1 -SQA-SCOTTISH QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY Hanover House 24 Douglas Street GLASGOW G2 7NG NATIONAL CERTIFICATE MODULE DESCRIPTOR -Module Number Session Superclass- -Title- SH STUD MANAGEMENT -DESCRIPTION- Type and Purpose A specialist module which extends the knowledge and skills associated with stud management. This module should be taken at the end of a programme of equine modules. Preferred Livestock Breeding Management Entry Level Stable Management Learning Outcomes The student should: 1. know the feeding and management requirements of stallions, mares and foals boxed and at grass; 2. assist with the supervision of covering; 3. know the care of mare during pregnancy, at foaling and with foal at foot; 4. handles the mare and foal; 5. know the care of the stallion; 6. maintain breeding records. Content/ Context Safety regulations and safe working practices and procedures should be observed at all times. Corresponding to Learning Outcomes 1-6: 1. The feed requirements of the breeding horses at all stages of the breeding cycle. The suitability or limitation of feeds for feeding to breeding horses. Prepare and feed a ration to breeding stock whilst

2 boxed or at grass adjust the ration in accordance to the quality of feed and the condition of the horses. Feed at suitable time interval for the stage of development of the horse. Feeding and rations should be fed to all classes of breeding horses i.e. stallion, mares at different stages of pregnancy (and to mares with foals) and to foals. 2. All aspects of the covering including preparation of mare and stallion prior to trying or covering. Safety of horses and staff. Trying the mare and actual cover. 3. Care of the mare during pregnancy including pregnancy testing. The preparation of the foaling box. Preparation and treatments of the mare prior to foaling. Preparation of foaling quarters including all necessary equipment which may be required at birth or for treatment immediately after birth. The birth - signs of approaching posturing problems which may occur. 4. Handles the foal. Early handling of the foal. Techniques to be used for teaching the foal to lead. Precautions to be taken when introducing the foal to the head collar. Treatment of the mare and foal at both and immediately afterwards. Management of mare and foal up to weaning to include all tasks and early handling of the foal. 5. The feed and exercise requirements within and outwith the breeding season. Specific housing requirements. Specific handling requirements. Hygiene requirements. 6. Complete all breeding documentation as required for the type of horse and breed society for registered or in registered horses. Suggested Learning and Teaching Approaches Lectures/talks illustrated by the use of slides, video and films on all aspects of horse breeding. The use of speakers from the industry on specialist areas. -2 -

3 Visits to a range of stud farms to look at breeding stock and the stable requirements for brood mares, stallions and mares with foals. Practical demonstrations to illustrate all aspects of stud management. Practical sessions to allow the student first hand experience of the handling of breeding stock. Assessment Procedures Acceptable performance in the module will be satisfactory achievement of the performance criteria specified for each Learning Outcome. The following abbreviations are used below: LO Learning Outcome IA Instrument of Assessment Performance Criteria LO1 IA(1) Written exercise on the feeding and management of stallions, mares and foals. The student prepares an overall feeding programme for stallions, mares and foals. The programme should cover: feeding during pregnancy; daily feed requirements and how they are fed during the course of the day; feeds which constitute the daily ration. IA(2) Oral test consisting of 10 questions. states the precautions to be taken when feeding; states the suitability of the feeds being fed; explains the importance of timing of feeds; (d) outlines the change in feed requirements of the pregnant mare. LO2 IA Practical exercise in which the student assists with the supervision of covering. -3 -

4 ensures the safety of handlers or horses at time of covering; fits appropriate clothing. LO3 IA Written exercise covering the care for the mare during pregnancy, at foaling and with foal at foot. The student explains: (d) (e) pregnancy testing; preparation of foaling box; preparation and treatments of the mare prior to foaling; preparation of foaling box; what equipment is required at the birth and immediately after the birth. LO4 IA Practical exercise on handling the mare and foal. takes great care to ensure the safety and well being of the foal; teaches the foal to lead; fixes head collar to the foal. LO5 IA Written exercise. The student explains how to care for the stallion during and outwith the stud season. To include handling, housing and hygiene requirements. LO6 IA Folio of notes. The student compiles a folio of notes to include; service records of the mare; details of stud; documentation required for breeding records. -4 -
