2 Acta ent. bohemoslov., 68 : , A FURTHER NEW GENUS AND SPECIES OF COSMETI D FROM THE ANTILLES : ARUCILLUS HISPANIOLICUS GEN. N., SP. N. (ARACHNOIDEA, OPILIONIDEA) VLADIMÍR ŠILHAVÝ Czechoslovak Entomological Society, Prah a Received November 17, Six genera with unpaired tergal armature on certain areas are so far know n in the family Cosmetidae SimoN : Cosmetus, Cosmetellus, Cosmetiplus, Vervloeti a and Trinimontius from the subfamily Cosmetinae, and Cosmetigryne from the subfamily Discosomaticinae. In the material of Antillean Opilionids loane d to me for determination from the Museum of Comparative Zoology (Cam - bridge, U.S.A.) thanks to the generosity of Dr. Herbert W. Levi, Curator in Archeology of the Agassiz Museum, I found another new genus, Arucillus gen. n., from Haiti. The unpaired dorsal armature of each genus has the form either of a solid undivided spine (Cosmetiplus, Trinimontius, Cosmetigryne), of a spine composed from twó joint-halfs (Cosmetus, Vorvloetia, Arucillus, sometimes wit h a terminal fork-arucillus) or of a column' (Cosmetellus). This unpaired armature is situated on the third (Cosmetus, Cosmetiplus, Cosmetellus, Vervloetia, Cosmetigryne) or fourth area (Trinimontius, Arucillus), other areas are smoot h or provided with paired tubercles (Cosmetellus, Trinimontius). Both Antillean genera of this group (Trinimontius, Arucillus) differ i n having only six tarsal segments on the first legs, while the genera occurrin g in the American continent possess always more than six segments on th e first tarsi. Key to the genera of Cosmetids with unpaired tergal armatur e Tarsi 1 with 6 segments 2 Tarsi 1 with more than 6 segments 3 2. Area 4 with a composite spine, sometimes terminating in a fork ; other areas smooth (Haiti ) Arucillus gen. n. - Area 4 with a stout undivided spine, areas 1 and 3 with paired tubercles, areas 2 and 5 smoot h (Cuba) Trinimontius ŠILH., Median process on area 3 in the form of a column (Ecuador).. Cosmetellus RoEwER, Median process on area 3 of other form 4 4. Area 3 with a stout median undivided spine 5 - Area 3 with a composite spine 6 6. Paired claws on legs 3 and 4 smooth (Venezuela) Cosmetiplus ROEWER, Paired claws on legs 3 and 4 pectinate (Brazil) Cosmetigryne RoEWER, Anal plate with a prominence (Brazil) Vervloetia SOARES & SOARES, Anal plate unarmed (Brazil) Cosmetus PERTY, Suborder GONYLEPTOMORPH I Cosmetidae SIMO N COsmetinae CAMBRIDG E Arucillus gen. n. Body robust. Eyemound low, smooth and wide ; carapace without tubercl e
3 or spines. Tergal region divided by shallow transverse grooves. The long process on area 4 composed of 2 tightly adjoining spines ; other areas, free tergites and anal plate smooth. Spiracles visible. Coxa 3 posteriorly with a row of tubercles ; maxillary lobe of coxa 2 with a small ventral projection. Chelicerae of male large, basal segment with a dorsal elevation. Pedipalpi flattened, femora with a ventral row of tubercles, otherwis e unarmed. Legs 1 3 slim, fourth femora of male stout, granulate. Tarsal segments of legs a 1 4 : 6, more than 6, more than 6, more than 6 ; distitarsu s of tarsi 1 and 2 with 3 segments, basitarsus 1 bulky. Tarsi 3 and 4 with a dis - tinct pseudonychium, paired claws simple. Scopulae absent. This new genus is related to Trinimontius SILHAVÝ from Cuba. It differ s in having a composite spine on the fourth area and a bulky basitarsus 1. Arucillus hispaniolicus sp. n. Plate I*, Figs. 1 6 ; Figs. 7, 8 Male holotype : Body length 5.6 mm. Dorsum (Pl. I, Fig. 1, 2) no t granulate, smooth, opaque. Carapace unarmed ; eyemound very low, without -tubercles or spines, eyes widely separate. Areas not clearly indicated. Areas 1, 2, 3 and 5 unarmed, area 4 with a large median spine which is composed of two adjoining spines. Free tergites and anal plate unarmed; abdominal sternites 4-6 laterally with a row of high tubercles. Operculum genitale smooth. Coxae 1 4 with low hair-pointed tubercles, coxa 3 with a posterior ro w of tubercles. Coxa 4 dorsally anteriorly armed with a large tubercle. Chelicerae (Pl. 1, Fig. 3) enlarged. Proximal segment with an elevation, laterally granulate ; distal segment greatly elevated over the dorsum, unarmed. Pedipalpus 5.7 mm long, flattened (Pl. 1, Fig. 4) of the usual form of the member of the family Cosmetidae. Sharp ventral angle of femora with a row of regularly disposed tubercles, other articles unarmed. Legs 9.8, 17. 0, 11.7, 15.7 mm long. Legs 1 2 clothed with scattered hairs ; trochanters 3 and 4 posteriorly with a large pointed tubercle ; femora ventrall y with very low tubercles. Femur, patella and tibia of leg 3 weakly tuberculate (the ventral tubercles larger) ; femur, patella and tibia of leg 4 with some rows of distinct tubercles, other articles inerm, only with hairs. Tarsal segments : 6, 13 14, 7 8, 9. Distitarsi of both first and second tarsi with 3 segments ; basitarsi 1 bulky (Pl. I, Fig. 5).
