Bay Ave., Manahawkin. Doors open at 7:30 PM Parking is in back. Hi everyone, PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Remember those cold spring days when you were wishing for warmer weather? OK, you got it; how do you like it? With few exceptions, it s just too damn hot and humid to enjoy unless you re a dog with your head out of the car window the only comfortable drift is one too fast for the fish! Well, if you re like me, your boat is collecting slime waiting for the next nice day. The club Fluke Tournament was terrific! We had 20 anglers signed up with 5 keepers hitting the scale and Nick Rossi, the 11 year old grandson of Ed Valitutto, taking home the $ st prize. The 2 nd & 3 rd place prizes ($100.00) were split among the captain and crew of the Red Herring Bill Figley, Bill Kleimenhagen and myself. The highlight of the day was the BBQ hosted by Donna, our club secretary, and her husband Vic. The food was fantastic, the beer, the wine and whatever else drunk was refreshing and the tall tales were believable, even if untrue. Nancy Sibona s homemade cookies were simply the most delicious cookies eaten that day anywhere. Period! What an absolutely wonderful day was had by all and Vic and Donna have offered to host this event every year, so plan on participating next year. Oh, by the way, in addition to all the fun we had, the club will be sending $ to the Save our Summer Flounder Fishery Fund to help in their important research! Thanks to all who participated to make this happen. Vince has organized another VHFC dinner for members, wives and, or significant others starting at 6:00pm, September17th, The dinner will be held at Villiaggo s with a choice between four entrees. It is a BYOB affair and a great opportunity to socialize with your fellow club members. Always a lot of fun! Sign up at our next meeting, $36.00 per person.

2 Page 2 of 10 THE HARBOUR LIGHT MAY 2016 HELP! HELP! Your club needs your help. The club cannot exist on its own. It requires the input and personal help of its members. We need members to step up and lend a hand to keep the club an organization worth your membership. It simply isn t fair that a few members carry the responsibility of keeping the club working. In addition, it is not healthy for a club to have the same few people doing the same thing for long periods of time. For a club to stay healthy and relevant, it needs new people with new ideas. Vince Sibona, who has handled the Club Membership responsibility for over 13 years, will be stepping down from this position and needs a member to step up so that he can help train that person. John Lewis, A longtime resident of LBI and has a 100 ton Master license, running fishing charters out of Beach Haven. Capt John will discuss the ethics of fishing as relates to regulations, tournaments, charters, and the sport in general. Last months speaker was Joshua O Connor. Joshua O Connor of NOAA. Fluke species for the calendar year 2015 then you win the FOY trophy for that species. Note: your dues have to be paid before you catch an eligible fish..go to our website for more information. ( Regulatory & Legislative Report August, 2016 Mid-Atlantic Council Approves Amendment to Protect Unmanaged Forage Species The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council has approved an amendment to protect unmanaged forage species in the Mid-Atlantic. If approved by the Secretary of Commerce, the Unmanaged Forage Omnibus Amendment would prohibit the development of new and expansion of existing directed commercial fisheries on a number of unmanaged forage species in Mid-Atlantic Federal waters. The prohibition would continue until the Council has had an opportunity to assess the available scientific information for these species and consider the potential impacts to existing fisheries, fishing communities, and the marine ecosystem. Forage fish are small, low trophic level fish that play a central role in the marine food chain. These species facilitate the transfer of energy to higher trophic levels by consuming very small prey and then being eaten by larger, predatory fish and other marine animals. The rules are simple: you have to catch a fish of the above species, take it to one of our official weigh stations to have it weighed and recorded on our official weigh-in forms. OLD FISHING BOOKS WANTED Bill Dabney has accumulated some very good books & videos for our library but we will gladly accept any

If you have something, either bring it to a meeting or call Bill at to make arrangements for us to get your book or video. Take a look at the new additions to our library Boat US also have their publications on line. There you can find back issues. Go to : ault.asp But you will also need your Member number to access them years. Nor will you have the hazard of a fire on board. The Coast Guard has approved it to replace them. You will on have to have one board. But you will be required to have a new or Fresh set of batteries every year. ( 3 C batteries). And they do not have an expiration date. (Vessel Safety) Jeff Orsoe For those VHFC members who are also members of BOAT/US, you may have noticed something a little different when the monthly magazine arrived. First off it came in a plastic cover. When you opened it you should also have found a copy of Seaworthy. Seaworthy for those that do not know, it is the quarterly publication of the Boat/US insurance. 9not to be confused with the Tow Insurance. What Boat/US will be doing from here on it, is to combine both publications into a single magazine. This results in receiving Seaworthy six times a year and for those who are not covered by them will gain the information as provide in it. The second piece that I wish to share is the now approved permanent Flare.
