1 Accelerated Biology Name Classification Project Period Date Due Content Standard 12: All life forms on Earth are organized into a hierarchical classification system to establish structural and evolutionary relationships between the organisms. Animals can be divided into two major groups Vertebrates and Invertebrates. Objective 12: Outline the Linnaean system of classification including kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species as well as the binomial nomenclature of the species name. A. Define the following vocabulary: Taxonomy: binomial nomenclature: genus: species: B. Describe the contribution that Carolus Linneus made to science: C. Come up with your own pneumonic device sentence to remember the correct order of the hierarchical system of classification from largest group to smallest group. 5 Last part: Cut out the 75 animal pictures provided on my website. Using the Charting Animal Classification handout, organize the animals from most primitive to most evolved: Invertebrates according to their phylum Vertebrates (Chordata) according to their class The purpose of this activity is to show a progression of more simplistic animals to more complex animals, and to emphasize both continuity (similarities), but also a glimpse of the amazing diversity (differences) in nature. Your project should include a cover page with a title, your name, a related graphic, class, teacher, date, and period. You also need a Resources page at the end, in which you cite any source that you used. This could be a book or the Internet. Example: Biology: Concepts and Connections by Campbell, Reece, Taylor, Simon, and Dickey; pages 314, 382, and ***Be sure to write all facts and information in your own words. Practice your skill of summary. If wording is taken directly from a book or the Internet this is plagiarism and grounds for receiving a zero on this summative project.
