2 Opening Announcement Initiatory Ritual Short Version Before a team enters the contest room, the Contest Chairman shall make the following announcement: Are the Word Judge s ready? [Judge s Answer.] Are the Floor Judge s ready? [Judge s Answer.] We are about to witness the exemplification of Ritual Short Form by Lodge #. We ask your cooperation with them so they may perform without distraction. It shall be necessary for you to keep your seats at all times, silence all sound emitting devices, cease all conversation, and in no way disturb or distract the contestants. You shall pay no attention to the raps of the gavel, repeat no part of the ritual, or otherwise participate in the ceremony. There shall be no prompting by anyone as this could result in disqualification of the team. No one shall be permitted to enter or leave the contest room while the team is performing, no tape recorders are permitted, and there shall be no rituals in the room except those in the hands of the Judges, Ritual Officials, and the Contest Chairman. 2

3 Contest Proceedings- Continued In fairness to the team, please place all cameras, papers, hats, or anything else that you are carrying on the floor to avoid noise or confusion. There shall be no applause until the competing team has been dismissed by the chairman and has begun to disassemble. Lodge Inner Guard, please inform Lodge #, they may enter when ready and then orderly assemble before the Altar [With the Exalted Ruler centered approximately two paces in front center of the Altar. When the team and Candidate has assembled before the Altar and indicated they are ready, the chairman continues:] Exalted Ruler, are these the duly elected, appointed, and installed Officers of Lodge # for the fraternal year 20-20? [Exalted Ruler Answers.] Are there any substitutions? [Exalted Ruler: Answers.] [If yes] Is he/she from your Lodge? [Exalted Ruler: Answers.] Are there any repeats? [Exalted Ruler: Answers.] [If any substitutions:] The judges will please note the substitution(s) and or the repeats. You may begin the contest. [Officers and Candidate proceed to their chairs and are seated. The Contest begins] 3

4 Contest Proceedings Continued Closing Announcement Initiatory Ritual Short Version At the conclusion of the contest, when the team is assembled before the Altar, the Contest Chairman shall make the following announcement: Exalted Ruler and the Officers of Lodge #, on behalf of the District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, and the North Central District Ritualistic Committee, we thank you for your participation in this contest. The contest awards dinner and program will be held at pm (here/at) Lodge. We hope you, your officer s, coaches and candidate will be attendance. [To the audience]: team. You are dismissed. Please join me in a round of applause for the Tiler: Opens the door, allowing the performing team and spectators to exit. 4

5 Contest Proceedings Continued TILER S INSTRUCTIONS The Contest Chairman is responsible for the selection and training of the Contest Tilers and Hall Monitors. Prior to the contest, the Tilers should practice with their lodge team and be familiar with their duties and actions. The following instructions will assist in their training and should be posted for easy reference during the contest. Before the Contest: Be attentive to the door as soon as the prior team has finished. Allow coaches and members of the next competing team into the Lodge room prior to the performance. Check membership cards of those entering the contest room all must be current Elk members. Close door when Chairman is ready to begin the contest. Allow no one to enter the contest room after the Contest Chairman begins. When instructed by the Contest Chairman, invite the next team into the Lodge Room. Remain outside the door. During the Contest: The Tiler will remain outside the door, be attentive to the Contest, and allow no one to enter the Contest Room or disturb the performing team. 5

6 Contest Proceedings Continued After the Contest: When the Contest Chairman has dismissed the team, the Tiler will open the door. Door will remain open until the Contest Chairman is ready to invite the next team into the Lodge Room. Contest Chairman: Collects the Judges Score Sheets and submits them to the Scoring Committee. SCORING COMMITTEE S INSTRUCTIONS Lodge: No. 1. Review each THREE FLOOR JUDGES SCORE SHEETS for completeness. 2. Total each Floor Judges score for each of the individual Officers a. Record the individual Officers total score on the form and space provided. 3. Total the THREE FLOOR JUDGES, record in the following spaces a. Floor Judge A. b. Floor Judge B. c. Floor Judge C. Average (A, B, C) = D. 4. Review WORD ACCURACY JUDGES scores, record in the following spaces: a. Word Accuracy Judge #1 b. Word Accuracy Judge #2 (#1, #2) Totals = E. 7 5. Following the contest, the Scoring Committee shall provide to the contest chairman, the scoring results, along with the judges work sheets and Officers individual scores. Upon completion of scoring all participating teams and recording on the Official Results Log Sheet; turn ONLY the Official Results Log Sheet to the Ritual Contest Chairman. OF THE CONTEST CHAIRMAN, or his/her designee: Contest Chairman to review all Teams and individual Officer score results and determine the THREE Lowest Team Scores; the THREE Lowest scores for: Exalted Rulers, Leading Knights, Loyal Knights, Lecturing Knights, Esquires and Chaplains. TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL OFFICER AWARDS Awards for FIRST, SECOND, and THIRD place Teams with the lowest scores. Awards for FIRST, SECOND, and THIRD individual lowest scores of the Exalted Rulers, Leading Knights, Loyal Knights, Lecturing Knights, Esquires and Chaplains. Each participating Team Coach may be provided with a copy of the Team Scores and Individual Scores. 8
