1 Women s Closing WOMEN'S DIVISION NEWSLETTER Fall 2017 A Message From Linda Our 2017 Women s Division activities have officially come to a close, but if you are like me, I will be golfing till the course closes. Thank you to those who played in our Closing Scramble, attended the Annual General Meeting, and enjoyed the delicious banquet. On behalf of your Executive, Thank you everyone who participated/contributed to our successful 2017 season at Ken-Wo to you, the members; to our Executive; to the Ken-Wo clubhouse staff and to the grounds crew. It was a pleasure to be a part of and share with you Ken-Wo s 2017 golf season. We are sad to see Holly Comstock leave the executive you will be missed Holly; however, we are happy to welcome Susan Markham-Starr and Cathy Coates to our team. Congratulations to our season s award winners who were presented with trophies and awards at our Closing on October 5 th the complete list of winners is printed below. The Division continues to be one of the most active in the Province and it is due to your participation, commitment and passion for golf. Looking forward to next year, your executive would like to redesign the Wall of Fame in the locker room, incorporating all our past photos for display; to complete the profiles of the names on our trophies to display in the locker room; to identify worthy names to put on our generic trophies; begin an evening women s group, specifically for those who cannot golf Thursday s, over and above the special Tuesday s organized by Laura. We will also be reviewing the Club Championship format to determine if we can make improvements and attract a larger number of women. Next year we will be losing 7 Executive members, as you will agree is a significant number of volunteers to replace in one year Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, Match Assistant, 9-hole Players Representative, House and Prizes. Please consider putting your name forward to fill one of these vacancies, sooner rather than later, and let Nikki know which position you wish to occupy. Finally, it was my pleasure to be a part of the proceedings for the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Winnie Horton at our October 5 th Closing. A well deserved honour congratulations Winnie! 3 This award was presented to Winnie at our Closing Ceremony on October 5 th and a summary of the Citation for Winnie follows: A lifetime member of Ken-Wo (since 1968); in 1973 attended her first field day and won 4 th Division; 8 times Ken-Wo Women s Club Champion; NSGA Senior competitions she was runner-up in 1993 & 1994 and Champion in In the age group Champion in 2008 and runner-up in A member of five NS teams at Canadian Championships Amateur teams in 1986 and 1998 and Senior teams in She has held most of the positions on the Women s Executive; has been Women s Division President and member of the Ken-Wo Board of Directors three times. At the Ken-Wo Club level she coordinated Junior Development in 1982, and Was tournament Chairperson for the 1985 Canadian Junior Girls Championship hosted at Ken-Wo. In the era of the NS Ladies Golf Association she held several positions including President in Winnie also compiled a History of the Club published in the Spring of Dear Members of the Ken-Wo Women s Division: I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the honour you bestowed on me on October 5 with the Life Time Achievement Award. I will always cherish it. I did not have any chance to thank all my friends at Ken-Wo for being present at the Celebration of Life for John held in June. It was very heartwarming to see so many of you there as support for Kathy, John, and myself. Winnie So...Who Won? Congratulations to all the Winners!!! Sept 7 th No winners cancelled due to rain. At the Annual General Meeting the Committee chairs gave reports the following is a brief summary: The Treasurer reported there is a healthy bank balance and our Birthday Fund now totals $

4 The 14 th Scramble for Cancer Care raised $13, to contribute to the Cancer Care Navigation Unit The Club Championship had 40 participants who competed in 18 hole and 9 hole divisions Publicity prepared 4 Newsletters plus this Fall edition and several photo posters for public display The Match Committee organized a full slate of activities/competitions over the season with excellent participation by both 18 hole and 9 hole players NEWS FROM NOVA SCOTIA GOLF ASSOCIATION NSGA Cobra Puma Junior Girl's Player of the Year Meghan McLean Ken-Wo Golf Club Meghan McLean finished off an amazing junior career with her third Cobra Puma Junior Girls' Player of the Year title. Highlights of her year included first place finishes at the Nova Scotia Junior Championship and Future Links Atlantic Championship as well as finishing first and second respectively at the MJT Chester Championship and the CJGA Penn Hills Championship. McLean is now a freshman at the Central Connecticut State University. JUNIORS Zone Player of the Year Valley Zone Heather McLean Ken-Wo Golf Club DID YOU KNOW? Our Course Assistant John Aker has retired after 8 years on the job. Thanks John and look forward to seeing you playing more golf instead of driving around the course supervising all of us. Ken-Wo Prize Winners - Ken-Wo women who bought raffle tickets from Meghan McLean this past summer in support of CCSU Women s Golf, won 3 out of the 18 prizes: Winnie Horton (Golf Shoes); Martha Barry (Range Finder); Coleen Youden (Ping Putter). Scramble Fore Cancer Care - Beth would love to hear from one of you who has an interest in volunteering for her Committee to help raise needed funds for the Cancer Navigation Unit.
