1 NAME QUALIFICATIONS eg MSc, BSc Tim Whitaker PhD Applied Biology BSc Agriculture HND Horse Technology & Management BACKGROUND From leaving school I worked on thoroughbred studs in and around Newmarket for a number of years before going to Warwickshire College of Agriculture in 1989 to undertake the then only HE equine qualification in the country. On leaving College I gained further experience on a variety of sport horses studs, before returning to education to complete a BSc in Agriculture. I then started work for Writtle College in 1993 leading the development of their successful breeding and stud management provision. In 2008 was appointed Head of Research across the whole of Writtle College. In 2010 I moved to Duchy College in Cornwall to lead the development of their postgraduate provision, working on a large ESF project. Whilst there I undertook the role of Head of Higher Education working closely with the University of Plymouth. In 2014 I moved to Askham Bryan College to take on a strategic leadership role within the organisation as Campus Principal. I hold a PHD in Applied Biology awarded by the University of Essex. The PhD undertook a study of performance analysis, investigating the factors influencing penalty scoring within a specific sport. The work investigated the subjective nature of judging performance alongside specific environmental factors and their potential impact on performance. Further work critically evaluated pervious performance as a predictor of future performance through a variety of linear modelling techniques. I have published in a variety of peer reviewed sports journals including; Journal of Sports Sciences, International Journal of Performance Analysis in Sport and Comparative Exercise Physiology, across a range of sports including football, modern pentathlon and equestrian (dressage, show jumping and eventing). My current research has focused on comparative analysis of male and female competitors within equestrian sport. The sport offers a rare opportunity to study both genders competing against each other on an equal and unhandicapped basis. Additionally I have recently undertaken work investigating how biasing may affect outcomes when subjective judgements of performance are undertaken. I have a number of projects that I am currently working on including; coaching perspectives, the triangle of coach, parents and child participants; perceptions of referee biasing within junior rugby and football; the effect of moving to new stadia on a team s performance.
2 I have a broad and diverse higher education teaching background. Specifically related to the field of sports and equine sciences I have led delivery up to level 7 within performance analysis. I have taught honours year and masters students in such areas as notational analysis, reflective assessment of performance, predictive modelling for future performance, biasing and subjectivity in assessment, environmental factors that may impact on performance, research skills and dissertation supervision. At degree years one and two have taught across a range of subjects including contemporary issues, equine anatomy and physiology, sports science, issues in science, animal breeding systems, and reproductive management. CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECT(S) Most Recent Completed Supervisions Richard Miller (ResM Student) University of Plymouth, Master s Degree, Agricultural Science and Economics Optimisation of rebreeding strategy in UK Holstein dairy cattle - a multifactorial study' Rebecca Butland (ResM Student) University of Plymouth, Master s Degree, Agricultural Science and Economics Principal Component Analysis of the presences, risk of entry and risk of on-farm spread of Johnes Disease within the South West Region of the UK.
