2 President 2017 JOHN TURNER

3 Dear Member, PRESIDENT S MESSAGE It is often said that life is full of surprises and being nominated to become president of the Halifax, Huddersfield & District Union of Golf Clubs for 2017 was certainly one of those incredible moments for me. As a founder member of the youngest club in our Union, Crow Nest Park, I never expected that this tremendous honour would be bestowed on what for some, even in our local metropolis, is a somewhat hidden gem of a golf club. For me personally the privilege of this most prestigious appointment is unequalled. Without the support of my family and the officials and members of Crow Nest Park taking on this role would have been unthinkable. I owe a deep debt of gratitude to you all and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will work tirelessly to ensure that your trust in me does not disappoint. My time on the executive and this year as President Elect has been a steep learning curve. The schooling, guidance and direction received from your Executive, who give so generously of their time, is deserving of the highest level of praise and I thank them all for their outstanding work and support. I have been made incredibly welcome by all and would recommend anyone who is so inclined to put themselves forward to serve on the executive. My thanks go also to our sponsors whose support we rely on increasingly for our union activities. I congratulate Stuart Naylor, President 2016, on a job well done and I thank him personally for his friendship, vitality and comradeship. It is usual to welcome and introduce the new President Elect but John Lawrence needs no introduction. Suffice to say he deserves this accolade; I wish him well and look forward to working with him this year and his wise counsel will be gratefully received. Finally I hope that the changes to our rules and regulations for competitions and matches for the coming season, brought about in no small part by the feedback from member clubs, enhances your golfing experience in Enjoy the good weather that s on order and above all else relish this game we all love. John Turner 3

47 YIDU FIRST TEAM YIDU FIRST TEAM First Team Report Following the revitalising of the team in 2015, expectations and confidence were good, even though we had lost a handful of experienced players for various reasons. In the end, however, it turned into a nearly year. The first match of the season was against Bradford at Meltham, normally a winning venue for us and this seemed likely after the foursomes when we had an 8-4 lead. However, we managed to lose that match and it seemed to knock the wind out of our sails and perhaps our confidence. A second loss at East Riding followed, which meant winning the league was a tall order. A fantastic victory away at York (the highlight of the league season) and other victories at home to Teesside and Harrogate gave us an outside chance if we could beat the mighty Sheffield away at Bondhay. In the end it was too tall a challenge and a final loss at home to Leeds left us in 5th place with a played 7 won 3 record. To put things in perspective, since 2011, only York and Sheffield have won the league, HHDUGC are the team that has been in the mix more often than the other Unions finishing third once and second twice. Winner of the Tom Wild sponsored order of merit was Tom Hunt (Meltham) with Jake Hamilton (Huddersfield) second. Attention then turned to the 6 Man team Championship at Halifax Bradley Hall. A late injury withdrawal changed the team but still the opportunity to win this Championship for only the second time and never on home turf was available. 47

48 YIDU FIRST TEAM On the day the course set a stern challenge for all the Unions and the scoring was high. The HHDUGC team gave an incredible account of themselves, but in the tightest ever IDU championship after 12 rounds of 18 holes we were pipped to the title on count back by Sheffield (again!), courtesy of their better back 18 holes. This was a fantastic day and the players did their utmost, overcoming a 22 shot difference in handicaps. Thanks must go to all the supporters, caddies, and the members of the host club that made this a memorable but frustrating experience. Sheffield have now won the 6 Man every year since 2012, with HHDUGC runners up twice and York runners up on the other three occasions. In closing I wish to thank everyone involved with the team. From our direct sponsors Stromberg, Glenbrae and Tom Wild, for their continued support and involvement. To the players, who give up a number of Sundays each year to test their wits and patience. To the members of the Executive that help start the matches, deliver hydration and sustenance and offer the odd word of encouragement. I thank you all. We move into 2017 knowing that on our day we can beat anyone as long as we believe. Dave Pullen, Team Manager

53 YIDU JUNIOR TEAM YIDU JUNIOR TEAM Junior Team Report 2016 will go down as a very hard season, we lost all our matches finishing bottom of the table. Team selection was very hard, twenty nine different players turned out for the HH&DUGC Junior Team. Joe Lowson was the Team Captain. Ben Pullen won the Order of Merit and Harry Mowl was second. Looking forward to this year, we have a fairly young side, some of whom were blooded in 2016, so I am hoping for more success in the coming year. I would like to thank our sponsors. Rodney Taylor of Stromberg, Harry Haworth of Meltham Golf Club and Stephen Selbie of Selbie Opticians. Also thanks to Chris Naylor for his hard work organising all our team matches. We look forward to a good golfing year and hopefully, we will have a better season in Tommy Ward HHDUGC Junior Team Manager 53
