6 Trail Talk ThankYou by PHILLIP HAYES WinTwo The year 2016 has flashed by too fast, of course leaving me with a number of tasks undone, one being a newsletter to keep our readers abreast of developments in the Magnum arena of interest, as a bonus during the wait for each month s print edition. Now, the Christmas decorations and seasonal music in the shops remind me that I have not achieved all my goals for the year. December is a fruitful month. Apart from allowing us to reflect on 2016, it s time for family, friends, giving, and being thankful for the year gone by. Let me take the opportunity to thank our readers for the support Magnum has enjoyed for the past 40 years. Through the decades we have had a hard-core following of readers that refuse to miss a single edition. To each of you, thank you for your loyal and unwavering support. Without you, our 40th anniversary would not have been possible. During this past year, Magnum has received many letters and phone calls of encouragement and thanks for producing the magazine and, yes, of course, a few letters with complaints. There have also been a few winners of scopes and knives in our monthly competition. This is a small token of our appreciation. We will keep this up until April 2017 as part of our 40th birthday celebration. Also, look out during March and April 2017 for the opportunity to win a 20-year commemorative knife or two. Yes, we still have a few of these knives available, made in 1996, and we will give at least two away, a fixed-blade hunter and the folding knife. They were crafted by Mike Skellern and Fred Burger, numbered, and in pristine and original condition. These knives are true collectables. Another thank you is owed to those who supported us by ordering The Lee-Enfield.303 book. The first print order was sold out before it finally went to the printers, and by now everyone who ordered one should have received it. I hope you re enjoying it and that the holiday season will present you with the time to relax and really sink your teeth into it. We have had enquiries about a reprint and may consider this if the demand merits it. So, if you missed out on the first print, contact our office and get your name on a list. I have occasionally hinted at the possibility of a Magnum book on Mauser rifles; our goal is to produce this during 2017, so perhaps next Christmas it can be a gift from Dad to Dad. To me, even a single day out hunting has always been as good as a holiday. Although it s too hot to hunt at present, now is the time to prepare your kit for the coming season, and to take part in adventures as an armchair hunter: read a good book on hunting and relax with your favourite hunting magazine. 8 Letters Your letters are an important part of Magnum. We (readers and editors) like to hear your problems and opinions. Unless marked NOT FOR PUBLICATION all letters are considered and are edited for length and/or clarity. Pen names may be used, provided that your full name, address and daytime phone number are furnished. Please try to keep your letters short and to the point. Guineafowl Nomenclature I was paging through some of my old Magnums, when I came across an excellent article on guineafowl by Patrys (Magnum, February 2015). Patrys correctly mentions that the word guineafowl probably originated in the fifteenth century, when European explorers imported the birds from the west coast of Africa (vicinity of the Gulf of Guinea) to Europe. The Afrikaans name tarentaal, and the less used poelpetater, have an even more picturesque origin: On 25 December 1497, Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer anchored in the bay of what is today Durban harbour. Because it was Christmas day, he named the surrounding area Terra Natal referring of course to the birth of Christ. In subsequent years, the bay became known as Port Natal, and the surrounding countryside Terra Natal. Later, as Dutch seafarers anchored in Port Natal, and went ashore to replenish supplies, they would hunt or capture guineafowl, and called these birds Terra Natalsche vogelen. This was later shortened to Terra Natal, and then to tarentaal. The much less used name poelpetater or poelpetaan, came from the French poule pintade. Poule being chicken in French, and pintade meaning spots. Spotted chicken then! Willie Barnard, Limpopo Another picturesque name given to this bird by the German settlers of SWA was perelehuhn, meaning pearlfowl a reference to the pearl-like spots on its dark grey feathers. Editor Game Bird Decline A cursory web search indicates a 50% decline in game birds in the Unites States and Europe since Lately, in the Western Cape, we note the occasional wheat farm being almost devoid of birds, when 15 years ago a wheat farm teemed with bird life. I am not sure what causes this, whether fungicide, pesticide, algaecide, glyphosate, tilling, avicide or even El Niño. Perhaps we could incentivise farmers toward bird-friendly farming. A wheat farm with an independent onceoff spring bird count of say 30 birds per 100 hectares could have flour marked A Grade, with a 10% price premium; a farm with 40 birds per 100 hectares could be AA Grade with a 20% price premium, and so on. A farm with more than, say, 40 bird species on it could have a + added to the grade with another 10% premium. Wines can long be tracked from farm to bottle, and the same is possible with wheat. M Anderson, Western Cape Blade-Smith or Stock-Remover? I have been an avid follower of Robin Barkes s writings in Magnum and thoroughly enjoy his stories. Meeting him at Huntex in Jeffreys Bay in May 2016 was, indeed, the highlight of my year. It was an honour and a privilege to read in the October 2016 edition that my little biltong knife accompanied Mr Barkes on his last kudu hunt. Alas, he referred to me as a master bladesmith, which I am not. There are very few certified master blade-smiths in South Africa. Knives are made by either forging a piece of metal into a knife, or by stock removal. A forger oops, I mean a blade-smith heats up a piece of metal until it glows bright red then beats it until it looks like a knife. A stock-remover takes a flat metal bar and grinds off anything that doesn t look like a knife. I am part of the latter group, as my mom taught me not to play with fire. Please could you print the correction as smiths are invariably big, strong, muscled men with lots of big hammers, whom one does not wish to upset. I remember well the first copy my late father brought home way back in For a schoolboy living on a farm, the then-new magazine was a welcome companion to Die Boer en Sy Roer, written in Landbouweekblad by the late Dr Lucas Potgieter. Ever since, Magnum has been a source of considerable joy. As an avid reader of Magnum for all these years, which have passed far too quickly, it is difficult to identify a specific edition that stands out above the others. In a sense, then, each one of the 480 or so copies must have been a masterpiece! There are editions that particularly enriched my life. I can recall the ones published in the early 1980s on a do-it-yourself customisation of the Lee-Enfield No 1 Mk III. A 1921 Lithgow customised as per the instructions provided me with a lifetime of shooting pleasure. Various technical contributors published invaluable advice on reloading for that calibre and enhanced the experience even more. One can reflect on so many excellent writers whose work was published during all these golden years. A few names come to mind: Ian Lehr, Dave Arnold, Gerry Gore... the list could go on and on. With their unique talents, such writers surely helped to add colour and a sense of adventure to many lives. It has been a privilege to be a silent companion on the many hunts relived, to be a quiet participant in the countless calibre controversies, and being a curious spectator to each firearm tested. Also, names come and go. Whatever happened to the Lynx revolver and the Mamba pistol once tested? Where are Roy Swaydins of Johannesburg, Here XVII of Pretoria or Salkinders Gunshop of Kimberley today? All gone, save for the Continued on page 50 8 ManMAGNUM December 2016

So it should come as no surprise to the readers that my favourite pistol and pistol cartridge are both older than I am. In fact, both of them are centenarians who predate my arrival by quite a few decades. The pistol under discussion is none other than John Moses Browning s most famous invention, the United States semi-automatic pistol,.45 calibre model of Developed between 1905 and 1911 at the request of the US Army it went on to become one of the most iconic handguns in the history of firearms.
