The following talk will be held on Thursday the 26 th of March. SHOW AND TELL CHAIRMAN: All our efforts and resources are currently focussed upon getting the flood of last minute applications worked through. We are pleased to hear that many members licenses and competency certificates started coming through in droves of late. I made it my mission to network with the SAPS WC CFR and as many DPO s as possible to push this. I noticed that where an application was procrastinating, it mostly was caused by the local DPO. If you are wondering if this might be the case, contact the CFR Offices directly and have them check on the system what your application status is. If it has not yet been captured, log a formal complaint substantiated by proof of your submission. I would also like any member who thinks his application AS PRIVATE COLLECTOR has gone astray, to let me have the relevant factual details, dates and reference numbers, and I promise that I will take it up with Sup Visser personally and give you feed back. 1

2 Remember that although license applications for those born during the months Oct/Nov/Dec must be in by 31 st of March 2009, all licenses remain valid till June Those who failed to relicence within the prescribed time frames have until then to sell their firearms, and according to the SAPS it will then be forfeited to the State. I have it on good authority that they intend making an example of those who failed, exactly how remains to be seen. Equally so I am watching and pondering upon the fact that 100 s of thou citizens neglected to relicense. I can hardly see the authorities charging everyone? Perhaps a three month extension in the wings? Regardless of above, the licences of those who neglected to relicence will remain valid until the 31 st of June That will allow them time to sell or swap their firearms. Based on Classic Arms Auction prices, the market has firmed on the better quality firearms so all is not doom and gloom. In this context I remind members that they can advertise any artefacts or firearms for free on our web site, see further down for details. The 2009 membership cards for categorised members will be issued at the next meeting at the Castle, so I invite all of those to duly attend. We would also like to ask those members already categorised and thus issued with membership cards, to wear those to allow new members to get to know them at our monthly talks. Then finally from my side, there probably are still countless owners of firearms out there relatively ignorant about the finality of the FCA who very well could evolve into collectors. In the interest of all, make it your mission to nudge them into membership to obtain categorisation to secure those valuable heirlooms! ADMINISTRATIVE AND MANAGERIAL MATTERS: Membership Committee: All members working on pending applications are requested to submit same A.S.A.P to allow the Mem. Comm. to attend to it well before end March. For all those members or aspiring members who find themselves mired in their attempts to draft their Fields of Interest, we are going to host small workshops to inform and assist them after hours at our Offices in Bellville. Contact the Chairman if you are interested. No need to panic! We will issue a Deferment Certificate to any applicant whose application was received by us, but still under consideration at the end of March, as per agreement with the SAPS CFR. However, those who fell in previous relicense periods who neglected to submit by due dates will have to come up with a good excuse why they did not as the SAPS CFR looks askew at those FIRE ARM RELICENCING: 2

3 Members who have not yet applied to become Categorised Private Collectors are reminded that they must do so before they can apply to have their firearms relicensed. Simply being a member of an accredited association is not enough to keep your firearms. They must prepare a thorough Field of Interest Organogram supported by a written motivation regarding their bona fides as Private Collectors. Once approved, a sworn avadavat certifying above as such along with a membership card are issued to the member which he must include in each SAPS /271 firearm licence application along with R70,00 per collector license application. Refer our web site for SAPS CFR related forms or go directly to; PROFICIANCY TRAINING CENTRES: Next to enquiries on how to become members, this is probably the most called for request. At the end of this newsletter I will paste a list of all the registered service providers as obtained from the SAPS website. Members are reminded to submit information on any related activities and or events to be included on our web site calendar. Invite all those other clubs and associations with complementing interests to post their events for free to promote it as a site where everyone can go to see on one site what s on when. The DEALERS MARKET on our web allows Dealers to offer various items for sale to Collectors. More later, but let it suffice that we have to do everything we can to promote networking at all levels to ensure the big picture survival of all role players to allow us a place in the sun to pursue our interest as private collectors. CAPE SAAACA SHOOTING DISCIPLINES: While we as collectors learn a lot from historical records about our collections, shooting them teaches us what was possible and how they performed. That certainly opens new insights around our interest fields. 3

The shoot on the 7 th of Feb was well attended and great fun was had by all who part took. We are hoping to see more of you at the next shoot! Try either your revolver and old.303 or pistol and any semi auto rifle combo. It s a nice blend of a bit of competition and just plain fun burning cordite, and we get to peek at other collectors scarce and interesting pieces. Whilst we structure our shoots along the Two Gun format, we also accommodate those who simply wish to shoot their pieces for fun. Out shooting details are designed to emulate that for the various firearm types, although we have the enemy s (paper targets) permission to allow a somewhat more relaxed timespan to allow all the old soldiers to get their breath and to get our shaky watery eyes on target. So for those who believe in reincarnation for firearms, I dare you to dust off your old pieces and give them a second wind to show what they did when they were young, bold and in uniform! It also serves as an ideal opportunity to introduce a novice to collecting, possibly your own son or the neighbours? IT S FUN AND IT SMELLS OF CORDITE! 4

5 Minutes of the Castle Talks held 29 th of January 2009: The chairperson gave an illustrated overview of the weapons on display at the recent African Aero & Defence Exhibition (AAD) held at Ysterplaat in September He also gave an illustrated overview of his trip to the United States and spoke about how he experienced the American culture of firearm ownership. What was quite clear from the photographs is the abundance of makes and models available at premier dealers such as Cabelas & Basspro, while at the same time he pointed out that the prices of firearms are not necessarily much cheaper in the USA than in South Africa, as well as the fact that rifles are generally cheaper than handguns. The IO of CTH, Capt Pierre de Villiers, then proceeded to show us a video clip of weapons trials by the Reconnaissance Commandos (Recces) held at De Brug Firing Range near Bloemfontein. He attended the trials and was therefore able to give us this rare insight in the secretive world of the Recces. As the invasion of the Israeli IDF into Gaza was in its last throes, it was only appropriate that he also gave the members present an insight into the scale of destruction brought about by the full might of the Israeli Air Force and land forces on a heavily built-up and densely-populated enclave of approximately 250 km². Although the extent of the massacre of mainly civilians were not clear from the pictures, the intensity and scale of the explosions left no doubt about the all-out nature of the campaign - to be compared with using a 2,5 kg hammer to swat a fly! Pierre also showed and explained the type and nature of the Israeli weaponry, especially the latest variants used in the invasion. The illegal use of phosphorous bombs was also shown and commented on. As it was a "Show and Tell" evening, some members and visitors brought along items that they either would like to discuss and trying to obtain information on. First in line was Paul Browne who brought along a training copy of the standard British Mils No 36 hand-grenade developed during WWI and which was the mainstay of the British Army during WWII and for long afterwards. It was also used by the South African UDF and SADF and many national servicemen practiced nervous baseball throws with these. As it is a training aid, the grenade was neatly dissected and finished off for demonstration purposes. The proper description is the Model 36 Grenade, but was popularly known as the "Mills Bomb", after is its inventor/designer. The original Mills Bombs started life as the No. 5 grenade in It was originally also affixed to a tail rod for firing from a rifle, known as the no. 23 grenade. Both were discarded in 1918 and were subsequently known as the No. 36 grenade. It still could be fired from a rifle, but from a cup that was fitted to the muzzle. For this purpose a steel disc was screwed onto the base, which fitted snugly into the cup, thereby providing a reasonably effective gas check to provide the inertia for the gas pressure to build up to propel the grenade to a greater distance than could be achieved than by merely throwing the grenade. The particular example on display was fitted with the steel gas check, which also makes for a convenient base upon which to display the grenade. The body of the grenade consists of a cast-iron body with cast grooves, producing serrated squares which break up into metal fragments when the charge goes off. A central channel holds, at the top, a striker, retained against the pressure of a spring by a curved lever, which in turn is held securely by a split pin. Beneath the striker is an 'igniter set' comprising a.22 rimfire cartridge, a short length of safety fuse and a detonator. This igniter set is U-shaped so that while the.22 cap enters the central channel, the detonator enters a pocket alongside, and the set can be inserted or removed by grasping the curved section of fuse. Once the set is inserted, the grenade is said to be primed' and a base plug is screwed in place to hold the set in place. The fuse originally burned to give a 7-second delay, this length of time being necessary when launching the grenade from a rifle cup discharger. But in 1940 it was found that the delay was too long for hand throwing and a four-second igniter set was developed and issued. The 4-second set was retained for hand use while the 7second set was available for rifle launching. The 36M was a defensive' pattern grenade, and the fragmentation could be erratic, large pieces often being 5

6 flung up to a hundred yards / 90m or more from the explosion point; consequently it was vital for the thrower to take cover as soon as he/she had got rid of the grenade. Vital statistics: Length 3.75in / 9,5cm; Weight 11b 11¼oz / 0,77kg; Filling 2.5oz / 70,8g Baratol; Fusing 4 or 7-second delay. The next item on display was a combat knife brought along by Marius van der Merwe, and which was identified as Austrian "Feldmesser" or "Field Knife 78", manufactured by the famous firearms maker, Glock. Glock currently manufactures two models of knives. The Field Knife 78 is a classic knife, with a 6.5 inch (165 mm) blade and 11.4 inch (290 mm) overall length. The Survival Knife 81 has the same overall dimensions with an additional saw on the back of the blade. Both knives are phosphate-treated and have a Glock-polymer sheath and are available in olive, tan, and black. Cdr John Lamont was last in line and showed us some of the pocket bibles which he collects, better known as "Active Service Testaments" - they are highly collectable and one of the examples shown actually dates back to the Anglo-Boer War! Brian Coode brought an Anglo Boer War bomb and talked about more advanced electronic fuses that he was involved with as engineer in his career. From an illustration in Ian V. Hogg s Illustrated History of Ammunition, the shell has been identified as a 2.5 calibre, 7 pounder designed for use in the 2.5 RML Mountain Gun. The shell case is of cast iron and the charge cavity is plain and not indented for shrapnel effect as in the illustration. The short (0.5 ) gas check is of bronze with the rifling profile preformed around its rim to facilitate muzzle loading. The front of the charge cavity is taper-threaded to receive a standard British fuse. The shell bears the manufacturer s mark RL (Royal Laboratory). 6

7 Last but not least was our chair, Stephan Fourie, who produced a sorry-looking specimen of a foreign-manufactured assault carbine that was recovered from the sea at Pringle Bay that is due for destruction by the SAPS CFR. It was thoroughly rusted, being exposed to the corrosive effects of prolonged immersion in sea water. As well as being encrusted with marine growth, it was therefore difficult to positively identify the weapon. For all intents and purposes it appears to be a Singapore-manufactured SAR 80 Assault Carbine (no longer in frontline service) with a solid, one-piece polymer butt stock, some wit described it as the new SAN Marine camouflaged rifle. 7
