Box 4038, Lexington, KY Telephone: Second-Crop s NO DISTORTION AT THE TOP Distorted Humor continues to prove he s the best among the 2003 class of second-crop sires. The 10-year-old son of Forty Niner, out of Danzig s Beauty (by Danzig), prevailed in a tight race with Elusive Quality to the top of last year s juvenile sire rankings by progeny earnings. Now Distorted Humor is the undisputed leader with $4,334,433 in lifetime earnings through July 11. Nearly half of that amount comes from Funny Cide, this year s Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner, who is only $615 shy of the $2 million mark. Distorted Humor s position at the top, however, is bolstered by more than just money. He is the leading Stallion P R O F I L E: Storm Creek Storm Creek s first crop was a freshman stallion manager s dream they won, won early, and won big. Out of 67 named foals, 47 (70%) started, 16 (24%) won, three of them became stakes winners, and one Stormy Pick achieved that all-important grade I status. Storm Creek, who one year earlier had been a $5,000 stallion at Mockingbird Farm near Ocala, Fla., became North America s second-leading first-crop sire in 2000 by earnings ($1,044,203). He was in a fiveway tie as the leading producer of stakes winners with first-crop leader Honour and Glory, Unbridled s Song, Afternoon Deelites, and A.P Jet. He also was tied with Unbridled s Song as the leading sire of stakes horses. They had eight apiece. Storm Creek shone in the marketplace like a new penny, and his offspring were selling well. His second crop as yearlings averaged $58,563 at the sales, which was 16% more than his first crop of 2-year-olds sold for at auction ($50,414). In 2000 Storm Creek s third crop of weanlings sold for an average $42,538 (for 13 sold), which was 148% higher than the sire s weanling COURTESY OF WINSTAR FARM Distorted Humor By Eric Mitchell second-crop sire by number of graded stakes winners (4) and is the leader by percentage of graded stakes winners (6.1%) among sires with 10 or more first-crop foals of racing age. Distorted Humor is also one of only six second-crop sires to have a juvenile stakes winner this year. How other second-crop sires compare with Distorted Humor can be seen in the following pages. TBH MarketWatch has analyzed this sire class by separating the performance statistics of their two crops to race. These statistics are compiled for 64 North American sires on pages six and seven and for 25 European sires on pages four and five. Most statistics (Continued on page 2) WILL THE CREEK RISE AGAIN? By Eric Mitchell average for the previous year ($17,143 for seven sold). Since its 2-year-old year, Storm Creek s first crop has had its racing statistics hold up admirably. The crop has 88% starters, 64% winners, and 6% stakes winners through July 9, For subsequent crops, however, things have been sliding. Storm Creek s second crop to race was competitive by percentage of starters (78%) and better than average by percentage of winners (60%) as compared with the offspring of other $10,000 sires standing between 1998 and 2000 (see statistics on page eight), but the second crop runners didn t possess as much quality as these other offspring or as their first-crop siblings. Two stakes winners emerged from Storm Creek s second crop and no graded stakes winners. The average earnings index (AEI) for this crop is AEI compares a stallion s progeny earnings with the progeny of all other stallions. A stallion whose progeny earnings equal the average earnings of all other progeny gets an AEI of 1.0. (Continued on page 9) 1 / TBH MarketWatch

2 Second-Crop s (Continued from page 1) are the cumulative results for each sire s first crop to race. The exceptions are lifetime earnings, the average-earnings index (AEI), comparable index (CI), average winning distance (AWD), and average starts, which consider all progeny, and any columns that specifically identify 2-year-olds. That Distorted Humor leads by the number of graded stakes winners is more impressive considering the WinStar Farm sire ranks 14th among North American second-crop sires by the size of his 2000 crop. Out of 66 first-crop foals of racing age, Distorted Humor has 50 runners (76% of foals), 33 winners (50%), seven stakes winners (12%), and nine stakes horses (13.6%). Ten of his progeny have earned $100,000 or more, which is also more than any other second-crop sire, and his AEI is a leading 3.76 among sires with 10 or more foals of racing age. Distorted Humor has certainly proven he can upgrade the mares bred to him since his book quality has a CI of Distorted Humor s stakes victories came in races from six furlongs to a mile. Most of them were seven furlongs, which is the distance at which he set a track record at Churchill Downs in So it isn t surprising that his progeny s average winning distance is 6.62 furlongs. What did surprise more than a few people was how easily Funny Cide handled the 1 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby and how well he performed in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes, in which he finished third. The only weakness in Distorted Humor s record is his progeny s 5.82 average number of starts. While his average is above the 2003 secondcrop sire norm of 5.75, he still ranks 33rd among his peers. Distorted Humor s average starts statistic is also well below the 7.69 average starts made by the progeny of Valid Leading NA s by No. Stakes Winners No. SW No.GSW (% Fls) (% Fls) Elusive Quality 11 (14.5%) 3 (3.9%) Tale of the Cat 8 (9.7%) 1 (1%) Distorted Humor 7 (12.1%) 4 (6.1%) Touch Gold 4 (4.7%) 3 (3.5%) Stormy Atlantic 4 (8.7%) 2 (4.3%) Grand Slam 4 (4%) 1 (0.8%) Swiss Yodeler 4 (9.1%) 0 (0%) Awesome Again 3 (4.1%) 2 (2.7%) Partner's Hero 3 (4.7%) 2 (3.1%) Coronado's Quest 3 (5.8%) 1 (1.9%) Concerto 3 (6.8%) 1 (2.3%) Skip Away 3 (3.3%) 1 (1.1%) Announce 3 (3.5%) 1 (1.2%) Expectations, last year s leading second-crop sire by earnings. Tale of the Cat, a 9-year-old son of Storm Cat, out of Yarn (by Mr. Prospector), has lifetime earnings of $2,919,357. Contributing to those earnings are eight stakes winners in his first crop, one more than Distorted Humor, and 18 stakes horses, which is twice as many as Distorted Humor. With 103 first-crop foals of racing age, however, the Ashford Stud stallion has an advantage by volume. The only other second-crop sire with more first-crop foals of racing age is Ashford barn mate Grand Slam who has 126. Souvenir Copy, the only other sire with a triple digit foal crop, is tied with Tale of the Cat at 103. Tale of the Cat has 50 winners (49%) in his first crop to race. He also has 24 2-year-old winners (23%), four winners of $100,000 or more (3.9%), and one graded stakes winner (1%). He is the leader among second-crop sires by current year 2-yearold stakes winners. 4 Second-Crop s (Continued from page 3) Hawthorne Gold Cup (gr. III), and the Breeders Cup Classic (gr. I). The average winning distance (AWD) of his progeny is 7.16 furlongs, which is the third highest among the top 10 second-crop sires by lifetime earnings. Deputy Commander, who also excelled at 10 furlongs, has the highest AWD of 7.75 furlongs followed by Touch Gold at 7.36 furlongs. It should be noted that Awesome Again, Deputy Commander, and Touch Gold are all sons of Deputy Minister. Based at Adena Springs Kentucky, Awesome Again did not start as a 2-year-old so it is not surprising that his juvenile earnings so far this year are a modest $33,550. He can produce topnotch 2-year-olds that excel from late summer through the fall. One of his two graded stakes winners is Toccet, who won the Champagne Stakes (gr. I) last October. Awesome Again has the second-highest AEI of 2.35 and a CI of 2.5. Among the top 15 sires by AEI, seven are outperforming the CI of the dams to which they were bred. Besides Distorted Humor and Elusive Quality, the over-achievers are Stormy Atlantic (2.10 AEI, 1.39 CI). Cyberspace (1.75 AEI, 0.85 CI), Partner s Hero (1.74 AEI, 1.58 CI), Swiss Yodeler (1.72 AEI, 1.06 CI), and Concerto (1.62 AEI, 1.42 CI). None of these stallions had a stud fee that was over $10,000 last year. Stormy Atlantic, Partner s Hero, and and Swiss Yodeler are the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth leading second-crop sires, respectively, by progeny earnings. Cyberspace led all stallions with highest number of average progeny starts (8.20 for 14 runners), and Concerto is the sixth leading sire by number of repeat winners (16). Some sires have move dramatically up the ranks now that their first crop has turned three. Swain, the Irish-bred son of Nashwan, out of Love Smitten (by Key to the Mint), moved up 30 spots compared to his rank by earnings at the end of The Shadwell Farm stallion, who ranked 51st with $99,474 in 2-year-old progeny earnings last year, is now the 13th leading second-crop sire with $990,847 in cumulative earnings. Swain s top runner is Dimitrova, a filly out of The Caretaker (by Caerleon), who recently won the $750,000 American Oaks Invitational by two lengths at Hollywood Park. Before being shipped to America, Dimitrova won the Leopardstown One Thousand Guineas Trial Stakes and was third in the Entenmanns Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I). Another major advancing sire is Cape Town. The son of Seeking the Gold, out of Seaside Attraction (by Seattle Slew), has moved up 13 positions by cumulative earnings. The Overbrook Farm stallion ranked 26th by juvenile earnings last year and is now sitting in the 13th spot. Cape Town s big runner this year is European Second-Crop s The tables on pages 6 and 7 and the ones below rank the top 64 North American second-crop sires and the top 25 European second-crop sires by cumulative earnings (Cum. 5 Bird Town, a filly out of Dear Birdie (by Storm Bird), who won the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) and the Acorn Stakes (gr. I). European Prince Desert Prince, who stands at the Irish National Stud, dominated most of the racing categories among second-crop sires based in Europe. The son of Green Desert, out of Flying Fairy (by Bustino), is the leading sire by lifetime progeny earnings ($1,319,783), stakes winners (7), stakes horses (13), and graded/group stakes winners (5) out of 91 foals of racing age. He ranks second with five earners of $100,000 or more and is second by number of 3-yearold winners with 16. Ranking second by number of stakes winners are Danetime, Peintre Celebre and Victory Note who have three each. Peintre Celebre, Nureyev-Peinture Bleue (by Alydar), is the leading sire by number of 3-year-old winners with 17. These sophomores have moved their sire up substantially among the second-crop sire ranks. Peintre Celebre ranked eighth last year as a first-crop sires and is now second with lifetime earnings of $1,100,506. The Coolmore stallion has produced two JOHN CROFTS Desert Prince graded/group winners, six stakes horses, and is the only secondcrop European sire with a 2-year-old stakes winners this year. The other European sires to have produced a graded/group winner are Victory Note, who has two, and the following that have one each: the late Air Express, Averti, Compton Place, Desert Story, and Hunting Hawk Compton Place, who stands in England, also ranks third with $971,919 in lifetime earnings. Averti, who also stands in England, is the leading second-crop European sire by percentage of stakes horses (18%).Air Express, who died in 2000, is the leading sire with a 3.69 AEI. Desert Story, who stands in Ireland, is tied with Peintre Celebre as the second leading sire by number of year-old stakes winners with three each through July 11. The leading sire with four 2- year-old winners is French sire Medaaly. Italy s Hunting Hawk leads the others with eight earners of $100,000 or more. It should be explained here that Hunting Hawk s $100,000 plus earners have all raced in Japan, and Japanese earnings are not included in the lifetime earnings reported on page four because the purses are radically higher than in the rest of the world. 9 (Continued from page 1) The statistics worsened for the third crop, 3-year-olds this year, whose percentage of winners has fallen to 34% and does not include any stakes winners. The AEI for this crop dropped to a dismal Storm Creek s change in book quality since he entered stud in 1997 offers a possible explanation for the decline in progeny racetrack performance. Two indices, the Comprehensive Index (CI) and the Class Performance Index (CPI), which reflect the quality of a stallion s book, both declined substantially since Storm Creek s first breeding season. The CI indicates how a group of mares are as producers, and the CPI shows how good a group of mares were as racehorses. Storm Creek was apparently bred to some of Mockingbird Farm s best mares his first year at stud. His book of dams had a CI of 1.74 and a CPI of The next year, however, the CI for his book fell to 1.59 and continued falling to 1.44 in 1999 and to 1.42 for the 2000 breeding season. The median CPI fell to 0.61 for Storm Creek s second season and never rose above 0.77 through the 2000 breeding year. The trend is not unusual. Farms trying to make a new stallion will typically breed higher-quality mares to him his first season in order to get an eye-catching first crop. That Storm Creek would produce a graded stakes winner in his first crop was not surprising. Storm Cat has been North America s leading juvenile sire six times including for 2002 when he had eight juvenile stakes winners, of which five were graded stakes winners, and he led all other stallions with 166 cumulative 2-year-old winners. Shawnee Creek, Storm Creek s dam, did not win her first race until she was 3 but she has produced two foals that won at 2 and three stakes winners out of nine foals of racing age. Storm Creek is her best foal. Kansas resident Tom Carey raced Storm Creek. He bought the colt from Kentucky bloodstock agent Mike Ryan, who acquired Storm Creek for $110,000 in the 1994 Keeneland July selected yearling sale from breeding partnership G. Watts Humphrey Jr., William Dedman, and W. Milward Dedman. Out of six starts at 2, Storm Creek won twice and finished third in the 1 1/16-mile Hawthorne Juvenile Stakes. At 3 Storm Creek won the eight furlong Sheridan Stakes (gr. III) at Arlington Park. Before his graded stakes victory, the colt had finished third in the Derby Trial Stakes (gr. III), second in the Promised City Stakes, and third in the Great West Stakes. Storm Creek retired to stud in 1996 and went to Florida. In 1999 Harry Mangurian Jr., who owned Mockingbird Farm, decided to sell off his breeding stock. Taylor Made Farms near Lexington, Ky., pursued and landed Storm Creek. The stallion s first breeding season in Kentucky was 2001, when he stood for $25,000. Storm Creek is now owned in partnership by prominent owners Aaron U. and Marie Jones and Taylor Made. "There are a lot of sons of Storm Cat out there, but there are not a lot who have already had a grade I winner," said Ben Taylor, vice president of the family owned and operated farm and head of the stallion operation. Among 12 sons of Storm Cat with at least two crops to race, only Catrail, Forest Wildcat, Hennessy, and Storm Creek have produced a grade/group I winner. Forest Wildcat has produced three who raced in the Northern Hemisphere while the other stallions have one each. "(Storm Creek) also gets runners on both dirt and turf," Taylor said. The improvement in the quality of dams bred to Storm Creek was immediate and substantial. The CI for the 2001 season jumped to 2.52, and the CPI more than doubled to Taylor Made, however, has had to adjust Storm Creek s stud fee while it waits for the progeny out of the higher-quality mares to mature (his first crop since standing in Kentucky are yearlings this year). Storm Creek s fee dropped to $15,000 for the 2002 season and is $10,000 this year. Taylor said he fully expects Storm Creek s numbers to turn around. "We are hoping these Kentucky crops will serve him well," he said. "His foals look good in a lot of cases better than he does. You will see some of his horses sell well." 10 Storm Creek (Continued from page 9) Statistical Profile On page eight is a detailed statistical picture of Storm Creek. The racing and commercial sales categories compare Storm Creek (A) with two groups: stallions who stood for $10,000 this year (C), of which there are 18 including Storm Creek; and 46 stallions that stood for $10,000 from 1998 through 2000 (D). The analysis also includes a list of breed norms (B), which are baseline figures for all Thoroughbreds. The breed norms were derived from the performances of all named North American foals born in 1990, 1991, and These are updated figures from what MarketWatch has previously used in its stallion profiles. It should be noted that with the exception of average earnings per runner, the norms have not changed substantially. Storm Creek, 16.0 hands Besides the overall percentages, the performance of Storm Creek s progeny are broken out by foal crop year in each category. It should be noted in particular that in the commercial sales section.the weanling, yearling, and 2-year-old statistics follow the foal crop and are not organized by sale year. While the racetrack performances of Storm Creek s progeny have progressively declined in recent years, his offspring are remarkably consistent in one area. They love to run as 2-year-olds. Storm Creek s first three crops have produced 22% 2-year-old winners, which is twice the breed norm (11%) and quite high compared with the two other comparable stallion groups, which each produced 16% juvenile winners. Storm Creek also has very high percentages of 2-year-old earnings (28%) and turf earnings (36%) as a percentage of total progeny earnings between 1998 and M W TONY LEONARD Storm Creek s Biomechanics By Frank Mitchell STORM CREEK MATES NEED BRAWN Amodified version of his sire Storm Cat, Storm Creek is neither so strongly made nor so lengthy as the Big Cat. Rather, he shows several of the characteristics of his maternal grandsire Mr. Prospector, which is not a bad thing, either. Mr. Prospector was a well-balanced horse, not only in terms of his body shape through the shoulder and hindquarters, but also in terms of the biomechanical elements of stride length, body weight, and propulsion power. His balance of these elements, allied with a quick stride and a good mind, allowed Mr. Prospector to show brilliance on the racetrack. In turn, he was able to pass along enough of his own positive qualities to become a stallion of great significance. With regard to Storm Creek, Mr. Prospector passed along a bit more height, which allows for greater stride length, and Storm Creek has, in addition to greater leg length, a somewhat lighter body. A lighter body can be a good thing since weight can slow a horse down, but a horse must have the proportion of body weight to propulsion power, which Storm Creek possesses. Like most of the good Storm Cats, Storm Creek has a strong hip and a good hind leg. Body size, however, becomes a somewhat different proposition when considering mates for Storm Creek. Unlike some other Storm Cats, which can have very big bodies, Storm Creek is well designed to mate with mares that would add body size, such as mares descending from the Northern Dancer, Nearctic, Halo, In Reality, and Valid Appeal lines. Any horse that would add more height or create a rangier frame wouldn t be the right way to go because every inch in height requires a commensurate increase in muscle power. The Valid Appeal and In Reality lines work because they are smaller horses with relatively light bone and a good proportion of body mass to their size. Northern Dancer really adds some body mass, particularly though the shoulder and hips while keeping the horse at a moderate size. These matches would help to provide the resulting foals with greater body mass or smaller size. Either result would help to counteract any tendency to legginess or light muscling.
