13 Severe Weather Plan Pre-event Planning: The following severe weather can be anticipated in Broome County in June: High / low temperature Rain w/ lightning Strong, damaging wind Tornado Flood Thunder & Lightning (NYSPHSAA Thunder & Lightning Policy) 1) Thunder and lightning necessitates that competition be suspended. The occurrence of thunder and/or lightning is not subject to interpretation or discussion - thunder is thunder, lightning is lightning. 2) Any person who hears thunder or sees lightning may notify any official, event organizer or Union Endicott High School staff member (identified by a STAFF t-shirt or other official identification). 3) People will not be permitted to stand under or near trees, poles, antennas, or towers. 4) After thunder and/or lightning have left the area, there will be a 30-minute pause after the last boom is heard or strike is seen before resuming competition. a) Event organizers will maintain the official 30-minute clock 5) The All-Clear signal will be provided through the stadium s public address system as well as by inperson announcements in shelter locations. Severe Weather Notification: In the event that severe weather approaches the Union Endicott High School venue, event organizers may direct all athletes, coaches, officials, attendees and staff to immediately seek shelter indoors. If it becomes necessary to evacuate outdoor areas, an announcement will be made through the stadium s public address system. This announcement will be the signal to immediately evacuate all outdoor areas. Severe Weather Shelter (Area of Refuge): The high school gymnasium has been designated as the primary shelter (area of refuge). Shelter from rain & lightning may be sought inside a vehicle with a solid metal top (e.g. bus, van, car) if that vehicle can be reached safely and prior to the arrival of lightning. If you stay in your vehicle, DO NOT open the door or allow anyone to touch the sides of the vehicle as it dissipates the lightning strike around it. An automobile is not as safe as a secure building but it provides more protection than being unsheltered. Lost and Found Lost and Found is located in the Press Box. If you have found an item you may bring it to the Lost & Found location or you may turn the property over to any Union Endicott staff member (identified by a STAFF t-shirt or other official identification). To claim lost property you must report to the Lost & Found location and describe your property in detail. Ver. 1.1 Page 12 of 13
