1 February 15, 2019 MANASQUAN FISHING CLUB NEWSLETTER Hello again. We re another month closer to Spring, which officially starts on March 20 th, hooray! It s time to get to a few fishing flea markets, tis the season, and get your gear and tackle ready. You don t want to waste good fishing time doing that once the warmer weather is here. Dues: Annual club dues for 2019 are $75, payable by March 31. If you have not paid already, please pay as soon as possible by either mailing your check to, P.O. Box 513, Manasquan, NJ or by paying in person at the March 1st meeting. Recap of February 1st Meeting: Jeff Dement of the American Littoral Society was kind enough to speak to us on the studies and activities conducted by the America Littoral Society. Topics included the impact of climate change, recent major storms, and pollutants on our fisheries and birdlife, the restoration of coastal and shoreline habitats including Wreck Pond, and the impact to fish migration as tracked by fish tagging. Jeff did a terrific job and it was all very interesting and a testament to the great work conducted by the Society to preserve our coastal habitats and wildlife. Many thanks to Jeff. Club business discussed included: New member Maura Hines was admitted to the Club and as a reminder, new member Robert Gavin was admitted to the Club at the January meeting. Welcome Maura and Rob! Planned fishing trip dates of April 13 th, May 22 nd, June 19 th, and December 7 th were announced, see below for details Budget was proposed, Opening Balance $3,149.51, Projected Income (principally from Dues and Awards Dinner Receipts & Auction) $8,875.00, Projected Expenses (principally Rent, Food, & Awards Dinner Expenses) $7,805.00, leaving a Projected Closing Balance $4,

2 New MFC hats as well as tee, polo, and sweat-shirts available for purchase were displayed. Other than hats, once the inventory is gone, that s it, so if you want something please contact Jack Pongracz. Monthly Meeting Scheduled Speakers (thus far): We have lined up an exciting group of speakers for upcoming meetings. Their talks promise to be interesting and educational, sure to make us better fishermen. Please plan to attend. Bill s Landing Tackle Shop), topic: TBD June 7 Tony Dubeck (Penn Tackle), topic: fishing tackle Planned Events - Mark Your Calendar: The club is planning a host of fun events for the upcoming year, as outlined below, for all to participate. Please mark your calendar so you don t miss any. Details have been added to events as they materialize, so be sure to note. March 2 (Saturday) Sinker Party (make your own sinkers & jigs): The sinker party, coordinated by our own Jack Miktus and Duane Danish, will be at Dome Sheet Metal, th Ave, Belmar, NJ, starting at 9:00 AM and ending whenever everybody is finished, usually about 1:00 PM. The club has molds for almost any sinkers and hooks, and molds for most jigs from 1/4 oz to 10 oz. Your only cost will be for the hooks you choose to use, the lead is free. Considering the cost of sinkers these days, this is a real money saver. You will be working inside an industrial building so weather is a not a concern, but you will need warm clothing, a good pair of gloves without any plastic parts to melt, a pair of pliers to remove the hot sinkers from the molds, a pail or container i.e. coffee can (not plastic) to carry home your well-earned lead, and a great attitude. Coffee, donuts, bagels and cream cheese and butter will be served. Please see Jack Miktus when you arrive to get you started. Thanks Jack and Duane! April 5 (Friday) 2019 Annual Awards Dinner & Auction: This event of the year will once again be held at The Spring Lake Manor, 415 Route 71, Spring Lake, NJ, from 6:00 PM 10:00 PM. Admission is $45/person. This is a terrific venue hosting our banquet, all included are hors d'oeuvre, a delicious 3 course dinner, and a glass of wine or a beer (after which you can

3 purchase adult beverages at the cash bar). If the great dinner alone isn t worth the price of admission, the comradery with club members is a ton of fun, you will help recognize all our award winners, and you ll have a chance to win some really terrific prizes in the Silent Auction. What could make for a better night? Please sign up early by either mailing your information and check to, or paying in person at our March 1 st meeting so we can get give The Spring Lake Manor a good headcount. April 13 (Saturday) - Blackfish fishing trip: aboard the Mary M IV, 6 th & Bayview Avenue, Barnegat Light, NJ on Saturday, April 13, 6:30 AM 2:30 PMish. Fare is $95 including tip. Limit is 15 participants. The last trip was fantastic fishing so book early. May 4 (Saturday) Manasquan P.B.A. Children s Fishing Tournament: This event is hosted by the Manasquan Police Benevolent Association and MFC members assist with the event. It is open to kids from 3-13 years old and typically over 100 compete. Registration starts at 8:00 AM and the event wraps up about Noon after lunch and the presentation of awards. Please let us know if you can help us help them by volunteering some of your time. May 22 (Wednesday) Sea Bass or Striped Bass fishing trip: aboard the Queen Mary, 415 Broadway, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742, Magic Hour Trip, 3:00 PM dark. More details to follow. June 11 (Tuesday) River Fluke Tournament: This year s River Fluke Tournament will be from 12:00 Noon to 5:00 PM, rain or shine. Fishing will be restricted to the Manasquan River, from boat or from shore. Weigh-in and picnic will be at the Manasquan Women s Club at 6:00 PM. Entry fee is $25/person which includes the fishing fee and picnic. For anyone who just wants to attend the picnic, the fee is $15. The tournament is open to all club members, their families and one non-family guest. Please see the attached 2019 MFC River Fluke Fishing Tournament Rules for more details. August 10 (Saturday) Big Sea Day Inlet Fishing Contest: September 6 (Friday) Fish Fry at monthly meeting: September (date TBD) Fluke fishing trip: aboard the Mary M IV, 6 th & Bayview Avenue, Barnegat Light, NJ. 4 December 7 (Saturday) - Blackfish fishing trip: aboard the Mary M IV, 6 th & Bayview Avenue, Barnegat Light, 6:30 AM 2:30 PMish. Fare is $95 including tip. Limit is 15 participants. Annual Fishing Contest: All MFC members are welcome to participate in the Club s annual fishing contest which runs for the entire calendar year. Winners in each of the two divisions, Senior Members and Junior Members, will receive recognition and awards presented at the Annual Awards Dinner. The contest is for the largest fish caught (as determined by weight) from a NJ shore (land-based fishing), or boat departing from a NJ port, in the following categories: Fluke, Striped Bass, Weakfish, Bluefish, Sea Bass, Blackfish, and Winter Flounder. There are also First Fish of the Year awards for the first Bluefish, Striped Bass, Fluke and Weakfish weighed-in, Catch & Release awards, and other special awards including the Fred Waltzinger Memorial Award for the largest Fluke overall. An official MFC Members Fishing Contest Rules, as recently revised by the Awards Chairperson, Frank Richetti, is attached. To enter, simply submit a completed Weigh-in Affidavit, copies also attached, or a tackle shop Weigh Slip for each entry to Frank either at or before the next regular MFC meeting following the date of the catch. Standings will be posted in the monthly Newsletter. Thanks Frank! 2019 Weigh-ins: None yet, too cold. DATE FISH SPECIES WEIGHT ANGLER DIVISION LOCATION GroupMe: 24 club members are participating in a GroupMe account. It is a free app that enables members to send free text messages to the group or free direct text messages to individual group members. It is a closed group so outsiders cannot see the messages. We are using it to give live fishing reports to the group and spread other relevant

5 fishing news, so join up and don t miss the boat, or the blitz! If you are not yet a member, please let me (CadalzoL@gmail.com) know if you would like to join and I will you an invitation with directions. Again, it s free. Web Site: The website ( continues to be updated and improved. Please visit and let us know what you think, suggestions are always welcome. Fishing Reports: The fishing is, in a word, slow. Party boats that are fishing are targeting the offshore wrecks are picking at some blackfish, porgies, ling and cod. Think Spring! Next Meeting: Our next meeting will be Friday, March 1, 2019, 7:30 PM, at the Manasquan Women s Club, 62 Main St, Manasquan, NJ. Our speaker will be Dr. Doug Zemeckis who will discuss the migration of black sea bass. Please make every effort to attend, the talk should be very interesting and we will also be discussing upcoming events as well as topics that effect the future of the Club for which your participation and input is welcome and appreciated.
