Ask the participants what they should do if they came across this situation: February 2009, Australia: a) The 23-year-old man was stopped at Melbourne International Airport after arriving on a flight from Dubai b) Customs officials found two live pigeons stuffed in his tights after searching him; the birds were rolled in newspaper and polythene and attached to each of the alleged smuggler's lower legs. c) The also found two eggs inside a multivitamin container, a money belt containing plant seeds and undeclared samples of eggplant in the passenger's baggage der.pigeons/, and ific/australia/ /man-caught-smuggling-pigeons-in-histrousers.html 3

Ask the participants what they should do if they came across something like these 1. Ideally they should: 1. Leave the animal(s) where they are if they are contained. 2. Wait for experts to arrive and let them handle the animals. 2. These animals are: a) Spotted Wood Owl confiscated from trade b) There was a case where Tarantulas were sent by post in Indonesia. More details here: kiriman-disebut-popok-bayi-ternyata-ratusan-tarantula. Picture taken from arantula.arp.jpg 4

The IATA Live Animals Regulations (LAR) is the global standard and the essential guide to transporting animals by air in a safe, humane and in a cost-effective manner. 1. The LAR contains the most current and efficient practices for live animal cargo operations 2. It is an integral tool to achieve cost savings and avoid delays by guaranteeing shipments are problem-free and compliant with international or local regulations. 3. The LAR includes: a) Up-to-date airline and government requirements pertaining to the transport of live animals b) Requirements on handling, marking & labeling c) Information on the necessary documentation needed when transporting live animals d) A comprehensive classification of 1000 s of animal species along with the container specifications required for their transport. e) Guidelines for the non-air transport of live animals 5

Ask participants if they know any examples of diseases than can pass from animals to people. 1. ALL animals have the potential to spread disease to humans. a) Examples include: Rabies, Ebola, SARS, MERs, Tuberculosis, Anthrax, Bird Flu etc. 2. Disease transmission does not just apply to living animals meat and other products can also spread disease. 6

1. Some animals have a higher risk of transmitting disease to humans than others. a) These include: i. Primates (slow lorises, monkeys and apes) ii. Small rodents (rats, mice) iii. Carnivores (wild cats, civets etc.) iv. Bats v. Birds vi. Reptiles (turtles, tortoises, lizards etc.) 7

1. Trafficked animals are very stressed and may lash out to protect themselves. 2. They can be dangerous even those which you think might not be able to harm you. 3. Be careful and do not put yourself or others at unnecessary risk. a) Aside from the spread of disease, animals can harm by biting, scratching or by hitting. i. Even those without poison can do considerable harm. b) Cobras, poison dart frogs, scorpions and slow lorises have poison which they use to defend themselves. i. Please be aware that in some circumstances, even dead snakes can bite. c) Be careful of: i. Claws - eagles, owls, cats etc., ii. Sharp beaks - eagles, owls etc., iii. Sharp teeth - cats, monkeys, crocodiles, lizards etc. d) Some animals may swipe at you i. With their heads or tails - crocodiles, lizards etc.; or ii. In the case of birds - with their wings. (notes to be continued on next page) 8

(notes continued from previous page) 4. In 2015 there were two cases where passengers were stung by a scorpion on a flight. a) In at least one of these, the animal was killed by flight attendants. b) It is not known how the scorpions came to be on the plane possibly from a passenger s luggage. 5. If anyone is bitten: a) Seek medical attention as soon as possible. b) If you are not sure what the animal is - take a picture of it but only if it is safe to do so. i. This may assist medical professions to identify the most appropriate treatment. 9

1. If you are in a situation where you must handle an animal, make sure that you protect yourself and those around you. 2. Always wear personal protective equipment when handling animals including gloves and a mask. 3. Be sure that you thoroughly clean your hands and any surfaces which the animal(s) may have come into contact with. a) It is important to follow hygiene protocols. 4. Anyone who is bitten/scratched etc. should see medical attention as soon as possible. Images: Flaticon.com : Goggles, man with mask, rubber boots (Freepix), gloves (Eucalyp) 10

Please make sure that these details are fully completed before the training. Add others that are relevant and delete those that are not applicable for your location. 1. These contacts should be able to react quickly! a) There is no point making a report which cannot be acted upon until after the plane has left or the passenger has gone home! 2. Even if action is taken based on your report, you may not hear about it. a) Your information may be used to support existing investigations. b) It is nice to hear that your action has resulted in immediate change but this does not always happen. 3. If your company has specific instructions which should be followed to report wildlife crime these should be included. 4. These are also in the handbook (hold up handbook and show participants where the contacts can be found or should be written, there are also pages in the booklet that can be used to add new contacts) This slide is repeated towards the end of the module (during the question and answer session) to provide another opportunity for participants to record these details. 11

It is important that items which could be used to help investigation and prosecution are protected: 1. Do not let unauthorized personnel remove any item (e.g. baggage tags, documentation etc.) 2. Any photographs should be given to the authorities to assist in their investigation 3. If you are involved in the investigation, make sure that you wear gloves. 4. If you are unsure, seek advice. 12

This app should not be used to report a situation that requires an urgent response. 1. Wildlife Witness App is the first global community action tool in the fight against illegal wildlife trade. a) It was developed by the Taronga Conservation Society in Australia, (Taronga Zoo), in partnership with TRAFFIC. b) It is available in English, Indonesian and Thai and can be downloaded for free on both the iphone or Android. c) You can download anywhere, but at the moment you can only make reports in Southeast Asia and Australia. 2. Its very simple to use, report incidences of wildlife crime by taking a photo, telling us the location and sending the report. a) Wildlife Witness contributes to TRAFFIC s global wildlife crime database which uses expert analysis to link seemingly random instances of wildlife crime to form a big inter-connected picture of trade hubs, routes and groups of criminals that are working together. 13

This app should not be used to report a situation that requires an urgent response. 1. Freeland has developed Wildscan - a smartphone application to help stop wildlife crime which is free for android and Apple devices. a) Wildscan can help you identify endangered species, protect people who encounter wildlife trafficking and quickly and easily report wildlife crime. b) WildScan will be expanded to Africa in 2017 including the addition of 200 species native to the continent, bringing the app's total to more than 700. WildScan can always be used globally to identify and report wildlife crime. c) WildScan has a comprehensive species library with more than 320 animals and products. d) The species library can be browsed and searched. e) WildScan s species ID wizard will help to quickly identify animals. 14

Tip offs do work this one was made by an airport cleaner 1. May 2010, United Kingdom a) Man caught at Birmingham Airport, UK trying to smuggle peregrine falcon eggs to Dubai. b) A cleaner noticed him acting suspiciously in the bathroom area of the Emirates executive lounge. c) He spent a considerable amount of time in the showers, but when the cleaner went in, the cubicle was dry and empty egg boxes were found in the corner. d) The cleaner reported this to the authorities. e) The suspect was searched, officers found 14 Peregrine Falcon eggs tied up in socks and strapped to his body. f) He claimed a physiotherapist had told him that strapping something fragile to his stomach would help his bad back. g) He hid the eggs in his hand luggage, amongst boxes of quail eggs when he passed through security. h) Police found an egg incubator and climbing equipment in his car. i) He admitted taking 14 eggs from a Falcon nest on a cliff. j) 11 of the eggs hatched and the birds were released into the wild. k) The man was sentenced to one year in jail. (notes to be continued on next page) 16

(notes continued from previous page) l) He was a repeat offender a) He was found guilty of taking birds or prey eggs from wild nests i. In Zimbabwe in 1984, ii. iii. In Canada in 2002; and In 2016 he was caught again in Brazil where he was sentenced to four years in jail. Photo from Special note to trainer: Due to copyright reasons, the close up image of the Falcon eggs wrapped in socks cannot be included. You may view this from the following link. 17
