He wasn t able to attend the Awards Banquet in March. In the photo, Keith is receiving his award from Weigh Master Frank Adams. Congratulations, Keith! DONATION: From donations that came in at the fish fry in March Tom Heitpas presented $250 to the club at the April meeting. A committee of Don Barker, Tom Heitpas, Alex Montminy and Lenny Stahley volunteered at the May meeting to make a recommendation within the next few months about how to best use that money. DUES: May is your last opportunity to pay your dues and count your fish in tournaments. Anyone whose dues are not paid by the end of May will not be able to count their fish and will lose their membership until dues are paid. Weights lost during this period will not be reinstated retroactively. FISHING REPORTS: The Lake Washington tournament on April 14 had a good turnout, but the weekend high winds and rain made fishing a bit rough. Don Donoghue jumped the 5 pounders and went straight to a 6.3 lb. bass caught in Lake Washington, which will take some hot fishing to beat. Jeff Jennings and Frank Adams fished the south end of the lake all day and caught a lot of bream and, then, went up into the river later in the day and found more bream. The rest of the guys went south into the river, as far south as Hell-n-Blazes and found more fish. Bob Smithwick and Henry Wells fished Lake Washington and Hell-n-Blazes on April 17 and didn t do very well. They caught bream, but there was no size to them. Astor wasn t all it was hoped to be, although Lenny Stahley managed to land a 4.2 lb. bass; unfortunately, it was a long way from the necessary 6.4 to overtake the lead currently held by Don Donoghue. Lake Okeechobee is at 11.5 ft. Fish are in Harney Pond and Indian Prairie as well as in the lake just outside those two canals. Fish are also going on beds in the Kissimmee River. You ll be fishing on a dark moon, so

2 fishing may not be quite as good as it would be a week later, but that s not our option because of the holiday weekend. Lake Poinsett has been dropping about an inch a day, but recent rains have stopped the decline and if we get more rain than sun over the next week, we may see an increase in the water level. As it is now, you can still access the lake via Leroy Wright Park, but you cannot do it at Poinsett Lodge. Going further south the fish are there, but small. INVITATION On June 26 (Tuesday), the Florida Fly Fishing Association invites you to a program to learn about Project Healing Waters at Kay s Bar-B-Q in Cocoa. Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and veterans through fly fishing and fly tying education and outings. If enough people want to participate, the FFFA may start a group in Brevard. There is no cost to the participant, except for your time. If you can t make the meeting but would like to view a video to get more information, go to Dinner may be ordered from the menu at 6 pm; the business meeting follows at 7 pm; there is a 10-minute break at 7:25; followed by the Project Healing Waters program from approximately 7:35 8:40 pm and ends with a raffle at 8:45 pm. NEW MEMBERS: Alex Montminy introduced friends Frank & Mary Ellen Cunius who joined the club on the family plan. Although they are beginning in the Sportsman Division, don t let that fool you. Frank and Mary Ellen are from Pennsylvania and, although fishing in Florida lakes and rivers is a new experience, Frank has fly fished for trout in Pennsylvania and we understand he has quite a cast. 4 Note: If you do not plan to stay overnight, meet Frank Adams a little after dark (call his cell phone to arrange time and place) and he will weigh your catch from the second tournament on your way home. Reservations: The Flamingo Motel ( ) on SR 441 next to McDonald s is again advertising rooms for $49.95 a night. They have electrical hookups for your boats. Buckhead Ridge Marina trailers are not available for rental at this time. Directions to Buckhead Ridge Marina: From Brevard: Take I-95 south to SR 192 or SR 60 or SR 68 or SR 70 then go west to SR 441. Take SR 441 south to SR 78. Take SR 78 west, crossing over the Kissimmee River and entering Glades County. Shortly after passing the Buckhead water tower turn right at 14th St which continues onto Hunter Road and then turns into Access Road. Follow the signs to Buckhead Ridge Marina. From Orange: Take nearest route to SR 192, then turn south onto SR 441 at Holopaw. Take SR 441 to SR 78. Take SR 78 west, crossing over the Kissimmee River and entering Glades County. Shortly after passing the Buckhead water tower turn right at 14th St which continues onto Hunter Road and then turns into Access Road. Follow the signs to Buckhead Ridge Marina. Other Events: Friday dinner (05/18): Several of the guys will be getting together for dinner at Lightsey s at Okee-tan-tee. It s usually around 8:30. The restaurant closes to incoming patrons at 9 pm, so don t be late. They cook the fish you bring and provide sides to go with it for a good price. Saturday lunch (05/19) at 1 pm, Ed Stahley invites everyone to his place for a burger and dog cookout with all the fixin s. Ed is providing iced tea. Want soda or beer? Bring your own. Everyone always has a great time. Directions to the Stahley s: Park near one of the members who have a place at Buckhead Ridge Marina. Then carpool from Buckhead Ridge Marina, go back out toward SR78. Before you get to SR78, take Buckhead Drive to the left and go over one street to Lake Drive and make another left. At 21st Street turn right. Look for 1029 it will be on the right just before the cul-de-sac. PLEASE carpool over as there is extremely limited parking space. 5 YOU NEED TO KNOW: For the benefit of new members and older members who need a reminder, here are some things from the By- Laws you need to know: Fish Count: Any legal fish caught with approved tackle may be included in the tournament score. Scoring shall be determined by weight allocated to Pan Fish, Bass, Other (exotics) and Total Weight. Scoring shall be limited to a total of twenty fish of any species of club recognized game fish with a maximum of five bass included. Two-day tournaments shall be organized so that each day is counted as a tournament with awards for each day, unless designated as a pm/am tournament All legal freshwater panfish shall be 7 inches in length and a legal freshwater bass shall be 14 inches in length, unless the area to be fished has specific regulations in which the club as a whole will determine the regulations for that tournament pursuant to all state and federal regulations. Total length is measured from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail with the fish laid flat, mouth closed and tail lobe pressed together. Striped Bass, Peacock Bass and Sunshine Bass within legal size and bag limits shall be counted as bass for awards purposes but shall not be included in the largemouth bass bag limit (5). Shad, Pickerel, Catfish and exotics shall be treated as game fish for awards purposes, but not as panfish. Awards will be based on the member s eight (8) best tournaments in each category. A big fish caught in a Buddy Tournament is only eligible for award by the member who caught it. Non-members are not eligible for a big fish award. Penalties: Contestants who fail to appear at the official check-in site at the predetermined check-in time will be penalized 10 percent of total weight and an additional 10 percent of total weight for each minute late. In the event of an emergency resulting in late return to the check-in site, all members involved in the emergency shall be allowed to weigh their fish for the tournament and have same included for annual awards purposes, provided that a majority of the tournament participants determine that such an emergency existed. A member shall be penalized 10 percent of his total legal catch for each undersized fish brought to the Weigh Master. The above rules are contained in the By-Laws. If you do not have a copy and would like one, contact Betty Brown at lizbrown@cfl.rr.com. Club practice over the years has determined the following clarifications: 1. Check-in site can be scales, immediate grounds, dock, shoreline or ramp at weigh-in area. However, for the courtesy of the weigh master, you are requested to bring your fish to the scales as quickly as possible and save boat pulling and cleaning for after weigh-in if said activities will make you late. Being in the river or lake several minutes from the check-in site will count as being late. 2. An emergency is a motor quitting, towing another boater whose motor has quit, being a Good Samaritan in a medical emergency, saving someone who has fallen overboard, etc. Being late because of going through lochs does not count as an acceptance for a late return--you must plan accordingly. 6 other than the check-in site and then driving to the check-in site is not an acceptable excuse for being late.] 3. When a tournament spans several Counties, the member shall abide by the laws of the State of Florida, the County in which the fish is caught and the County in which the fish is weighed. Example: A 15 bass legally caught in Dade County cannot be weighed in Glades County because that is not a legal catch in Glades County.
