Saving Money with MOL Products (By Gary Grandstaff) High petroleum prices are impacting golf course budgets around the world. What can you do to keep from cutting other line items in your budget to pay for fuel and fertilizer price increases? One method is to use I-MOL or other MOL Products to accomplish two things; (1) decompose organic matter into readily available nutrients and antibiotics for the plant, and (2) generate better water infiltration and eliminate localized dry spots. These nutrients are nutrients you don t have to buy they are free simply by increasing microbial activity through the decomposition of organic matter (thatch). With weekly applications of MOL Products your decomposing thatch layer becomes a constant source of nutrients being provided for the turf by the microbes Mother Nature at its finest! Along with 3% to 5% nitrogen and 5% P and K, natural antibiotics and natural wetting agents are

These microbes also produce enzymes within the plant, roots and microbe populations that increase plant vigor and overall health leading to improved stress relief. The second benefit is thatch reduction which results in better water infiltration, fewer localized dry spots, smoother greens, and less scalping on fairways midway through summer. Increases photosynthesis for improved stress relief from shorter heights of cut, high temperatures, increased traffic and overall summer stress. In summary, you will achieve free nutrients, stress relief, more photosynthesis, smoother greens, and improved overall plant health all while saving money to pay for increased fuel prices. An additional benefit is that you will reduce surface organic matter sufficiently to be able to eliminate one aerification on greens and to a point on fairways where deep slicing to relieve compaction is all that is required. Less disruption on the golf course leads to more rounds and increased revenue which helps maintain your budget. FTGU s Fourth Annual Superintendents Invitational Seminar Monday, October 29, 2006 at The Pete Dye Golf Club Bridgeport, West Virginia. This year the seminar began on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with drinks and hor dourves as guests rolled in. At 6:30 p.m. we proceeded up to the clubhouse for a buffet mixer. On Monday the speakers covered the following topics: Dick Psolla, Agronomist & Soil Consultant, REP Consulting on "What is a Balanced Soil and Why is Soil Balance Important"; Eric Psolla, Agronomist & Soil Consultant, REP Consulting on "Soil Moisture Management in USGA and California Greens"; Max Schlossberg, Penn State Assistant Professor of Turfgrass Nutrition / Soil Fertility speaking on Thatch Reduction By the Systematic Application of I-MOL - A Tale of Two Soils ; and Peter Maybach, President of M&M Consulting Inc. speaking on Understanding Your Water Quality and How It Effects the Soil Physics. After the 2007 Creeping Bentgrass Putting Green Tatch Decomposition Through Systematic Surface Application of I-MOL presented by Max Schlosberg, he returned this year to speak on the outcome of the second study. The conclusions from Max s second study Thatch Decomposition Through Systematic Surface Application of I-MOL are summarized as follows. The entire report can be found on our website at and at Max s web site at sbergm.cfm Conclusions: Under the described laboratory conditions, I-MOL applications to turfgrass enhanced microbial-activity relative to the pos. control; Reductions in cellulose + lignin content of thatch, relative to the control treatments, ranged from 23 to 8% over respective 5- to 6-week periods of I-MOL application; In a heavily-thatched soil turfgrass system, five weekly applications of I-MOL at the label rate significantly

MOL News Page 3 reduced total OM content by 17% in the upper 0.8 of soil (relative to positive control treatment); and Arbitrary doubling of the I-MOL label ratge did not enhance these described responses.
