HORSE JUMPING BY: MIA FANNING
LESSON OBJECTIVES PEERS WILL DESCRIBE THE STEPS A HORSE TAKES TO CLEAR A JUMP
DISCUSSION RULES 1. LISTEN ACTIVELY 2. ASK ALL (SERIOUS) QUESTIONS 3. ALWAYS TELL ME IF YOU ARE HAVING ANY TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING THE CONTENT.
TWO-POINT TWO-POINT IS THE POSITION YOU GO INTO BEFORE AND WHILE YOU ARE GOING OVER THE FENCE THIS POSITION CAN ALSO BE CALLED JUMPING POSITION IN TWO-POINT YOU LIFT YOURSELF OUT OF THE SADDLE AND YOU LEAN FORWARD OVER THE SADDLE AND HORSE S NECK A LITTLE BIT.
THE STEPS OF A JUMPING HORSE THERE ARE 5 STEPS A HORSE TAKES TO CLEAR A JUMP THE FIRST STEP THAT THE HORSE TAKES IS CALLED THE APPROACH THIS STEP IS WHERE THE HORSE COMES UP TO AND PREPARES FOR THE JUMP. THIS IS ALSO THE STEP WHERE YOU NEED TO START LOOKING AHEAD.
STEP 2 THIS STEP IS CALLED TAKE-OFF. IN THIS STEP THE HORSE GATHERS ITSELF TO JUMP. THIS IS THE STEP WHERE THE RIDER GOES INTO TWO-POINT THIS STAGE THE HORSE S HIND FEET ARE STILL ON THE GROUND.
STEP 3 THIS STAGE IS CALLED SUSPENSION. THIS STEP THE HORSE IS FULLY IN THE AIR. IN THIS STAGE THE RIDER IS FULLY IN TWO-POINT (AND CAN MOVE A LITTLE BIT FARTHER UP THE NECK DEPENDING ON THE HEIGHT OF THE JUMP) THIS STEP CAN ALSO BE CALLED FLIGHT BECAUSE THE HORSE IS NOT TOUCHING THE GROUND (AND FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE YOU DO FEEL LIKE YOU ARE FLYING.
STEP 4 THIS STEP IS CALLED LANDING THIS IS OBVIOUSLY CALLED THE LANDING BECAUSE THIS IS THE STAGE WHERE YOUR HORSE LANDS IN THIS STAGE YOU STAY IN TWO POINT YOU DON T COME OUT OF TWO POINT UNTIL THE NEXT STEP IN THIS STEP YOUR HORSE HAS HIS/HER FRONT FEET ON THE GROUND
STEP 5 THIS LAST STAGE IS CALLED RECOVERY. THIS IS THE STEP YOU COME OUT OF TWO- POINT THE HORSE HAS ALL OF HER/HIS FEET ON THE GROUND THIS STAGE IS CALLED RECOVERY BECAUSE THE HORSE (AND RIDER) GET ORGANIZED AGAIN AFTER FINISHING THE JUMP JUST BEFORE THE RECOVERY STAGE IS A SHORT STAGE THAT ONLY LASTS FOR A SECOND BEFORE THEY GO DASHING OF TO THE NEXT ONE!
TYPES OF JUMPING THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF JUMPING SHOW JUMPING AND CROSS COUNTRY
CROSS COUNTRY JUMPING CROSS COUNTRY IS A JUMPING SPORT THAT IS MADE TO LOOK MORE LIKE SOMETHING NATURAL IT IS USUALLY LOCATED IN WOODED AREAS IN CROSS COUNTRY THE RIDER HAS TO FOLLOW A SPECIFIC PATH THROUGH THE JUMPS IN THIS EVENT YOU ARE TIMED. THE JUDGES ARE STATIONED AT EACH JUMP TO JUDGE YOU ON TIME AND CORRECT COMPLETION OF THE JUMPS IN YOUR TURN YOU GET POINTS TAKEN OFF IF YOU DO THE JUMPS IN THE WRONG ORDER, OR IF YOUR HORSE REFUSES THE JUMP. ( 3 TIMES AND YOU GET DISQUALIFIED)
STADIUM/SHOW JUMPING SHOW JUMPING IS ONE TYPE OF JUMPING SHOW JUMPING IS LOCATED IN AN ARENA UNLIKE CROSS COUNTRY WHICH IS IN WOODED AREAS BUT LIKE CROSS COUNTRY YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW A SERIES OF JUMPS OF VARIOUS HEIGHTS IN THIS EVENT YOU ARE JUDGED ON YOUR APPERANCE, YOUR RIDING ABILITIES, YOUR HORSE S SHOWING ABLITIES, AND YOUR TIME. IN THIS EVENT YOU GET POINTS TAKEN AWAY IF YOU KNOCK DOWN JUMPS, TAKE THE COURSE WRONG, OR IF YOUR HORSE REFUSES A JUMP. ( IF YOUR HORSE REFUSES 3 TIMES THAN LIKE IN CROSS COUNTRY YOU ARE DISQUALIFIED)
DISCUSSION MATERIAL THIS IS A VIDEO OF A MAN JUMPING IN A HORSE SHOW. LOOK AT HIM OVER THE JUMP. HE IS GOING INTO HIS TWO-POINT POSITION. TRY TO SEE THE DIFFERENT STAGES THAT THE HORSE GOES INTO BEFORE AND OVER THE JUMPS.
TASK AND QUESTIONS FOR THE TASK I HAVE THIS VIDEO OF A LESSON I TOOK A FEW WEEKS AGO I WANT YOU TO TRY TO SEE THE DIFFERENT STAGES OF JUMPING THAT I HAVE TAUGHT YOU AT THE END OF THE VIDEO WE WILL DISCUSS THE VIDEO AND HOW WELL YOU COULD SEE THE STAGES AND MY MOVEMENT. FUN FACT: THIS IS MY FAVORITE HORSE THAT I RIDE HERE, HER NAME IS KANDI
QUESTIONS 1) WHICH OF THE STEPS DO I GO INTO TWO-POINT? 2) WHEN DOES MY HORSE HAVE HER TWO HIND FEET ON THE GROUND? 3) WHAT STEP DOES THE HORSE HAVE ALL HER FEET IN THE AIR? 4) WHAT KIND OF JUMPING IS THIS? A. SHOW JUMPING B. CROSS COUNTRY
EXIT SLIP FIRST BEFORE WE DO AN EXIT SLIP I NEED YOU TO TELL ME IF YOU ARE HAVING ANY TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING ANYTHING THAT WAS JUST SAID. 1. WHAT IS THE THIRD STEP OF THE STAGES THAT A HORSE TAKES TO CLEAR A JUMP? 2. NAME ALL THE STEPS TO CLEARING A JUMP. 3. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CROSS COUNTRY AND SHOW JUMPING?
