3 Arctic / Yukon / Kuskokwim Salmon Fisheries: Permits Issued, Permits Fished, Pounds Landed, and Estimated Gross Earnings, This report was prepared at the request of Jay Nelson of the Office of the Governor. The report compares the Arctic/Yukon/Kuskokwim (AYK) salmon fisheries with respect to permits issued, permits fished, pounds landed, and gross earnings over the time period. Table 1 provides time-series data for the six AYK salmon fisheries. It shows the annual number of interim-use permits, limited entry permits, and total permits that were issued for each of the fisheries. Table 1 also shows the number of permits that were fished in a year. Each year, there are persons who renew their permits but choose not to fish them. Note the number of permits fished is not a count of unique individuals who fished in a year because more than one person may fish a permit if it is transferred in-season. Permits may be transferred permanently or temporarily, subject to CFEC approval. Table 1 also provides time-series data on estimated gross earnings and total pounds landed in the respective fisheries. Pounds landed comes from ADFG fish ticket data and includes only commercial catches. Catches associated with test fishing, educational permits, subsistence, or other harvests are excluded. At this time 1997, data should be considered preliminary as changes may occur to the data base. Estimates of gross earnings are calculated by CFEC. CFEC arrives at the estimates by calculating weighted-average ex-vessel prices for each salmon species in each AYK management area and for each gear type. These prices are applied to fish ticket data to calculate estimated gross earnings. Table 1 percentages for permits issued, permits fished, gross earnings, and pounds landed represent column percentages for the year. For example, in 1987, 832 permits were issued in the Kuskokwim gill net fishery. This represents 38.0 percent of all permits issued in the six AYK fisheries in that year. Some of the column percentages do not precisely sum to due to rounding to the nearest 1/10. Table 2 contains similar information as Table 1, except the number of permits issued, permits fished, pounds landed, and gross earnings are summed over the entire time period. Again, the table percentages represent column percentages for all six AYK fisheries over the time period. Information in these tables comes from data compiled by CFEC for their Basic Information Reports, which are available on-line at 3
