland Final was in 1988 between Cork and Meath. He also refereed the Senior All Ireland Finals of 1992 between Donegal and Dublin and 1994 between Dublin and Down. In 1992 he was awarded the National Irish Bank Football Referee of the Year Award. He was in charge of the 1990 National League Final between Down and Meath as well as the 1991 All Ireland Club Final between Clan na Gael (Roscommon) and Baltinglass (Wicklow). In Munster, he refereed the 1994 Munster Final between Tipperary and Cork. He also refereed the Munster Club Final between Nemo Rangers and Doonbeg. He was the first referee from outside Ulster to referee an Ulster Championship match, a feat he achieved in 1993 between Down and Derry and repeated in 1994 between the same two teams when Tommy and his team of excellent umpires namely Mike Sugrue, Mossie Brosnan, Peter Breen and Gerry Lenihan flew from Shannon to Derry for the match played in Celtic Park, Derry. He has refereed County Finals in all grades in Kerry. In 1994 Tralee Urban District Council accorded him a Civic Reception in recognition of his achievements as a referee. Tommy Sugrue St. Pats were promoted to the 1st Division of the County League after their victorious campaign in Division 2 in They were victorious in their first two games against Dingle and Annascaul. However, though performing bravely for the remainder of the year they were unlucky not to maintain Division 1 status. We were victorious in the St. Brendan s Championship for the first time in our history and the St. Brendan s Board Chairman Mossy Brosnan presented the Phil McCarthy Cup to our captain Seamus Murphy after defeating Ardfert in a replay. We also took part in the All Ireland Junior Sevens hosted by St. Jude s Club in Templeogue on the weekend of the All Ireland Final. This came about as a result of winning the County Junior Championship in We reached the Quarter Finals and were defeated by the host club who went on to contest the final We retained our Division 2 County League status in these years and we were victorious in the St. Brendan s Championship in 1996 defeating Na Gaeil in the final and in 1998 when we defeated the same opposition. Mike Crean was Chairman of the Club from 1996 to 1999 and Jim Moriarty was Secretary in 1996 and 1997 being followed by our first lady secretary Caroline Hayes in 1998 and James Costello won a Munster Junior Championship medal being a member of the victorious Kerry Junior Panel of The Club undertook a new fundraising venture with the launch of the St. Pat s Lotto on the 26th January This has proved to be a great success providing the Club with much needed revenue since its inception. Much of this success is due to the work of long standing treasurer Jimmy Savage. On the playing field 1999 was a very mediocre year for the Club in that we lost our Division 2 County League status being relegated to Division

St. Brendan s Divisional Championship 2000 St. Pat s regained the St. Brendan s Divisional Championship, the first of the new millennium when they defeated Ardfert in the final after a replay on 21/01/01. It was also necessary to play extra time to decide the contest with St. Pats eventually winning on a scoreline of 1-10 to Eoin McCarthy was awarded the Man of the Match trophy for an outstanding display in the full back position.
