1 Inland Communities Chapter of the California Dressage Society ICCcds.org Published Quarterly June 2011 MAY 1 st DATE BLOWN AND JUNE 5 th SHOW EHV d ICC s First Two Rated Shows Canceled SPRING FLING FLUNG - On Sunday, May 1st, gale force Santa Ana winds descended on the Inland Empire and forced the Inland Communities Chapter to postpone their first rated show of the year, the ICC Spring Fling. Show Chair Meg Hammond made the call after consulting with other members of the Board in a series of texts, s and phone calls early Sunday morning. The safety and welfare of the contestants was my main concern, said Hammond, It just scares me to think about a horse trailer blowing over on the freeway, the way so many big rigs do. Others pointed out that beyond the travel concerns, there is also the fact that many of the horses that come to the ICC shows are fairly green and asking them to deal with blowing debris and toppling ring rails can be a bit much. Lori Fairchild, the owner of Pepper Glen Farm in Norco, the site of the show, agreed with the decision, saying that if this was her show she would have made the same call. In This Issue Shows Postponed There is no decision yet on a new date but inside sources say the Board is looking at late summer. EHV WORRIES FORCE POSTPONEMENT - The ICC s June 5 th Show has also been scratched. The recent outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV 1), forced the Board to suspend the Chapter s June 5 th show. Shadow Ridge Equestrian Center s owner, Kathy Pavlich, said she is prohibiting the admittance of any outside horses to the facility. We are fine here and we want to keep it that way, Pavlich told the Contact. With the two postponements, the Board is scrambling to find alternative show dates. 2 Page 2 Chair Message: Greetings All - As you are all aware, there is an outbreak of a neurological form of Equine Herpes Virus 1, with the number of cases increasing, in the western states. Ten cases are confirmed in California as of this writing, with one horse euthanized a few days ago in Bakersfield. EHV-1 is spread "horse to horse." In order to protect our horses, the Inland Communities Chapter June 5 show has been canceled. It will be rescheduled when the outbreak has been controlled and it is once again safe to transport our horses. Breaking News! EHV Outbreak Forces CDS s Hand RAAC REQUIREMENT REDUCED The California Dressage Society announced recently that eligibility for this year s Regional Adult Amateur Competition will be reduced to a single qualifying score. According to the CDS bylaws, qualification for the RAAC requires a minimum of 2 scores from 2 judges that equal or exceed a minimum percentage, which varies with the level. The reduction of this requirement is for 2011 only and does not affect other eligibility requirements. The move comes in the wake of at least 17 shows being canceled due to the current spate of EHV-1 occurrences. With so many qualifying opportunities being lost, the Board had little choice, an unnamed source said. According to the CDS website, the purpose of these competitions is to provide an opportunity for all CDS Adult Amateur riders to qualify and compete against others of similar skills and experience. The regional nature of these shows help to provide our membership with a developmental path for gaining competitive experience, promote excellence and increase awareness of and support for the Chapters. 3 Page 3 SHADOW RIDGE EQUESTRIAN CENTER HOSTS Successful Adult Amateur Clinic The CDS Adult Amateur Clinic for the Southern Region was again this year put on by the ICC and hosted by Kathy and Tom Pavlich at their beautiful Shadow Ridge Equestrian Center in Highland, California. The coolish early April weekend saw 12 riders from across the southern chapters of CDS assemble at Shadow Ridge to absorb as much of Donna Richardson s generously given instruction, knowledge and tips as they could during the two-plus day event. Aside from our own Susan Williams and Fabian, the participants were: Tracy Todd David & Roxie - Eastern High Sierra Nina Klein & Hansa - Los Angeles Beverly Billingsley & Apple Latte - Tehachapi Anona Gasca & Weiss Guy - High Desert Sheri Hastings & Raleigh - Palos Verde Brenda Whiteley & Cookie - Las Vegas Katie Murphy & Cordial Challenge - San Diego Karla Mason & Oliver - Temecula Valley Marsh Carey & Nemo - Pomona Laura Converse & Denali - San Juan Capistrano Maria Michaleson & Wasabi Many of the riders entered the ring on the first day with a bit of trepidation, but all seemed to warm quickly to Donna s friendly and dynamic manner. With a short interview at the beginning of each ride, she was quickly able to understand each rider s ability and goals and design a 45 minute session that brought out the best in each horse and rider combination. In addition to the exercises and routines she put each rider through, she left them with a mini lesson plan that they could pursue on their own. At the completion of the event, CDS asked each rider to write a couple of paragraphs about their experience. Those short essays can be found in the May edition of CDS s Dressage Letters. Foal News Take Contact hears that there are a bunch of new potential club members most of the fourlegged variety but even one we know of who has only two legs (see picture below).
