2 Eagle Lake - Too Cold!!! When temperatures reach a chill factor, I have to decide whether it s worth risking my health or fishing, most of the time my health concerns win. See I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. It and cold weather just don t go together. It s been in remission for a few years but every now and then it rears its head and lets me know it s still around. I commend all the 43 teams that fished Eagle. Y all did great just going out on the lake. On to the tournament, Jeremy Aldridge and Clint Egbert did an excellent job catching a huge stringer of crappie to not only win the tournament but win big fish too. Eagle proved again to be a great crappie lake. My hat s off to the MDWFP for continuously stocking the lake with fresh crappie. I hear they ve put nearly 100K of white and black crappie in Eagle this year. At the rate Eagle grows crappie we should be catching some of those in a couple years. I also hear they ve slacked off stocking stripers. Thank you MDWFP, now it s up to us crappie fishermen to follow the regulations and release those under 12 and to report those poachers. It still amazes me to see the number of kids at our tournaments. I think they re as addicted to crappie fishing as we adults are. Did I mention that Santa Claus came to Eagle Lake, sure did? The kids loved it as much as Santa did, some of them could not believe Santa was among us. Trae McWilliams (David and Samantha McWilliams son) was some kind of scared when he saw Santa. Santa tried to get Trae to come set in his lap but Trae was having none of that. I heard him say, Mama, that s the ugliest Santa I ve ever seen. Please don t let him come to our house. Mama, that ain t Santa, that s Cat Walker. That was classic, Trae finally warmed up to Santa and let me get some pictures. Santa didn t come empty handed, he made sure all the kids got t-shirts and boy did they love that. We even had a few big kids, some as old as Santa sit in his lap and take pictures. That s what MCC is all about, Family, Fishing, and Fun. Next up is Okatibbee, it should be lots of fun, it s one of the few COE lakes that s completely loaded with fish. It s not known as a big fish lake but a lot of fish lake. It s one of the few lakes where a drop of water can make the difference between first and second place. 3 From The Presidents Desk - Roger Womack Eagle Lake Eagle lake what a tournament. Teams had to adjust to a east wind mid 20 degree temperatures and a blue bird Sky to start the morning. But as expected a few teams figured out the right pattern. Hats off my Friends to Clint Egbert & Jeremy Aldridge, they laid the wood to some huge crappie. All I can say is, guys whatever you re doing, keep doing it because it s working to perfection. I would like to give a special thanks to Santa Clauses for stopping by the weigh in and spending a little time with the kids. That was classic. I think Santa had as much fun as the kids did. This one is in books and we are headed to Okatibbee Lake in January. Everyone will like going to Okatibbee it s loaded with crappie and they have rooms & cabins on the lake. Katie and I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy Year. Let s get 2017 off to a great start at Okatibbee by catching some crappie and having a good time. Roger The Weigh-Master - Terry Stewart Eagle Lake There may not have been a lot of fish caught at Eagle Lake overall, but man the fish sure were healthy! And speaking of healthy weights congratulations Jeremy Aldridge and Clint Egbert on another win! These guys are good on any lake and even in tough conditions they can get it done! A big thanks to Bernard Williams for all he does for MCC. Even though he didn t fish due to motor repairs he still showed up to make sure the weigh in ran smooth and take pictures. And this isn t the first time he has done this. Thanks again Bernard for your service to MCC! Only a couple more tournaments until spring. 4 Well, it was another tough tournament at Eagle and Chotard. Pre-fishing was a cold, windy, rainy and miserable week of fish just not biting. At least Saturday was a beautiful day with no rain and bearable wind. But man was it cold!!! Most of us struggled to find fish willing to bite. But like always a couple of teams were still able to catch a limit of BIG crappie. And just like last year, Paula and I had to watch as Jeremy and Clint loaded the boat with fish right in front of us. I don t know how they do it. Boats all around them not getting a bite and these guys look like they are putting on a show fishing out of the Bass Pro Shops fish tank! Congratulations guys. You put a whooping on us once again. Next, up we are headed to Okatibbee Lake. Everyone has really enjoyed this tournament the past couple of seasons. We will have the water park all to ourselves this time of year. And the gang can all come together and have some good food and fellowship just hanging out by the lake. And everyone can always count on catching lots of fish! Be sure to bring an extra cooler. Since most of the teams will be staying at the water park The Tournament Director - Michael Nowell Eagle Lake - It was Freaking C-O-L-D!!! and there is plenty of room, we will have the registration and weigh-in at the Okatibbee Water Park hotel. There is plenty of parking and 2 boat landing on the property. We will NOT have the minnow truck this year. But Graham s Sonoco is just down the road and he will have plenty of minnows and custom tied jigs have proven to catch Okatibbee crappie like nothing else. 5 Please don t let anyone tell you it wasn t cold on tournament day. We covered our seats the night before, uncovered them when we left for registration. When we got to the lake after registration they were covered with ice. Thank god for our wind suits. It s not easy to fish with minnows in 20-degree weather. Your hands will freeze. We ve got to love this sport. I would have a hard time going to work at that temperature. I commend the kids again, Trae, Ben and Ashton, y all did great. Its wonderful to see you guys on the lake with your parents. It shows just how family oriented MCC is. 6 Eagle Lake Tournament Winners Congratulations to Jeremy Aldridge and Clint Egbert Eagle Lake Tournament and Big Fish Winners. Man did they blow the field away. On a day when other teams were struggling to just catch a fish, these guys caught almost two weigh-in limits. Jeremy says, We had 13 bites and we caught 13 fish. We never caught a small fish. Eagle is my favorite lake. I ve fished Eagle 3 times and won 2. Not too bad for some newcomers to Eagle. We checked the pressure Saturday morning, it was extremely high. We know the fish would be deep and sluggish. We used the smallest minnows we could find and found the deepest holes we could find. If I had to say the main thing that caused us to catch our fish considering the light bite would be B n M 16 BGJP poles. They were GAME CHANGERS. We tied our own minnow rigs and used 3/4 oz. weights. Our spread was around 3 feet. We fished 16 deep in 19 + water. Most of our bites came between 8am and 9am. says Aldridge. Our big fish came about 20 minutes till quitting time. We started caching fish a little before 8am, everything in the boat was frozen, we had to dip water with our minnow bucket and a coffee cup to fill our livewell, even the plug was frozen. Clint did this while I manned the poles. We had 5 fish that were 2# s plus, we had to weigh a 1.5 and a 1.75 pound crappie. We had no idea our fish would win. says Clint. Well unless something drastic happens to Clint and Jeremy the Points Race is over. However Jeremy has another boy coming in January. Looks like Clint will have it all alone. Bernard Page 6

7 Finishing in the 2nd place slot again was Vic Finkley and Kim Gray with 10.30# s. Vic and Kim gladly gave me an interview. I asked Vic what their setup was, We used extremely small minnows on B n M 16 PST poles with Capps & Coleman tips. We use the tips because you can see the bite so easily. If the fish breathe on the bait it will show on the tip. We fished 16 deep in 17 feet of water. We put our drift socks and chains out to slow us down. We moved about.2mph with the wind. We would pick up a fish every so often. I think we caught about 10 for the day. This is Vic and Kim s 4 top 5 finish and their second 2nd place finish. This is what s required to stay on top. Team Finkley and Gray has made it a lot easier on me, I don t have to change photos or my write-up on them too much. Currently they re in 2nd place in the Points Race, heading up north to their home lake. I know it s going to be hard to beat them on the COE lakes and to be truthful on any lake. Let s not forget, they won Okatibbee last year. I remember where they caught their fish last year and you can be sure I ll be sitting on that spot first thing on tournament day. Knowing my luck that still won t help my situation. When you re hot, you re hot, and that is the bottom line. Bernard Page 7

8 Eagle Lake 3rd Place Winners Congratulations to David Thornton and Shelton Culpepper with a 12.79# sack of specks and a 2.44# kicker. I hear these guys didn t have but 2 fish at 1pm. I can hear David saying, Shelton, Shelton, this ain t going to get it. We gotta move or we re going to get our butts kicked. Then they make a b-line to their top-secret pier. See, these guys live on Eagle, they know it like the back of their hand. Between them and Roger Womack, nothing gets left to chance. I just hate the way they mislead Roger. What I mean is, all week long they tell Roger, We ain t catching any quality fish. I ve warned Roger over and over, don t believe anything that comes out of their mouth, especially during tournament week. I can remember one time Don and I pulled up to Shelton just to say hello, he was acting kind of bizarre. I told Don, that guy is up to something. Come to find out, he had 3 fish on his poles at one time and refused to pull them up in front of us. All I can say is, Two can play that game, Mr. Culpepper. We pull up to a pier on the north end of Eagle, I flipped a jig under the farthest post and it didn t stop. Bam, get the net Shelton. It was on for the next 30 minutes. We caught 7 or 8 good fish, then the 2.44#. I felt a lot better going to the weigh-in with 12+ pounds instead of 3+ pounds. Our main objective was to beat Cat Walker. That s been our goal all year long. We got overwhelmed last year listening to his stories about winning Washington (largest MCC tournament in history) and the MCC Championship (largest payout ever). I told him it was his partner, Will Clark and not him that was winning. Guess he sees it now. says Thornton. We ve been lucky this year so far, but we ve got long ways to go. Our approach this year is to fish our style, catch every fish that bites. Not listen to what others are doing and be quiet about our catch in practice. We re well versed in keeping that between the two of us., says David. I have to admit, Culpepper and Thornton are two of the most consistent crappie tournament fishermen I ve seen. They re superb slow-trollers and jig fishermen. They ve even mastered power-trolling. They have the best of equipment and they study the game. By that I mean David will ask questions and then try it till he makes it work. To Shelton and David, all I ask is, back off on Johnny Walker. He s a senior citizen, don t be so hard on him. Oh, I forgot, y all senior citizens too, in that case, lay the wood to him. Before long he ll have a Triton Crappie Boat like y all. 12 Chotard / Eagle Lake Adventures - by Joey Lowrey Dad and I had been planning for weeks to head over Wednesday morning and get some pre-fishing done. As most of you know, Thursday before the Washington tournament, he had a hip replacement. He had been on top of his therapy doing all he could to be ready for this tournament. We talked the Sunday before and had mapped out all the details. Monday, we even prepped our poles. However, Monday night he called with the sad news that he just wasn't ready! Out of all the lakes MCC fishes, this was the week I really needed to fish with him. He has faired really well at these lakes over his tournament fishing tenure. I haven't fished Eagle in about 9-10 years and Chotard in 4-5. I asked my 17-yearold cousin Hunter Shafer to fish with me. He was excited and more than happy to go. He's an A student and had not skipped a day of school this year, so we struck out Thursday afternoon. Friday morning, we decided to start at Chotard. We spent about an hour riding and looking, and let me tell you there is absolutely no shortage of fish in this lake!!! My graph was lit up with fish from the time I turned it on. We found a couple of schools that looked like they had some crappie in them. After a crash course in unwrapping and setting out poles, I spared him the pain of putting minnows on to start. We fished for a couple of hours with no luck. We decided to make the run up to Albermarle. We idled up the lake zig-zagging, checking the graph. I didn't remember the depths of this lake either. We got up to where all the camps are in the deeper part of this lake and found schools of fish that seemed to have crappie in them, also. There were several other boats in this area of the lake as well. We set out the poles and gave them a shot. It was not long and I caught a small one. All the other boats in the area had cleared out and out of nowhere; one of my poles buried and the fight was on!!! I immediately knew that it was not a crappie on the line and it was not fighting like Gar either. 15 minutes later it surfaced and we saw what we thought was a huge catfish. It vanished as fast as it surfaced. For all of you who don't know me, I love to catch all kinds of fish, especially big ones!! Hunter acted fast in helping to move poles to where I could get to the back of the boat to fight this fish. We spent 30 minutes tiring this big guy out. There was no way we could net this fish. Still thinking it was a big catfish, I gave Hunter the pole and put my gloves on to grab it. He surfaced it, I grabbed the line and as soon as I got my hands on it I realized this was no catfish... We had just landed a 50 pound plus Asian carp! That 18' B&M with 10lb line had just whipped that giant! We high-five-ed and took some pictures. Hunter was in the back sending the pictures to me when one of his poles hit. I grabbed it and it had about a 2 pounder on it. We had no more than gotten that fish off and - bang another good fish. We marked the spot and carried on catching only a Gar. Hunter caught on quick on how to detect a bite but was having trouble getting the poles out of the holders. He seemed to double clutch or let the pole go slack and tighten back up to nothing every time. He wound up not putting a fish in the boat Friday. We decided we would split the day Saturday; go fish Albemarle in till 10 and then leave and go to Eagle. We said if we had a 2 pounder at 10 we would stick to it. We had it all to ourselves! We fished until 8:30 before we saw another boat. Finally, around 9, Hunter stuck one and shouted, "this ain't no Gar"! I had the net ready and he caught his biggest crappie to date 2.56! We tried to celebrate but another pole went down and he had another good fish on! I netted it and we were fired up with the hope of 5 more. We never had a lull in getting bites the Gar kept us on our toes all day. We finally landed one more crappie around 11. We had fished up over 120 minnows by 1. We loaded up and headed to the weigh in. As all the big fish were weighed in, Hunter would look at me and ask is mine that big? I'd shake my head yes and he would just grin. I knew the fish was over 2.5 pounds. We were getting down to the end and Jeremy and Clint brought those Sows to the scales! When they flopped that 2.58 in, I told him that maybe bigger. He just kept grinning. A few more teams weighed and Hunter's fish held on to second big fish. We finished 16th, overall. I'm pretty sure he's hooked now and that my friends is priceless!
