1 The Association of Major Fly Fishing Clubs 2011 JU E ewsletter All the All the Reports Each Month More Apologies Once again a number of numbers!!! when my keyboard failed to register the second stroke so 11 s appeared as 1 etc. Also I failed to include the Rutland Water total in Group One. It was 50lbs 4oz. Bob Handford pointed out to me that the boats on Chew DO NOT SINK! They have built in floatability (as I am sure do all the boats on the reservoirs we use). Also the date of the re-arranged match is for September 23 rd. How Long do Your Lines Last? Most of my fishing nowadays is with a floating line. My previous lines would last me between 50/60 days fishing (this works out at about 300/350 hours of fishing) For my last line I was persuaded to change to another manufacturer. Whilst the photo is not very good it clearly shows the cracking after only 24 days fishing. I returned it and the manufacturers who were very generous sent me a new line. (I had already had half my expected life out of it) I hope this was just a rogue line because it was the most pleasing line I had ever used, and the most effective. Is it unreasonable to expect 300+ hours of fishing out of a line? I don t think so. I don t suppose that it will ever happen, but it would be helpful if the manufacturers would include an expected durability factor in their information. A Wonderful Season So far! As far as things to write about in the editorial, this season has been wonderfully boring! Every match report tells of an enjoyable match with full teams. Most matches have been followed by a meal at which most anglers have attended. Reports of these meals are that they have been very good value at 8.0 a head. I shall be more than happy if the season continues in the same way. I do NOT seek controversy to write about. If I have one problem it is the few Winning Team Photos I have received. Lots of individuals but very few teams. It should not be a problem if there is a post match meal. More of a problem if not! An almost insurmountable one if very few anglers stay for the result. There s Rules and Rules Or is there Half way through the Group Four match on Eyebrook yesterday I was asked if the rolly-polly was legal. Somewhere at the back of my mind I seemed to remember a rule that the Rod must be hand held at all times. This would have the effect of making the rolly-polly illegal so I said it was not legal! Only looking through the rules a few moments ago I could not find it. Unless anyone can show me otherwise, it appears I was wrong, and the rolly-polly technique is legal! One rule I am sure about is that drogues, whether fixed at one, or two points should be out of the water when under power. This was ignored by some at Eyebrook. It did not matter because boat density was light. But when it is busy only being able to turn one way is dangerous.

Nevertheless, with almost every angler bagging up it was a splendid day s fishing. Tony Kirkham of Queen Mother reports that the day started with a light South Westerly wind and a dark overcast sky, but the forecast was for it to get bright and hot by 2.00 in the afternoon. The forecast was correct and as soon as the sun broke through the fish dropped lower in the water With the fish up in the water in the morning the lines were an array from floaters to glass lines. The boats split into 3 when leaving the pontoon, heading for Hook Straight, the dam and Bewl Straight. One of the best drifts was from Ferry Point across to Chingley Bank with fish tight in to Ferry Point, right out to the middle, however there were fish everywhere. Phil Hall (Queen Mother) with his Best Fish (He was also Best Bag) In the morning, floaters or slow sinkers were the successful lines. Various combination of flies worked, although pulled lure types worked much better than nymphs. One successful method was a booby/lure/booby combination. A Woofta Booby was very effective. So effective that Tony reported TWO double hook ups and all four fish landed. Lodge Bay was declared out of bounds. The fish came from two principle areas, The Mound and Middlemead Bay. Some anglers decided to stay at The Mound and bashed the stockies, others headed for Middlemead for the better fish. Various lines and flies were employed. The majority of the fish were caught on flies retrieved very slowly. Mark Searle fished Middlemead and had his eight fish by 12:50. His biggest fish was 6lb 14oz and including the time bonus his total bag weighed 29lb 2oz. He fished a Di3 sweep very slowly with a blob on the top dropper, cormorant middle dropper and alternately a blob or a booby on the point. Invicta won the match by a country mile. Bewl came second having pipped Grafham by 2oz. Tunbridge Wells came last. Mark Searle Best Bag/Fish (of season) Bob Holland hooked a duck in flight on the back cast at the mound within the first five minutes of the match. The duck ascended, at speed, over the flotilla of boats. After a couple of spectacular aerial runs the duck was netted, released, and paddled off apparently unharmed. The incident did not amuse the writer or the duck, but appeared to greatly amuse others. Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Rd 4 Rd 5 Rd 6 POSITION Bewl Bridge F.C. B = Grafham Water F.A. B Invicta F.C. The Wind The numbers of big fish Shuttlecocks All day a strong wind, gusting to over 25 mph, blew from the West. This made casting difficult and seeing small dry flies eye straining! At least, with only a few patches of sunlight the fish were high in the water. Three fish over 5lbs were caught, as were many of last year s stock which were in the 3lbs range. The largest was 6lbs 7oz caught on a red shuttlecock by Graham Bodsworth of East Midlands. There were two main areas of fish. The Main Bowl, which fished well in the morning. Blobs and sparklers did quite well here during this period. Shuttlecocks also caught fish here in the morning, and it was here that Graham caught the largest fish. The other area was the Western Shore around Mucky Bay and The Chestnut bank. Here Shuttlecocks dominated the fishing. o other dry fly pattern worked. Even in the windy conditions it had to be Shuttlecocks. Colour and size were only marginally important but the fly had to have that vertical profile in the water.
