6 Special Events Triathlon September THE 2ND ANNUAL KIAWAH ISLAND GOLF RESORT TRIATHLON Raceday: Sunday, September 21, 7:30am start Tri-Kiawah is a USAT sanctioned intermediate distance competition featuring a.7-mile swim, 25.1-mile bike and 6.1-mile run. This race is currently the only intermediate distance triathlon in the Charleston area to feature an ocean swim. The competition kicks off with the.7-mile point-to-point swim in the vast, beautiful and calm Atlantic waters off Kiawah s stunning coastline. The bike and run portions of the race take athletes along the scenic marshland, maritime forest and beachfront, allowing participants to capture the unique essence of Kiawah Island. Transition area will take place in Night Heron Park, a 21-acre spectator and family friendly park at the heart of Kiawah Island. The Kiawah Island Golf Resort Triathlon will not only test beginner triathletes, but seasoned competitors alike in a unique environment that showcases Kiawah s diverse natural habitats and unparalleled beauty. All race participants are REQUIRED to show photo ID (driver s license, passport or state issued ID) at Packet Pick-up. You may NOT have someone else pick up your packet. USAT members must bring their membership card. If you forget your card, you will be required to sign up for a one-day membership ($12). Yoga for Triathletes 5pm, Night Heron Park Prepare yourself for the race in this yoga geared for triathletes, or anyone looking for a good stretch. We ll use breath awareness, poses, and different stretching techniques to improve your alignment and release your shoulders, back, legs, and hips for the race. Packet Pick-Up 5:30am - 6:30am, Night Heron Park Race Start! Starting line at 7:30am! The race start will take place at the Sanctuary Beach, near boardwalk #27. In the event of a change in the ocean current, swimmers will be notified race morning of an alternate swim start and shuttles will transport accordingly. Awards Ceremonies Awards will take place at approximately 11:15am at the Finish Line Celebration in Night Heron Park. DINING OPTIONS Night Heron Grill Open For Athletes, Families and Supporters Open Sept. 20, 10am - 6pm & Sept. 21, 6am - 4pm Grab a bite to eat poolside! The Grill will be serving continental breakfast items from 6am-10am and lunch 10am-4pm during the Triathlon. This October, The Atlantic Room at The Ocean Course and Tomasso at Turtle Point, along with The Ocean Room, Jasmine Porch and The Lobby Bar at The Sanctuary will donate $3 for every Salmon Entrée sold and $1 for every glass of Sparkling Rosé or Skinny Cocktail sold. *The Lobby Bar will offer donation from Skinny Margarita and a Sparkling Julep. Open to everyone- families, caregivers, anyone touched by cancer, and anyone looking to learn more about prevention. The day will be filled with topical talks and informational forums by MUSC caregivers, survivors, and health and fitness professionals to focus on topics of healthy living, how to lower risks, prevention, and living life with and after cancer. Family activities including a jump castle, face painting, and lawn games will make it fun for everyone. Yoga, fitness classes, and a healthy cooking demonstration will also be offered. 9 Special Events Marathon The 37 th Annual Kiawah Island Golf Resort Marathon Raceday: Saturday, December 13, 8am start December 12 Rent your bikes! There s no better way to cheer on your runners than on one of our classic beach cruiser bikes! Available in a variety of sizes and options including training wheels, carriers and tow carts. Complimentary helmets included. Make your bike reservation before December 1 to get the special marathon bike rate. Bike reservations made on race day will be charged the full rate. The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston is a 27- bedroom home where families stay while their children undergo extensive medical treatment. Here, parents and children lead a life as normal as possible during their traumatic times without the financial burden of costly hotel and travel expenses. Dressed in full Native American regalia, Jim Sawgrass, a native Floridian and member of the Muskogee Creek Indian Tribe, will demonstrate the use of ancient Indian tools while discussing Native American culture. The program will conclude with the fancy footwork by his son, Cody Wildcat Sawgrass, a champion dancer. Event complimentary, and guests are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs. Turkey Trot* Thursday, November 27, 8:30am Rise & shine for our annual fun run/walk on the beach! Get your workout before the turkey eating and football watching! 37 Kamp Kiawah Kamp Kiawah Kamp Kiawah is a day kamp where guests ages 3-11 are able to create unforgettable memories with other children their age. Our creative themes and well-trained staff work together to ensure a once in a lifetime experience for each child. Reservations are required for Kamp Kiawah. All reservations made in advance will receive a $5 discount/child. Reservations are only reimbursed if cancelled 24 hours in advance. At least 3 Kampers must be signed up for Kamp to take place. Kampers should wear their bathing suits under their clothes, along with bringing a towel and sunscreen, Croc-type shoes along with athletic clothes are also recommended. Swimming is weather dependent. Kamp Kiawah takes place under the Night Heron Park Pavilion rain or shine. Helpful Tips for Parents! Activities are designed specifically for each age group. Swim Diapers are required for children not potty trained. Children must be 44 to ride the slides. If your child is under 50, please have your child measured at the pool shop. Children between 44 and 50 will receive a wristband for access to the slides. Life jackets and arm floats are not permitted on the slides. 52 Pool Rules Slides are for single riders only. This pool also features a lounging area surrounding the pool. The Night Heron Family Pool is the best place to cruise around on your inflatable alligator, sea turtle, or inner tube. This pool is reserved for lap swimming from 8 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. In the fall, this pool is heated to a comfortable temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit to enhance the feeling of an extended summer season. After colder nights, please allow a few hours to reheat to optimal temperature. West Beach Pool Sept. 3 - Oct. 20, Open Wed. - Sun., 11am - 3pm The West Beach Pool is located in West Beach Village at the Tennis and Pool Complex. This pool offers a relaxing setting to take in the sounds of soothing water with our beach-style entry down to our 5 foot deep swimming area. Opening daily at 8:30am, the Nature Center is located in Night Heron Park adjacent to the pool and the Night Heron Pavilion. Shell collecting has long been a tradition for many families, and finding that prized shell to keep on your shelf can continually bring back memories of your beach vacation on Kiawah. There are, however, some things to keep in mind when collecting shells, as they play an intricate role in keeping our marine environment in balance. 1. Shells provide a home for many animals once the original one is out. Hermit crabs frequently take them over, and many fouling invertebrates, such as oysters and barnacles, use them as a hard substrate to attach to. 2. Many shells have living animals inside them even if you cannot see them. Always double check by sticking your finger inside to make sure that no one is home before you take it. 3. Like us, mollusks use calcium from the water to help build their shell. As they break down and dissolve, it puts calcium back into the water for new shells to use and grow. Next time you are out looking for shells, think about taking just one of each species, or for every shell you collect, pick up a piece of trash. 69 Kayak Tours & Rentals Kayak Rentals Weather Dependent: Rentals may be cancelled due to wind and rain. Please call the Nature Center for updates. Kayak, PFD, paddle, map and instructions are included in the rental. Single kayak participants must be 14 years or older. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. 24 hour cancellation policy applies. Description Departure Point Rental Days/Times Price (plus tax) Ocean Kayak Rentals Previous kayaking experience is recommended. All rentals must be in by 6pm. Sanctuary Beach Access Daily, 10am - 5pm 1 hour rental: $25/single kayak $45/ tandem kayak Full Day rental: $65/ single kayak $95/tandem kayak Marsh Kayak Rental Previous kayaking experience strongly recommended. Participants must be wearing some form of footwear. We highly recommend shoes that are secure to your feet (flip-flops and slides are not recommended), Clothes you can get wet, water and sunscreen. Launching without a pass is prohibited, and will result in a fine. Staffing is based on weather conditions. Launch Fee per kayak: $5/Day or $25/week. We will start with some brief on-land instructions before heading out to the water for some on the water adventure and marsh exploration. Description Paddleboarding is a great new way to explore the Kiawah River during the summer. We highly recommend shoes that are secure to your feet; flip-flops and slides are not recommended. Private tours allow guests the freedom of scheduling and the ability to create your own experience. When scheduling a private tour, we ll make accommodations for all ages and ability levels in your party (even your 4 legged family members!). We have the ability to start when and where it s most convenient for you and can even come to your home, villa, room or dock. All nature excursions are available for private parties. For a unique experience, allow us to work with you to customize an excursion based on your group s interests and ability level.
