6 Trail Talk FeedingYour Firearm by PHILLIP HAYES As avid hunters, our readers may previously have heard the debate on premium grade versus standard grade bullets, but I consider the subject important enough to revisit periodically. Having lived most of my life in a professional hunting environment where hunting was part of daily work, certain things were taken for granted, such as what you fed your hunting rifles. The consensus here was premium grade ammunition, full stop. By premium grade I mean bullets specifically designed to hold together under any hunting conditions, ensuring good penetration. Of course they came at a price. Twenty years ago, when it came to solids, Goodnell was my choice. I bought a case of 500 grainers in.458, but these caused compressed loads in my. 458 Win, so I switched to 475gr. However, their 500gr bullets were the choice for the.458 Lott. The same was true of my.375: if I could not get 300gr solids I opted for 286gr PMPs, and for softs I chose Rhino solid shank 380gr at about 2 050fps. Many other PHs chose Barnes-X bullets as softs and the writings of Gregor Woods in Magnum had a lot to do with that. In fact, there was a debate among PHs as to the suitability of using Barnes-X bullets instead of solids. Being more conservative, I opted for solids as my first line of defence, and Rhino solid shank and Barnes-X ammo when over penetration might be a problem. Then, of course, I used my favourite calibre, the.404 Jeffery, with RWS 400gr solids (V-mantel) and softs (H-mantel) with great success. Both these factory cartridges clocked more than 2 300fps out of my rifle, but they were expensive. As an alternative solid, I used Frontier s Spartan monolithic bullets reloaded for a more sedate 2 100fps. Penetration was remarkable. For my workhorse.308, my go-to ammunition was either reloads with Hornady Interlocks (165gr) at 2 600fps and Barnes TSX, or when I could not get Interlock or TSX bullets, PMP s ProAmm cartridges in 150gr. The Interlocks consistently performed well. I once took a shot at a kudu bull standing downhill from me on a steep slope; the bullet hit the middle of the spine and shattered it. I recovered the bullet intact; it showed excellent performance. The ProAmms did a sterling job as well, I only once had a problem when I pulled a shot and hit a kudu bull on the shoulder bone. The 150gr bullet did not penetrate, but deflected and exited the bull s chest in the front. A follow-up shot in the heart put the bull down. The Barnes bullets performance was simply above reproach. Now that I am no longer involved in full-time professional hunting I get a lot more time to mingle with biltong hunters and I was surprised to realise the high popularity of PMP s standard ammunition (in the brown box). Personally, I have never considered this ammunition as useful for anything but shooting-range exercises, but it seems I might have been wrong. Several gun shop owners have told me that the bulk of their ammunition sales consist of the brown box PMP cartridges; one said these constitute at least 60% of his ammo sales. That s a lot of PMP ammunition. I suppose this should not come as a surprise, as the cheapest.308 ammunition locally available is PMP s 143gr FJBT at R255 per 20. Their 150gr softs sell for R295 per 20, 168gr softs for R270 and 180gr softs for R280. Pro-Amm in 150gr costs R360 (on special) and 180gr, R400 per 20. PMP brass (.308) will set you back R395 for 50 cases. (I used Safari & Outdoor s online prices.) Compared with PMP, Norma s 165gr Oryx ammunition will cost you R760 per 20, and Nosler 150gr Trophy Grade Accubond R1 050 per 20, or my choice, Barnes 168gr TSX cartridges at R1170 per pack of 20. When comparing the prices of PMP with imported ammunition, especially with a true premium grade bullet like the Barnes TSX, the locally produced product certainly looks like a bargain and I can understand why it is popular, especially as it seems that shooters and hunters are spending quite a lot of time on the range these days. Theoretically, this means I can buy 4.33 packs of PMP 168 grainers for the price of one pack of Barnes 168gr TSX that s a choice between 86 PMP cartridges or 20 TSXs! This would likely make anyone think twice. As I have avoided standard ammunition for hunting all my life, I would probably opt for the TSXs, but I might need to rethink my approach. If I buy the 86 PMP cartridges and use them all on the range I am left with 86 cases for reloading; and then reloading 20 cases with Barnes TSX bullets well, you get the picture. However, quite a number of hunters I meet are happy with the standard PMP ammunition s performance apart from the price. Generally, the standardgrade bullets will perform well enough in calibres with lower velocities, but in.300 Win Mag territory for example, will I not encounter bullet disintegration or jacket-core separation due to fragile bullet construction? In my opinion, paying that bit extra to buy ProAmm instead of standard ammo is the way to go, as the difference in the 150gr.308 bullet is only R70 per box. Use the standard ammo for range work and the ProAmm for hunting the caveat being that ProAmm are available only in 150gr and 180gr in this calibre. I intend to properly test the standard (brown box) ammunition in the near future, but in the meantime I encourage readers who hunt regularly with this ammo to share their experiences with us (please bear in mind, opinions should be based on numerous bullet performance examples in game, not once-off wonders). This will help me to produce a more objective and informative article. 8 Letters Buffalo Oxen and Mzee Ayre Being a long-time subscriber who always reads the magazine from cover to cover with great enthusiasm, I find it pertinent to comment on two stories. Firstly, Buffalo Oxen : great reading on abnormal buffalo and the hypothesis they may, in fact, be oxen, likely brought about by scrotum damage at an early stage. From 1986 to 1995 we lived in Tanzania a fantastic place made even greater by the people and, at that time, the shortage of commodities. We spent a lot of time touring, hunting and fishing, and Lake Manyara National Park was a favourite place. It held incredible birdlife and some of the biggest leopards I ve ever seen not easy to spot, but we got good at it over time. In the more open areas of Manyara and towards Tarangiri National Park there were good numbers of hyena often in fair sized packs. Around 1990, we visited Lake Manyara for the umpteenth time and I spotted a freak horned buffalo to the south of the main body of water, likely to have a 50" spread and it had all the features described in Gregor Woods s article. Unfortunately, I do not have a picture. It was in a group of about 25 buffalo at around 150m and was easily recognised due to the width and drop configuration. At the time, I thought it a bull and a lifetime trophy to behold. Secondly Mzee Ayre: what a story and when Mtwapa Creek and George Webb showed up on page 28 it brought back memories. I fished in the same area with the Hempels back in the early 1990s, good fun and some excellent fishing. I met George Webb and his dear wife on a couple of occasions as we were good friends with his son, Rob and his wife Sonia, who at that time lived in Dar Es Salaam, close to us. Years later, when we moved to Denmark, I bought a 9.3x62, made by the well-known Berlin gunsmith, D Geyr, from the Webb family. It had been their farm rifle in Kenya, and had accounted for many a problem animal as well as rations for the family and staff. When Kenya changed and private ownership of firearms became illegal, the Webb family transferred their firearms to an armoury in the UK where they remained for years. Changes in the law in the UK made the ownership of large-bore rifles almost impossible, and the marked increase of storage costs forced them to put this rifle up for sale. I bought it, had it shipped to Denmark and refurbished by a good gunsmith. I kept all the old features, but put an EAW scope mount on it and a small fixed-power scope to retain its good lines and profile. It shoots like a dream with.275 grain RWS ammunition and is my preferred rifle for driven game as it shoulders like a shotgun. In 1998, I hunted sable and eland with it in Zimbabwe. A Facebook comment to Rob Webb regarding this particular rifle some three years ago solicited a reply from a Brian Webb, cousin of Rob. Brian is a proud South African resident and hunter; he recalled the rifle and the time spent in Kenya with George Webb. We swapped stories and became acquainted. When I get to hunt in SA again, and if I can bring the 9.3x62 for the hunt, the plan is to donate it back to the family, provided Brian can get the permit. It would be nice to see this iconic rifle go full circle. Jan Korsgaard, Denmark No Magic Bullet I refer to the article by Neil Harmse (Magnum, May 2017) regarding the.375h&h in which he castigates the.375h&h in no uncertain terms. May I just say is that there is no magic bullet or magic calibre! The only magic comes from shot placement! Neil seems to have a great many experiences as a PH and has owned a variety of rifle calibres but to make these assumptions regarding the ever great.375h&h is unnecessary and unfair. I am a very average hunter over the past 35 years, not being able to afford the safari type hunts, however I have realised my dream and shot my Buffalo in Zimbabwe in This was a one shot kill at 110 metres in open recently burnt grassland admitted, but still I did exactly what my African PH told me and put the 300gr Rhino bullet straight through the heart. Similarly I have used the.270 Winchester exclusively and shot everything from springbuck to eland with it and cannot remember when last I needed a second shot, except when I took a shot at a springbuck at more than 450m and needed a second shot at closer to 500m to bring it down. Andrew Smith, Western Cape We feel your statement that Neil Harmse s article castigates the.375h&h in no uncertain terms is perhaps rather too strongly put. Harmse stated that the.375 is a good allrounder for the general bag hunter who occasionally pursues elephant and buffalo. Your letter seems to indicate that you fall into that category. When you finally got to hunt your buffalo, you shot it from 110 metres in open terrain. That s a long shot for a buffalo; you were in no danger from it, and you could take your time in placing your shot perfectly. However, Harmse goes on to say, The PH, however, who regularly deals with large dangerous game, is better served by a bigger, heavier bullet. The article makes it clear that Harmse falls into this category.
