1 UTBFN NEWSLETTER September 2012 UTBFN Board of Directors PRESIDENT Rick Culver phone VICE PRESIDENT Tom Nokes SECRETARY/TREASURER Cory Jones YOUTH Scott Hausman CONSERVATION Steve Porter INFORMATION OFFICER Mike Hendrickson at Kent Thomson wins boater division and Tim McClintick is top co-angler at Flaming Gorge The 2013 UTBFN State Team Qualifier was held July at Flaming Gorge Reservoir and consisted of 33 boaters and 33 coanglers competing for a berth on the state team and a chance to represent Utah at the 2013 Western Divisional in California. The event started out with the pre-tournament meeting and UTBFN sponsored dinner at the Villa Restaurant where everyone received complimentary gift packages containing lures from Cache Custom Lures, Bass Team Tackle, along with a UTBFN T-shirt. There was a sponsor raffle held just prior to the partner pairing that generated over $1100 for use in supporting UTBFN Programs. Special thanks to Triton, Mercury, Toyota, Motorguide, Evan Williams, Skeeter Boats, Yamaha, Sportsmans Warehouse, Quantum, Simms, Solar Bat Sunglasses, Flying Fisherman, Minn-kota, Dobyns Rods, Uinta Anglers Supply, Toyota Bonus Bucks and Keel Guard for providing product to help raise money for the UTBFN. Flaming Gorge provided some challenging fishing conditions once again, causing everyone to strongly manage their time and fish. Kent Thomson bested the 33 contestant boater field to take first place honors with lbs. Second place was nailed down by Jerry Frahm with lbs, Mike Powell finished in 3rd place with lbs, Larry Wilkins finished in 4th place with lbs, Don Allphin in 5th Place with lbs and Bubba O'Neil in 6th place with lbs and just out of the money but received a complimentary Dobyns Savvy Series Rod. Tim McClintick captured first place in the co-angler division with lbs, Shane Johnson landed in 2nd place with lbs, 3rd place went to TJ Hiatt with lbs, 4th Place had Greg Pink with lbs and Rusty Bennett in 5th place with lbs. Nick Boehme finished with lbs finishing just out of the money and received a complimentary Dobyns Rod. The awards ceremony was conducted shortly after the final weigh-in with over $12,000 dollars in prize and option pot money paid out. Thanks to all the participants for attending and competing. 2 UTBFN YOUTH NEWS 2012 UTBFN Youth Series Update The UTBFN youth season began in June at Pelican Lake with a strong topwater bite dominating. Many anglers caught limits and Woods Cross angler Cody Pierson sewed up the older age group title on his first cast of the day! Cody hooked into what would be the big fish of the tournament, a 4.11 largemouth that anchored his 9.05 pound bag. Tyler Rollman from Murray put together a 5 bass limit weighing 5.06 to capture the win in age group division. The second event of the season was originally scheduled for Huntington North, but due to low water conditions from this year s drought, the event was moved to Jordanelle to insure safe boating conditions. The always tough summertime bite dominated, with many of the fish caught reported to be suspending bass. In the end, Tyler Rollman was able to piece together a limit on a drop shot. Tyler also had the big fish of the day with a 2.06 smallmouth. Tyler s win at Jordanelle secured him the state championship in the younger age division by winning two of the 3 events of the season. In the age division, Seth Hausman from Sandy edged out Connor Burn and move into first place in the standing with one event remaining. With the final youth tournament scheduled for Pineview Reservoir on September 22 nd, the anglers participating in this season s final event hoping the fall conditions turn the bite on. Anglers will fish from 7:00 am until 12:30 pm to decide the final standings of the 2012 season. Launch will take place at Anderson Cove boat ramp, with an awards picnic immediately following the day s fishing. The top anglers from each age division will be invited to join the 2013 Utah State Team competing next April in California. We are always looking for quality people to assume the duties and responsibilities with operating the UTBFN - the current regime will not be doing this job forever, so start thinking about replacements now. Please forward all recommended changes for the 2013 UTBFN By-laws, Tournament Rules or State Team Composition to your respective club president, we are open to any and all suggestions to improve our membership and for increasing participation at all UTBFN functions and tournaments B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Western Divisional will be held 1 7 April in California. There will be more information forthcoming once everything is finalized and approved by B.A.S.S. Keep an eye on the website for future meeting dates and locations, all meetings are open to everyone to attend and they are in an OPEN Forum. Club presidents please put the word out and start collecting dues for the 2013 season, members must have their state and national dues paid in full no later 1 April 2013 to be eligible for the state team. The UTBFN is always looking for potential sponsors if you have or know of anyone that would be interested in becoming a sponsor for the UTBFN please send us there information. Thanks. Tyler Swaney is competing at the B.A.S.S. FEDERATION NATION NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP OCTOBER 2012 on Wheeler Lake, Alabama Just a reminder that if you see or talk to Tyler Swaney within the next couple of weeks to wish him the best of luck, Tyler is preparing for his trip to Alabama were he will be representing Utah and competing against 55 other anglers for the chance to become the Federation Nation Champion and a berth in the 2013 BASSMASTER CLASSIC.
