Employment Briefs - 6 Tips to Ace Your Phone Interview Employment Briefs October 6, 2014 Kevin W alls, PG A PG A ofam erica, Em ploym ent Consultan t (Cell) (H om e) kw alls@ pgahq.com 6 Tips To Ace Your Phone Interview If your resum e has made it into th e YES pile, th en th e first th ing a Club Search Com m ittee or a G eneralmanager willdo is a phone screening. The purpose ofth is is to test your communication skills, and to do a quick check of your skills and experience to determ ine ifit s w orth bringing you in for an interview. The sole purpose and th e on ly outcom e are for them to test your com m unication skills.
5 Page 5 of 7 Here are six im p ortan t tips th at willm ake sure you ace your phone interview : 1. Be Prepared Basic preparation steps include having your resum e in front of you, m aking sure you are on a good phone line w here there are no disturbances, and allocating enough tim e for the screening, even if it goes beyond what was scheduled. 2. Research the Club And The Interviewer/Committee The first question that is usually asked to break the ice from the em ployer is, W hat do you know about us? They also w ant to know if you h ad spen t th e tim e to do your hom ew ork, and if you do not know about som e particulars about the position you are applying or the facility, you w ill most likely be im mediately dow ngraded. So, spend som e tim e to ch eck ou t th e facility w eb site, social media and press releases, and see w hat m em bers say about them. You have a w onderful netw ork w ith fellow PG A professionals, u se th em! C on tact PG A professionals in the area and inquire ab ou t th e club, m anufacture sales representatives are usually aw are of the facility and provide som e feedback. Also, go to LinkedIn and review the background of the person conducting the interview. Check if the m anager you w ill be reporting to participates in LinkedIn groups and discussions, and see if you have anything in com m on. If given the opportunity, always try to b ring out the com m on ground in the phone interview w ith one of the search com m ittee members by including their success w ith th e du ties of the job you are applying. For exam ple, M r. Sm ith, when you were the CEO for IB M, I am certain that you w ere successfulwith leading your team because you had excellent com m unication with your m anagers and you expected high expectations. M r. Sm ith w illth ink how did he know that about m e? 3. Exude Energy And Interest The w ords you use account for only 15% of the effectiveness of your com m unications. Intonation and body language are m ost im portant, and since you are on th e phone, you live and die by your intonation. Put energy in your voice and dem onstrate a high levelofinterest. An old telem arketing trick is to have a m irror in front of you and sm ile w hen you speak since that au tom atically affects your ton e in a positive w ay. 4. Ask Questions and Build Rapport People hire people they like, so it is im portan t to tu rn th e interview into a conversation by asking intelligent questions. Show off your expertise by follow ing up their question with an insightfulquestion of your ow n. Those w ho just answ er questions and w ait for th e next question w illlose here. U se a conversational ton e, as if you are having lunch w ith a friend, telling a story, instead ofjust responding to questions. For exam ple, here are tw o w ays to respond to, C an you tellm e about your experience at XYZ Country Club? A t XYZ Country Club, I w as hired to oversee th e golf operations at the facility. Or "You know, that w as a really challenging experience because I had to create a new policies and procedures that w ere the result of going from private to a resort. You can just im agine how tricky that w ould be since there w ere so m any differences betw een them, and I had to educate and retrain our entire staff on delivering higher expectations then th ey w ere accustom ed to delivering in th e past. Which is more interesting? It is immediately clear m any tim es w hen speaking w ith candidates that have interview ed for a job and they have answ ered the questions in a fairly m onotone m anner which is not exciting. 5. Ask the Most Important Question Clubs have a reason they are looking for a new talented golf p ro fessionaland it is your job to find out w hat their chief source of pain is. Clubs do not w ant to hire status quo, they w ant to be better than before. Do th is by asking: W hat is th e b iggest challenge som eone willface in this job in th e next six m onths? This lets you target your responses and dem onstrate how you have successfully handled these challenges before. 6. See If They Have Any Concerns Don t just end the call wondering how you did, ask them. If you are going for the position, this is m andatory. State som ething like: "Based on w hat w e discussed today, do you think I am a good candid ate for th is position? Now, w hen they respond, you can handle any concerns they m ay have. U sing these six
