3 CEO's Perspective AFL Victoria is partnering with beyondblue to start conversations, reduce stigma and increase supportseeking for anxiety, depression and suicide prevention within the football community. This follows research across the state where football clubs identified that mental health was one of the leading priorities for both players and supporters. In partnership with beyondblue, AFL Victoria, the EDFL and our clubs are working towards educating the football community on mental health and wellbeing. To kick off the partnership, we are proud to announce the first ever beyondblue Round over this weekend, with a number of initiatives planned. Talking about mental health is a game changer and we all have the opportunity to make a difference to mental health in Australia. With Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division in the middle of a split Round 5, Essendon Ford Division 1 playing Round 5 this weekend and Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 playing Round 6, it s amazing that one quarter of the 2018 season is already completed. There have been a number of unexpected results and we have seen clubs performing better and worse than pre-season predictions. Reviewing the results from the eight Tipsters on Page 4, their combined performance to date this year has been a success rate of 74.3 per cent. It will be interesting to see if their accuracy improves from selecting three winners from every four matches over the course of the year. With a scheduled bye in the EDFL Women s competition last week, we took the opportunity to review Rounds 1 to 4 of this first ever stand-alone competition. Of the 13 teams competing, 10 have recorded both wins and losses, which is an encouraging start. After evaluation, we have decided that all 13 clubs will play in the one division for the home-and-away season, meaning every club will play all other teams once and have one bye. We believe this is the fairest decision for the competition this year, with further analysis to determine the approach moving forward into The structure of the EDFL Women's Finals Series for 2018 will be confirmed and communicated soon. 9 Prespakis: Women Do Have A Spot In Football By JULIA MONTESANO FROM playing with the boys at Romsey to representing Vic Metro at just 14-years-old to being the captain of the Calder Cannons at 17. EDFL and Sunbury Lions junior, Madison Prespakis, has done it all. The talented midfielder has learnt some valuable lessons from playing at the Lions, where she played in her first all-female side. I think the experience overall taught me that women do have a spot in football, Prespakis said. I feel that with women s footy, it s bringing the spectators both male and female to the game. After seeing that, it just shows me that we do have this spot and the amount of growth that s coming through in local clubs, VFL clubs, and TAC (Cup) clubs is just phenomenal. Sunbury now has five teams in the EDFL, including one senior team in EDFL Women s. Her current club, the Calder Cannons, is the reigning premier of the TAC Cup Girls competition, and when Prespakis was selected as the 2018 captain, she was honoured. I took it (the captaincy) as a great opportunity, the talented midfielder said. I think it s another thing for me to grow in a different position, not just playing but leading the girls off the field. If they need someone to talk to, they can talk to me if they don t feel comfortable talking to the coach. Although she is only 17, Prespakis has had a wealth of experience in the footy world, and knows how to deal with the pressure that surrounds the elite component of the sport. I do feel a little bit of pressure around the media but I sort of just cop it on the chin, Prespakis said. Coming into this season, I just shut a few things off. I unfollowed a couple of pages just to get away from that media that was coming towards me. It s helped me the last couple of weeks where I ve just focused on my footy. In Calder s Round 8 match against the Dandenong Stingrays, Prespakis kicked two goals and was a key cog in the midfield. She has been among the Cannons best players every week, but is as humble as ever and praises her team mates for the year so far. We ve really come together as a team, Prespakis said. I did feel a little bit of pressure coming in as a top-age girl and having all these younger girls by my side, but I think over the past few weeks we ve shown the most improvement. This was shown when the Cannons played against the top-of-thetable Geelong Falcons and outplayed them for three quarters. Prespakis encourages all young female footballers to enjoy playing the game and keep improving as their journey in the game progresses. The 17-year-old s next step in her football journey is pulling on the Melbourne University jumper for the first time in the new-look VFL Women s competition. Her next and potentially last appearance in a Calder jumper will be at RAMS Arena on Saturday against the Eastern Ranges. 9 9 THE FOOTBALLER The Essendon District Football League Record

11 West Coburg Boss Backs Youngsters By LUKE D ANELLO (via Leader Newspapers) WEST Coburg coach Digby Morrell s faith has not been shaken after his side s slow start to the Essendon District Football League season. The Burgers opened the campaign with victory over promoted Glenroy but have since dropped games against flag contenders Aberfeldie (44 points), Maribyrnong Park (37) and Keilor (33). The club has claimed 14 wins in the past three seasons in Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division and Morrell remains confident his side will improve as the year progresses after a fruitful summer of recruiting. We just think we ve got a product that s going somewhere, Morrell said when asked why he signed on for a fifth season at the helm. We ve spent a lot of time building our young list and we re not flush with cash, so we identified when I came to the club that we really needed to bring all of our young kids back to West Coburg and spend some really good, quality time investing in them. Now we re in a position where we really need to try to continue bringing in some high-end talent to complement our group. I suppose we positioned ourselves in terms of personnel, in a positive position at the end of last year. In the past three weeks we ve been five goals off possibly the top-three sides in the competition, and we ve definitely improved from last year. Former St Kilda-listed player Daniel Archer headlined the acquisitions, crossing from Eastern league outfit Rowville. Muhammad Saad (Gold Coast Suns), Sam Spagnolo (Old Trinity Grammarians), Omar Saad and Tom Baravi (both Maribyrnong Park) also joined. Captain Dane Lucas has been a standout in defence, named in his side s best two players in all four matches so far, while Liam Bowkett and Sam Bouwman have also impressed in the back half. Archer has only four goals to his name from as many games, but earned praise from his coach. We haven t kicked the ball very well to him so far, but it s great to have a really powerful forward to go to, and that gives a lot of the boys moving the ball a lot of confidence, Morrell said. The good thing about Daniel is his workrate is first-class. For a guy who is 195cm and probably 105kg, his aerobic energy and aerobic ability is massive. His workrate puts him in a lot of good positions. We need to complement that hard work with some better finishing skills and give him a few more opportunities. He s really set a standard amongst the group and they ve enjoyed having him around. I definitely think his output and goals will be greater later in the year. The next month is likely to prove decisive for West Coburg, starting with this weekend s clash against winless Essendon Doutta Stars. We were really disappointed with four wins last year, Morrell said. We really set ourselves to try and win eight and put ourselves close to or if not around that finals area. We need to see that development in terms of wins and losses with our group. We re not kidding ourselves about how hard that s going to be, but we think we ve structured up our list. 13 Preview Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division By ADEM SARICAOGLU KEILOR v ABERFELDIE THIS 2016 grand final re-match has plenty of juice. Keilor s been the better of these two and has played exemplary footy since a Good Friday loss to Strathmore that in hindsight looks like a bit of an anomaly. Adjusting to life without Andrew Browne is something Mick McGuane will no doubt have several plans for, but the news to emerge this week around the transfer lodged for Ivan Maric is something to take note of. If available, Aberfeldie will have its work cut out curtailing his potential influence in a ruck-friendly league. What exactly to make of Aberfeldie? A draw with Avondale Heights and close finishes against Pascoe Vale and Greenvale seem to indicate the premier might be coming back to the pack. It too had some key players missing two weeks ago, so expect Adam Potter s men to come out firing after a week off. GREENVALE v PASCOE VALE The Jets are again one of the in-form sides of Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division. Their ability to produce quality home-and-away performances is proven and by establishing an early jump on the competition, the pay-off could come in the back half of the season. Injuries to key players curtailed their tilt at a flag late in the piece in 2017, so if the Jets can bank wins to secure a top two spot, they ll then have the ability to manage some of their guns before September rolls around. Addam Maric is easing his way back into regular senior footy nicely, but it s been the likes of Fort Caruso, Chris Farchione and Daniel Burns that have played consistently good footy to start the season. Pacco presents the Jets with a good test. Section Road could suit the Panthers, as there ll be plenty of space for Matthew Watson and Lachie Hansen to do their thing. The Panthers pushed top-of-the-ladder Maribyrnong Park to 10 points in Round 4 and will be looking to Ben Ross and company to give Watson and his fellow forwards quality entries. WEST COBURG v ESSENDON DOUTTA STARS - Radio Game Is this a winnable game for Essendon Doutta Stars? To even pose such a question might rile some up at West Coburg the wrong way, but those at Nipper Jordan Oval have been looking at this fixture as one to target for a sneaky W in a year that, for all intents and purposes, looks doomed. Douttas latest blow has been the outgoing transfer of small forward and EDFL interleague rep, Jack Landt, who this week filed a clearance to return to his former club, Sunbury Lions. If it goes through, it ll only add to the very long list of star players that have departed NJO in a horror six-month stretch off the field. On the field, the Stars just haven t got the cattle and it ll likely be no different here, as West Coburg is slowly but surely developing a nice list of a-grade contributors. Dane Lucas, Tom Baravi and Dinny Cleary are all having good years so far, and should be looking to capitalise on their early-season form in this one. 23 Preview Essendon Ford Division 1 By TARA MURRAY (Star Weekly) CRAIGIEBURN v AIRPORT WEST IT S the battle of Eagles and if results so far this season count for anything, this could be a cracker of a game. Craigieburn has lost just one game and could have easily been 4-0. On Saturday, they looked home and hosed after threequarter time against Tullamarine, before a poor last quarter cost them dearly. Other than that quarter, Craigieburn has done little wrong this season. Airport West, which is undefeated, has done what it s had to do to get the W. Its last match with Jacana was the first time Airport West was able to put a team away and run away with a good win. It was expected it would take some time to gel, so going through undefeated is a bonus. Craigieburn will present Airport West s biggest challenge so far and the game could go either way. TULLAMARINE v HILLSIDE This shapes up as the match of the round in Essendon Ford Division 1 and possibly of all three divisions. Both teams were expected to be up there at the start of the season, and they ve performed how they would have been expected to at this point of the year. The Demons, who remain undefeated, got the win against Craigieburn on Saturday, but did it on the back of only one good quarter of football. The Sharks on the other hand had a convincing win against Westmeadows. Breaking down their form this season, it shows a similar form guide. The two sides have faced Westmeadows, Oak Park and Craigieburn in their last three matches, with only the Eagles getting anywhere near them. Expect this one to be a close match, with both sides having several options up forward. JACANA v EAST KEILOR Two of the disappointing sides of the Essendon Ford Division 1 season so far. Both had high hopes starting the season, but the only points they have so far have come from the bye. On results so far, the two sides look closer to the wooden spoon than finals. The Jaguars have struggled having made the step up from Strathmore Community Bank Division 2. They have been on the end of three big losses and haven t been in any match yet. The Cougars have looked better as the season has gone on, but are yet to play well for a full four quarters. It s taken them a while to gel and the bye probably came at the wrong time. You would think the Cougars would enter the game as favourites on the back of better form. The winner will take confidence with the win, while finals would almost be off the agenda for the losers. TAYLORS LAKES v WESTMEADOWS Another match which sees two seemingly even-placed sides facing each other. Both sides sit 2-2 and have had some good patches of football. Both teams have scored a similar number of points and their points-conceded isn t much different, either. The Lions enter the match off their best performance of the year. Their new-look forward line gelled against Oak Park and they kicked 22 goals, their highest tally in a while. The Tigers proved no match for Hillside, which had half their team hit the scoreboard. Westmeadows has had players kick bags on them this year, and the Lions have the players who can do that. The Tigers are one of the younger sides in the division, which will lead to inconsistency that has been seen in the results. The Lions have been the more consistent team this season and showed some good patches against top teams, while on form, this week bodes well for a good performance from the Tigers, who have gone win-loss all season. 33 Preview Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 By ADEM SARICAOGLU NORTHERN SAINTS v COBURG DISTRICTS THIS is the Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 game of the weekend that has the most at stake for both outfits. The Northern Saints have had two weeks to think about their disappointing loss to East Sunbury, while Coburg Districts is inexplicably stuck at 1-3 after squandering a 15-point three-quarter time lead at home to Burnside Heights last week. The Lions only win has been against the battling Hawks and their draw has been somewhat soft. Chris Tankard s men have not yet faced the Saints and East Sunbury, and after those two games will take on top-of-thetable Moonee Valley. Whether we see Luke Vesnaver return is key, but while brother Matthew is kicking multiple goals up forward and Chris Lynch is having an impact in the ruck, maybe the Lions need to figure out exactly how he fits. The Saints are coming off back-to-back losses and need to re-establish some control of their home deck after getting done by Moonee Valley at Charles Mutton Reserve in Round 2. More pressure coming for the loser of this one. ROXBURGH PARK v BURNSIDE HEIGHTS Consensus is all things being equal, Roxburgh Park should get up in this one. 41 Preview EDFL Women's By JULIA MONTESANO ABERFELDIE v STRATHMORE Friday Clifton Park ABERFELDIE comes into this game with all the momentum after amassing a whopping 134-point win over Roxburgh Park in Round 4. But then again, the last match that the Mores played was their first EDFL Women s victory, which occurred in Round 3 of the new-look competition. In that same round, Abers upset reigning premiers, Keilor, bouncing back from their Round 1 loss against the Sunbury Kangaroos. Key players to look out for in this Round 5 match-up will be Olivia Madden, who has been among the best players in every game so far, as well as Amy Starzer, Jacqui Pearce and Sophie Fazzolari, who are all coming off four-goal performances. For Strathmore, Sophie Cachia has been dominant in defence and in the ruck, displaying some great on-field aggression. Netballers Rebecca Said, Sally Portbury and Ruby Pini have also been strong contributors, with Said and Portbury getting some key midfield minutes while Pini has been solid in defence. SUNBURY KANGAROOS v PASCOE VALE Saturday Eric Boardman Reserve The Panthers have started their season exactly how they wanted to, sitting undefeated after four matches. In their most recent win, they were able to keep Hillside scoreless while putting 116 points on the board themselves. Their line-up is much more experienced this year with the likes of Siobhan Carlton, Emily Bof and Bridgette Aparo playing in EDFL Women s, with many of them playing for Pascoe Vale at junior level. In Round 5, Pascoe Vale goes up against another experienced line-up in the Sunbury Kangaroos, who are coming off their first loss of the season against the red-hot Burnside Heights. Regina Said and Tara Crisp are some of the side s most dangerous goal-kickers. Crisp dominates in one-on-one contests and plays deep inside 50 while Said can hustle for the ball in multiple spots and find space to take the ball cleanly. In the midfield, it has been Tylah Bell and Bailee Said who have been providing important run and speed for the Kangaroos. SUNBURY LIONS v AVONDALE HEIGHTS/ TAYLORS LAKES Sunday Clarke Oval After four rounds in last year s WRFL/ EDFL Women s competition, the Sunbury Lions were second on the ladder without a loss. But in the new-look competition this year, they sit in eighth place with two wins and two losses. However, their most recent result was a key win against Craigieburn, where Simone Craige kicked two goals. Craige has continued from where she left off last year, producing some consistent performances for the Lions in the absence of senior players such as Natasha Hardy, who joined Essendon s VFL Women s side this year. Craige has been complemented by Sera Catania and Allayah Stowers, who have put in solid performances throughout the first four rounds. Avondale Heights/Taylors Lakes is coming off a 99-point loss to Keilor, but would be happy to have experienced a win against Keilor Park in Round 1. Rita Ceravolo has been the shining light for the side, being amongst the best players in every game she has played. Emily Val has also been putting in some solid performances throughout the competition s first four rounds. CRAIGIEBURN v KEILOR Sunday DS Aitken Reserve The Eagles had an odd start to the season where they sat fourth on the ladder without playing a game. This was because of a bye and an Avondale Heights/ Taylors Lakes walkover. When they finally got going in Round 3, they suffered a 93-point loss against the Kangaroos. However, Craigieburn has come off a convincing performance against the Lions, where sister of Moana Hope, Ellena was among the best players. But in both games, the star has been Kayla Glazebrook, who was named the best player by the club in the Eagles last (and only) two matches in the competition. Keilor on the other hand has played all four games to start the year, but sit in a position that they aren t accustomed to. Most members of the premiership side play in the NFNL, so the results for the Blues have been varied. Their standout players include Emily Angelidis, Sophie Freeman and captain, Christie Roberts.
