Thanks to everyone who supports our association in any way. Our turnout in members and vendors last year shows just how much support we have! We ve had a great start on planning our upcoming raffle, spring workshop and annual convention. We will raffle a shotgun, fly rod with reel and a spotting scope with binoculars. Our March workshop will be casting with Matt Marulli and our judges next June are John Matthews, Carolin Brak-Dolny and Brian Noody. We made a few small changes to our rules: Youth now goes up to age 17 and a competitor needs to move from the Master s division to DOE after 3 blue ribbons or 2 blue and a BOC in that category. Fish and reptile have been separated for the New England Champion award. Unfortunately, we have had to raise a few prices to keep up with the rising hotel costs. These changes will be on the registration form. Please note that next year s show is very early. It is still the first weekend in June, but the show starts on Friday, which is May 31 st. ALL banquet orders must be in by May 24 th or a dinner will not be guaranteed. That s all for now, thanks again for making my and Butch s jobs worthwhile. Thanks, Cathy Gearwar President Vice President s Message Hi to all, Another successful year of NEAT has come to an end. I want to thank everyone from Cathy, the board, judges, seminarians, vendors and all the members that made this year s show a successful one. We had many great mounts both small and large. The seminars hopefully helped you to improve your work and maybe gave you some short cuts to make your work go a little faster. The show is meant to be a learning place as well as a place to network and make new friends and get together with old ones. We finally accomplished buying a newer better trailer for storing the backboards and show supplies. This was done mostly through the mounting stand raffles. Thanks to Steve Mudgett for keeping the trailer at his house and maintaining it. We have been able to obtain sponsorship from Whitetail Unlimited which has promoted an award for the professional division whitetail and to help educate taxidermists and our industry. I would encourage everyone who has a WTU camp near you to go and support them. It is a fun night of food and raffles. Again thank you all and best wishes for a successful hunting season and business. 2 Happy Fall to all members and friends of NEAT, I want to join Cathy and Butch in thanking you all for a successful year between the workshop and the show. We were able to meet expenses that occurred during the year and to pay for the actual show expenses. 15 HANDS ON CARCASS CASTING WORKSHOP WITH MATT MARULLI Matt Marulli has been doing taxidermy for 22 years and lives in Fredericksburg, VA. He has been competing for most of that time and some of his achievements include, NTA Award of Excellence, 2 WASCO awards, 2 UTA Artisan Awards, 5 Breakthrough awards and 3 rd place Masters at the Worlds. As well as many First place, best of category, best of show and people s choice awards. All of the major awards Matt has won came from competing with small mammals, all of which were done using a carcass casting method. Saturday, March 16, 2019 Bring a small carcass (fox or smaller) frozen in desired position. We will let you know what materials will be needed and what will be provided. Other casting techniques pertaining to small mammals will also be covered. The cost will be $200 per person and the class is limited to 15 people. Lunch will be provided, and membership is included. The class will run from 8:30 am to 4pm. A block of rooms for Friday and Saturday night at a reduced rate of $104 per night has been set aside for those who need to stay. Must book room by 2/25/2019 to guarantee rate. The hunt was primarily focused on Cape buffalo which I was able to get on the 2nd day in miles and miles of tall grass. We were withing about 15 yards of buffalo the first day, but the grass was too tall and thick to make out any of them. The rest of the trip was spent just looking for trophy quality animals that may present a possibility of a stalk, of which many did fail. However enough of the stalks did work out, and my son and I were able to fill out tags on blue wilderbeast, kudu, gemsbok, waterbuck, springbuck, and impala. It was an incredible adventure which started in the Caprivi Strip, then we went to two other camps working our way west across the whole country of Namibia. It was a great adventure for us both.
