That s what SWABC is all about The Best Fishing Club in NJ The regular meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of the month, at 8:00P.M. The only meeting that is not held at the Legion Hall on Tuesday will be the night of the Past President Dinner. That month is March. A $5 fee is required, for non-members, this entitles them to the 50/50 drawing, refreshments, snacks, and some new tricks about fishing. Welcome all; we hope you enjoy the evening.

2 President's Corner On February 11 th, our club held a Flea market at the VFW Hall in Hasbrouck Heights. It was a SUCCESS with 45 tables sold for vendors to display their wares plus there was waiting list for more tables, but we were at capacity. Our records show that we had approximately 450 people show up at our flea market, even during a heavy rain that lasted all day. However to me, the success of this flea market was seeing our membership volunteering to help Craig Zincavage, make it a grand event. I am involved with a number of major organizations and other fishing clubs and I often see, unfortunately, apathy. Members not helping to get things done for their respective organizations. Our club is NOT one of them! Craig asked for volunteers to help him with this flea market and the following individuals pitched in to assist him in these capacities: making soups/hot dogs& snacks John Waters, Judy Schaible, Don Lohse, Dave Nicholson, Ken Wheeler - selling raffle tickets & 50/50 Mike Cargill, Rick Swarthe, Steve Totten, - selling & renewing club memberships Harold Gusterson, Dominic Catalano, Jack O Hara (4 new members joined!) collecting $5 entrance fee- Jim Galanaugh Jr., Chuck Santoro, Fred Villanova, and Bill, Lessimore. Reinaldo Muniz, (Rey) helped where it was most needed. Finally, I want to THANK Craig Zincavage and his wife Amy for their energy, time and commitment in making this flea market a success for our club! Note from Craig: I want to personally THANK all of you for helping me with this flea market! I could not have done it without your help! Sponsorship ($1,500) from Williams for our June 4 th Charter Fishing Trip for a Day on the Water for Disadvantaged Youths! Williams generously donated this sum of money that will help to offset the costs of our club for running this annual fishing trip. Our club member, Frank Rella, works for Williams and asked Williams for sponsoring this worthwhile effort. Thanks Frank and Thank Williams for your continuing generosity for helping youths enjoy a Day on the Water (For you new club members, our club has been taking youths (from only disadvantaged backgrounds) on an annual charter fishing trip for many years. We think that this club tradition started shortly after the WW II. February Meeting Recap Our speaker was Doug Zemekis, Professor at Rutgers, who talked about sea bass, their migration patterns and how we could save them by puncturing their bladder area and reeling them fast into the boat instead of a slow motion. Many sea bass will be saved by us due to Doug s presentation. Past President's Dinner - March 20, 2018 Mountainside Inn - Last Call We had a very good time at this dinner in March of last year with a nice crowd and food served Family Style with roast beef, chicken, salad, pasta, potatoes and dessert. We will have speakers to touch briefly on a variety of fishing-related topics, a huge Dark Horse, door prizes, and certificates/gift cards to be presented to the winners of the Big Fish contest! Tickets are now on sale for this dinner at $30. It is not too late to order your tickets. For more information about this dinner or to order them for you and your friends, please call Harold Gusterson, our Dinner Chairman, at (201) Welcome Aboard! Our club usually does well at this show with the selling of raffle tickets and meeting anglers who may join our club. Volunteers to staff the show included: Steve Totten, John Piazza, Art Lein, Mike Cargill, Tom Bornemann, Aram Setian, Craig Zincavage, Art Vrola and John Toth. Special THANKS to Steve Totten and John Piazza for setting up our booth and working three shifts at this show! A Beefsteak Dinner Something New November 10 th Our club is going to have an all you can eat catered beefsteak dinner on November 10 th at our regular meeting location American Legion Post # 170. The caterer (Nightingale from Clifton) did a similar beefsteak dinner at a JCAA function and the steak was delicious, tender and kept on coming. This is NOT a club meeting where we read minutes, do business and have a speaker etc., but it is just a fun night and one to enjoy the company of our members and our wives. The details on this dinner have not been completely worked out yet, but just mark your calendar for the November 10 th date. Club Cook Book Lou Castellano loves to cook and he has volunteered to compile seafood recipes sent to him from our members to make a club cook book. Lou wants your favorite recipes that you have prepared and are the type you would serve to your visiting guests. As in most recipe formats, you would first list all of the ingredients that go into the recipe. Then you next detail the necessary steps to make your dish like over temperature, marinating time etc. See Lou at our meetings to discuss/show your recipes and you can also contact him at (201) or at: hooknarrows@optimum.net Eels Are Big Money! Live- baby American Eels. called Elvers, is a commodity that can fetch more than $2,000 a pound at the dock, and the big demand and big prices have spawned a black market that wildlife officials say is jeopardizing the life of this species. These eels are a big delicacy, especially in the Asian market. Law enforcement authorities are cracking down on the unlicensed eel fishermen and illicit sales along the East Coast. Operation Broken Glass, a reference to the eels' glassy skin, has resulted in 15 guilty pleas for illegal trafficking of about 4 million dollars worth of Elvers. (NY Post, August 8, 2017). Revenge of the Fish A man almost died when a fish he had caught jumped down his throat. EMT s found a man, 28, in cardiac arrest in Biscombe England, on October 5 th. He had put a 6-inch Dover sole over his mouth as a joke, but it jumped down and blocked his airway. Paramedics said, but he suffered no lasting effects NY Post, October 13, 2017.

New Club Membership Policy & Purchase of Club s Raffle Tickets Our club membership dues are $35 for an individual and $40 for family membership. The dues for a new member joining our club is $40 for the first year and $35 each year thereafter. Members, current and new, will be required as club policy when renewing their 2018 membership to buy two of our club raffle books for a total cost of $20. (Each book has ten tickets in it at a cost of $1 for each ticket). Members selling these raffle tickets can either keep them for their own use to possibly win one of the raffle prizes, or sell the tickets and keep the $20 from selling their two raffle books. This policy was instituted by our club s Board members so that our club can have an ongoing revenue stream to cover the club s expenses relating to insurance fees, hall rentals, speaker fees, postage, refreshments for our meetings and other expenses. All club members must have their dues paid by April 2018 or they will be removed from our club membership roster. Tickets are now on sale for our fund raising raffle that helps to support the many activities of our club. Please see member Fred Villanova at our meetings and take your two raffle books or more to sell or buy! The drawing of raffle tickets will be held on May 15 th at our regularly scheduled club meeting at the American Legion Post # 170. Sign Up for New Jersey s Registry It is important to sign up for New Jersey s registry program since it is not only a requirement, but it also shows how many anglers fish in New Jersey that do saltwater fishing. This information is used by our Fish & Wildlife for surveys they are required to complete by federal officials, but these numbers also come into play when federal monies/grants are available for states to apply for. For example, If only 100,000 anglers are registered in New Jersey and 300,000 are registered in Connecticut, then Connecticut stands a better chance to receive this type of financial aid. To register in New Jersey, go to You can also give information on the number and types of fish that you catch to our Fish & Wildlife by going to This information is used by our Fish & Wildlife to respond to the 20 some fishing plans requested by our federal government for the various types of fish that we harvest Did you know 8.8 Million tons of plastic end up in the world's oceans each year. (Asbury Park Press - 8/16/17) Whales are Right-Handed This is no fish tale- blue whales are right-handed. The massive mammals favor their right side when lunging for food, a new study claims. The whales, which can grow as long as three school buses, catch more crustaceans when using the right side of their body according to the report published in Current Biology. (Weird but True, New York Post November 22, 2017).

4 Fishing Management Issues - By John Toth In our club s October 2017 Bulletin, I wrote an article Proposal to Sell Striped Bass in New Jersey. In this article, I summarized a September 5 th meeting that was held with Jersey Coast Angler Association (JCAA) staff (including myself) and with representatives from Pacifico Aquaculture, a company that specializes in farm-raised striped bass. This company wants to sell their striped bass in New Jersey that is grown from six to seven pure brood stocks, not hybrid, and sold at about 28 inches in size that takes up to months to mature. In February of this year, the JCAA received a letter from Pacifico proposing that they should be allowed to sell striped bass in New Jersey and Pacifico wanted a JCAA response to their proposal. The JCAA was in the forefront of making striped bass a no-sale Game Fish and Pacifico knows that the JCAA needs to be brought on board for their enterprise to easily move forward. As president of the JCAA I placed this issue on the JCAA agenda of our January 30 th General Membership meeting for their consideration and vote. After considerable discussion and weighing the pros and cons of this proposal, our membership voted to NO to this company s proposal to sell their striped bass in New Jersey. The letter (on JCAA letterhead) that explains our position on this matter to Pacifico follows. (I wrote this letter for the current JCAA president (Mark Taylor) to sign). Mr. Mike Aldonas, 2/14/2018 The following is the Jersey Coast Angler s Association (JCAA) response to your request for your proposal to sell farm-raised striped bass in New Jersey. The JCAA is an association of fishing clubs and at our club membership meeting held on January 30, 2018, your proposal to the selling of striped bass in NJ was on our agenda for discussion. You are correct in that there are a number of benefits to the selling of your striped bass and they are: making striped bass more available in stores, restaurants and these fish are very healthy for human consumption. We recognize these benefits and others that you indicate in your proposal to us. However, our big concern is that illegally caught striped bass would be sold as farm-raised under your Pacifico brand. As pointed out to you at our September 6 th meeting, the tags that you place in your fish to brand them as Pacifico property can find their way to anglers who will catch local stripers and then pass them off as a Pacifico striped bass. What is to prevent a fish purveyor from selling/giving these tags to local anglers and then selling the striped bass they catch as a Pacifico product? This is a major issue that we brought to your attention at our September 6 th meeting and it still remains unresolved. Even if the tags are supposed to be punched at the time of sale, who would monitor this? The economic benefits to pass off locally caught striped bass as belonging to Pacifico can be very tempting for the fishing industries that would sell your striped bass, and the local anglers who could generate hefty income from catching them. The benefits and the drawbacks to your selling farm-raised striped bass in New Jersey was discussed and voted on by JCAA member clubs at our September 30 th meeting. After considerable discussion, the JCAA clubs voted against your proposal to sell Pacifico striped bass in New Jersey. Through the 1970 s, our striped bass population was decimated and the JCAA along with other organizations succeeded with our legislators in making striped bass a no-sale Game Fish. While we all agreed that you run a very legitimate business, our members are very passionate about striper fishing. We proceed with caution to ensure the safety and viability of this popular fishery. Sincerely, Mark Taylor, President Report on Costa Rica Trip by John Toth Club members Rich Melton, Tom Bornemann, Bobby Jones, Chuck Routar and I were on this trip. We left Newark Airport on February 22 nd and returned on February 27 th. We stayed at a gorgeous resort called Los Suenos on the Pacific side in Costa Rica. This place is stunning with palm trees, flowers and all types of fauna. This is a huge resort and we had a golf cart at our disposal to get around this complex. We used it to get the supplies we needed for the hotel and to reach the boats. We had two chartered fishing trips one offshore and one inshore. The offshore was for the larger fish marlin, sailfish. The inshore trip was for rooster fish and smaller species. For the offshore, we caught a lot of yellow fin tuna and I caught a 35 lb. mahi mahi (that was estimated by the mate). For the inshore, Tom Bornemann caught a rooster fish, and that is a very beautiful fish that while beautiful, it is not edible and went back into the water. After the day of the offshore trip, we took some of our catch to a local restaurant recommended by the mate and we had mahi mahi and tuna done up several ways: fried, blackened, and grilled. It was a feast! While we did catch fish, the fishing was off and it also affected the boats that were also near us. As we all say, that is fishing! On our way to the Los Suenos, our taxi stopped at a bridge. Underneath it in the water was many and huge crocodiles waiting for food that is thrown at them by people up on the bridge. These crocodiles looked big to me (10 to 12 feet and I did not want to go down to measure them), but the taxi driver told me that these were the small ones and up the river were the Big ones Grande! We had time to take a river cruise and we saw all types of birds, lizards and monkeys that even jumped in our boat and enjoyed standing on top of our heads! Our river guide told us that his name was Crazy Andy and he had pieces of bananas to lure the monkeys to us and yelled out monkey type language to the monkeys to announce that we were coming to them. While he somewhat lived up to his Crazy Andy image, he turned out to be very informative of our surroundings and also a fun guide to be with. We all had fun on our fishing trips, going to restaurants and just talking with each other about fishing and personal experiences. I was very privileged to be in the enjoyable company of Bobby Jones, Rich Melton, Tom Bornemann and Chuck Routar. We took a lot of pictures and we hope to put them together and give a presentation of our Cosata Rica trip for you all to see. It was Great Trip! March 16-18th - The Saltwater Fishing Expo (NJ Convention and Expo Center, Edison NJ - same place as the Boat Show) This is a show that is focused on saltwater fishing and it should not be missed since it has so much fishing tackle for sale. Our club has a booth at this show to promote our club and sell raffle tickets. This is the current schedule for the volunteers working at this show: March 16th Friday) - Noon to 4:00 p.m. - S.Totten, J. Toth, J. Piazza, Art Lein -- 4:00:pm. to 8:00 p.m. Bob Cameron, Art Lein March 17th (Saturday) -10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. - J. Piazza, S. Totten, Art Lein -- 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. D. Lohse, J. In 2014, regulators closed the Maine s shrimp fishery with the hope that this struggling fishery would replenish itself if left undisturbed. So far, according to scientists, it hasn t. Egg production is down. Survival rates of shrimp larvae are poor. Last month (November), regulators voted to keep this fishery closed through 2018, the fifth consecutive year without a shrimp harvest. What makes this unusual closing is that fishermen are not being blamed for this problem. The suspected problem is climate change! While swimmers may still gasp at the cold waters, the Gulf of Maine is warming and becoming increasing inhospitable to shrimp. Average winter sea-surface temperatures have increased 4.5 degrees in Booth Bay Harbor since Some shrimpers believe in climate change and others do not. But they all feel stymied that their cherished way of life is changing and not for the better. Many locals were raised on their Maine shrimp and claim that their shrimp are the only ones that have real taste. This shrimp industry is in limbo and the future of it is not that bright. (NY Times, December 27, 2017). Tons of Plastics Litter Coral Reefs in Asia Over the years, Dr. Lamb, a Cornell professor, and her collaborators, assembled a data base of plastic pollution on 159 reefs in Australia, Indonesia, Myanmar and Thailand. In a new research paper, they estimate that reefs across the Asia-Pacific region are littered with more than 11 billion pieces of plastic larger than 5 centimeters and include bottles, diapers, chairs and just about everything humans use. Corals with plastic on them were 20 times more likely to be diseased than those that were not polluted. (NY Times, January 30, 2018). Dolphins on Drugs! Dolphins flip for mind-altering drugs-especially in group settings, new research reveals. The marine mammals deliberately Get High on the nerve toxins of puffer fish by chewing them and passing them to pals, according to researchers who captured footage of the odd ritual. Zoologist Rob Piley said that the stoned fish began acting peculiarly.as if fascinated by their own reflection. Weird but True, New York Post, November 29, 2017.
