That s what SWABC is all about The Best Fishing Club in NJ The regular meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of the month, at 8:00P.M. The only meeting that is not held at the Legion Hall on Tuesday will be the night of the Past President Dinner. That month is March. A $5 fee is required, for non-members, this entitles them to the 50/50 drawing, refreshments, snacks, and some new tricks about fishing. Welcome all; we hope you enjoy the evening.

President s Corner I think we all had a very good time at our annual Past President s dinner with 105 attendees. The food was good and we had a lot of nice prizes for our Dark Horse. Captains Frank Tenore (Fins on Feathers) and Phil Bouchard (Misty Morn) gave us free charter trips and Captain Phil also gave us two $50 gift certificates for Meltzers. We did not receive Captain s Phil s prizes early enough to raffle them off at our dinner, but they will be raffled at our club s meetings along with other Dark Horse prizes. Captain John Kolias (Reel Fun) gave us two of his hoodies that are great to use for fishing. Thank you Captains! Chuck Santoro brought a basket of fishing gear and Harry Vogt donated a nice rod and reel combo. I donated the Guy Harvey picture and the quilt with lighthouse pictures on it. John DeBona Advertising Manager of the Fisherman magazine won our 50/50 prize and he even donated $100 back of his winnings to our club! Thanks John! Member Joseph Asfour donated $20 to our club toward our Youth Outreach program. Thanks Guys! Not many clubs host a dinner event like ours and I am proud of it and this dinner could not have happened without the support of Captain Art Lein (Katie James) who did a great job in shopping for a large variety of Dark Horse prizes and setting them up at our dinner. Harold Gusterson did his usual fine job in handling all of the ticket sales and reservations. Matt Christensen helped Harold at the door with handling the tickets, Dan Eberle sold raffle tickets and gave us an invocation to thank God for the food we were about to eat. Jim Galanaugh sold the Dark Horse tickets with Harry Vogt at his side selling the 50/50 tickets. Rich Bunger printed the signing for our ticket sales and put up our club banner at the dais along with the help of Tom Tyls. As you can see, this was not a one man show and I want to thank them and all of you who showed up at our dinner to celebrate this event and have a good time while doing it! Member Frank Rella works for the Williams Company and his firm donated $2,000 to our club to support its activities, especially toward our Youth Outreach program. We are so grateful to this company for their continued support and for Frank taking the initiative to reach out to the Williams company for it! Also, member Ed O Dowd (Past Commander) from the American Legion Post # 170 gave me a check for $500 to support our club and we, of course, are grateful for this donation! We have been holding our club meetings at this Post # 170 for 42 years and a number of us (including myself) are also members of this Legion. Somerset Show our club had a booth at the March th Somerset show and I want to also thank our members for selling our raffle tickets at it and they include: Rich Bunger, Tom Tyls, Bob Cameron, Barry Paull,Chuck, Santoro, John Piazza, Harold Gusterson, Harry Vogt, Dan Eberle, Fred Villanova, Bill Fish, Jim Galanaugh, Don Lohse, Jim Piobino, Mike Peluso and Dave Nicholson. A Thank You to all who worked at this show and to John Piazza who worked at it on Friday as well as Sunday! We sold a record amount of raffle tickets at the show because of the support of these members who worked at it. Speaker for April 15 th Meeting Captain Brian Rice Captain Rice will give us a presentation on the latest line of Shimano products. Many of us have Shimano rods and reels and this meeting will be very informative for all of us, even if we don t own Shimano tackle. Shimano makes quality products and Brian will tell us all about what Shimano has to offer. He will also tell us about the right rods/reels to use for the fishing we intend to do. Note that we have two Shimano rods in our club raffle! This will be a very informative meeting; don t miss it! Take a Rod make a Donation One of our members (Bob Kreger) passed away and his son donated Bob s fishing rods to our club. A number of these rods are old and may be of value to those of us who would like to have them for various types of fishing. Instead of trying to selling them outright, we will just put them out for review and if you want any of them, just make a donation for the rod or rods you take and that donation will go toward our club s operating expenses. Speaker for our May 20 th Meeting Craig Lemon This speaker was scheduled for our January 21 st meeting that had to be canceled because of a bad snowstorm. Craig said that he wants to come to our May meeting to tell us about the stocking program of our state s fish hatchery and the types of fish that are available for us. Also, a fungus called Furunculosis has attacked the trout in our Pequest Hatchery resulting in thousands of these fish being killed to prevent these fish from spreading this disease in our states waters. Just recently, 100,000 of these fish were killed because of it. So, Craig will certainly have a lot to talk about on this issue! However, New Jersey has some great fresh water fishing and a number of our members enjoy it. Whether you fish or freshwater fish or not, you will certainly find Craig s presentation interesting Boat and Trailer for Sale Aqua sport 245 Explorer HP Johnson outboard, equipped with Bennet trim tabs, 2 depth sounders, stainless steel trolling pole holders, anchor retriever, bait well fill and drain, fish box in cockpit with drain pump, extra anchor, curtains with clear plastic and zippered openings, two marine batteries, Load rite 48 roller, two axel trailer with spare tire. Please pick them at our dinner or at our regular club meetings while the supply of them lasts. They are a beautiful production made by Tom Tyls and Rich Bunger

This winter does not want to end even though spring is already her! However, many of us are itching to go on the water and we have these fishing opportunities on the horizon. These are the scheduled trips so far and others are in the planning stages. As trips develop before the next printing of this newsletter, they will be announced at our meetings: April 16 th (Wednesday) Blackfish Trip on the MIMI VI Tom Siciliano trip captain Tom is a member of our club and he is also a past president. The October date has been changed because the fishing in October has not quite measured up to expectations and the new May 18 th date can better result in anglers landing some big blues or stripers and generate more excitement in this tournament. Early registration fee is $15 for anglers 18 and up received by April 21 st. It is $20 the day of the tournament. The fee is $5 for anglers between 13 and 17 and free for kids 12 and under. Contact Frank or Mary Tenore at (973) or to Finsonfeathers@msn.com John Toth will be setting up charters on the Fins on Feathers (732) SWABC Fluke Tournament Our club is running its 3 rd Annual Fluke Tournament scheduled for August 9 th. We have three (3) ports for participating boats to weigh in their fish at Twin Lights Marina in the Highlands, Fisherman s Den in Belmar and Clark s landing in Point Pleasant. We are trying to make this tournament a big success by getting at least 100 boats and more to enter it. Last year, in spite of Sandy we had 37 boats enter it and we paid out $4,640 that also included Calcutta monies! At the three shows our club have participated in (Raritan, Boat and Somerset) we signed up 60 anglers who requested to be reminded to enter the tournament as it comes closer to the August 9 th date and we passed out approximately over 500 applications for it! We have already received a signed application form in March with a check for $85 to enter our August 9 th tournament! We are requesting all members to take these application forms to your friends or people whom you know that may be interested in being in our tournament and give them our application that provides all the information they need to enter it. These applications can be picked up at our meetings. As our tournament draws nearer, we will be distributing these applications at various tackle shops in our area and advertising the tournament in the Fisherman and other media outlets. Our Tournament Director, Mark Capalbo, has done an outstanding job in pulling this tournament off the ground and he can be contacted at (201) or at markcapalbo@aol.com if you need any information about it. Our main goal with this tournament is to make enough money that we can set aside to subsidize future charter fishing trips so that these trips can be set at a reduced cost and be enjoyed by many more of us. Fishing is what this club is about and enjoying it with all of our members! We are looking for Volunteers to be Trip Captains to plan & schedule Charter & Party boat trips for 2014.

Surf Fishing Trips & Dates While the above are boat trips, we do have a contingent of members who like to fish at the surf and our club does not have organized surf trips at this time for our members. However, member Tom Tyls likes his surf fishing and he wants members to contact him to possibly set up some dates when they all can get together and fish as a group and have some fun together. Tom can be reached at (201) or tatyls@aol.com Charter Fishing Trip with the Hudson River Fishermen s Association (HRFA) A number of our club members belong to the HRFA and likewise, members of the HRFA belong to our club. We have been invited to go on one of their trips and they are certainly welcome to go on any of our charter trips. The HRFA has been running a charter fishing trip for 29 years to Ogunquit, Maine on the boat Bunny Clark for cod, haddock, Pollock, cusk, and wolfish. Members van/carpool and leave on Friday, May 16 th, fish Saturday, May 17 th and return home on Sunday, May 18 th. The cost is $85 for an 8 hour trip on the boat and $80 to stay overnight at a hotel (for two people). For information about the Bunny Clark, visit To receive details of this trip, call Arnie Ulrich at (201) or him at kavester@aol.com. Fishing Management Issues Updates By John Toth We have been hearing so much about summer flounder regulations and as at the writing of this newsletter, this issue has not been completely settled, but I will tell you what I know for sure right now. Fluke- With the pressure from New York s Chuck Schumer and John Bullard from the National Marine Fisheries Services who spoke in favor of New York (when he should have not been allowed to do so on an issue regarding the allocation of fish among states since he is a federal official) New Jersey is officially in a regional fishing system with the combined states of New York and Connecticut. This means that all three states will have the same size and bag limits for fluke, but individual states can still determine when their fishing seasons starts and ends. For 2014, we will be allowed to keep 5 fluke per trip with a minimum size of 18 inches. The only issue that needs to be decided is when the season for it will start and end. The season will be for 128 days, starting not before May 17 th and ending no later than September 30 th. At the April 4 th meeting of the NJ Marine Fisheries Council meeting that will be held in Manahawakin, a vote will be taken by this Council on the season issue. Quite possibly, the fluke season will be extended into late September since our waters will be cold because of the unusually cold winter and the sea bass season may be closed leaving us with not much to fish for. Sea Bass the season for it will begin on May 19 th with a 12 ½ inch size limit. It is not certain when the season for this fishery will be closed or open during the year at the time this newsletter is written Membership Dues are Due Club membership dues are now payable and the dues are $30 for an individual joining the first time and $25 for each year thereafter, and $30 for a family membership. April is the deadline for members to pay their dues and receive our club s newsletter and be listed as an active club member. We want members to show their 2014 dues cards starting at our May meeting. Please see Membership Chairman, Matt Christensen at our meetings to pay your dues or mail it to the American Legion Post # 170, 33 West Passaic Street, Rochelle Park, NJ Make the check payable to the Saltwater Anglers of Bergen County Death of Richard Cabela Founder of Cabela s Store Richard Cabela died on February 17 th at 77 and founded Cabela s store with his wife and brother in His family was in the furniture business and on a lark he bought $45 worth of hand-tied fishing flies while on a business trip to Chicago for furniture. When the fishing flies did not sell in his furniture store, he put an ad in a local paper offering 12 fishing flies for $1. He made only one sale. So he tried Sports Afield magazine with this ad Free introductory offer 5 popular Grade A hand-tied flies. Send 25 cents for postage and handling. This ad led to his catalog business and the Cabela s stores we know today. (NY Times Feb.22 SWABC Fund Raising Raffle Tickets are now on sale for our fund raising raffle that helps to support the many activities of our club and to essentially help pay our club bills related to hall rental, food and beverages for our meetings, printing and mailing of our newsletters and other related expenses. Please see member Fred Villanova at our meetings and take at least two raffle books or more to sell or buy! The proceeds from our raffle sales also helps to keep our club dues at a low cost of $25 that has not changed for many years, despite increasing inflation. Each book has 10 raffle tickets in it and at a cost of $1 for each ticket. We have some very nice prizes to offer and they are: 1. Charter Fishing Trip on the Reel Fun Sport Fishing - $ 500 value 2. Canyon Reel HS 16 and Shimano Terez Rod - $400 value inch LCD High Definition TV - $300 value 4. Canyon Reel HS 15 and Shimano Talavera Rod - $280 value 5. Fishing Trip 2 tickets for the Party Boat Fisherman $150 value 6. Gift Certificate Dick s Sporting Goods - $50 7. Gift Certificate Dick s Sporting Goods - $50 Drawing of the winning raffle tickets will be held at our club s June 17, 2014 meeting & the tickets will be pulled at 9:00 p.m. We want to thank Captain John Kolias for donating a charter to our club on his Reel Fun and also to Don Par for donating the two Canyon reels for our raffle

2013 winners Chris Zeman Barry Paull Harry Vogt Bob Cameron Matt Christensen 2014 Big Fish Contest Rules: To limit confusion about the rules governing our Big Fish Contest, our Board members discussed this issue and agreed to the following provisions that would take into effect for 2014 and in the future: 1. Fish have to be in season to be entered. 2. The fish can be caught anywhere, not in just New Jersey s waters. 3. The fish entered has to be verified by the boat captain or another club member or at an official weigh station. A picture of the fish is a much-preferred way to verify an entry into the Big Fish contest done by a cell phone or a regular camera. 4. A club member can win more than one Big Fish contest prize. 5. Dues card number must be on the submitted application (Dues number can be obtained from our Membership Secretary) 6. Affidavits must be received within 30 days after the fish is caught. Entries for fish caught after 12/15 of a given year must be received by Janaury15th of the following year. Any member submitting a false affidavit will be disqualified from entering the contest during the year. If disqualified twice, the member will be expelled from the club.
