2005 Issues to Overcome Fragmented community Lack of trust (between orgs & agency) Lack of coordinated agenda (small issues driving wedges) Reactive not proactive No consistent attention paid to organizing the community
Mid-Term Success Creation of Conservation Coalition SIX (6) years and counting of trust building & active listening Agenda creation Agenda IMPLEMENTATION (SHARED CREDIT) Volunteer bill, Hunter Heritage bill, Scientific Wildlife management bills, DNR License fee package (ALL signed, by the Governor between ). Coalition input into DNR planning Feeling of power and engagement, looking to MUCC for leadership

2013 Moving Forward Identifying barriers to increasing success Capacity building for individual orgs Working to build strong, permanent grassroots networks in all legislative districts Building trust and relationships outside of the sportsman s community More aggressive agenda (General Fund) Exploring new sources of fund raising now that successes and direction is defined
Lessons Learned Capacity building requires a long-term organizational commitment to trust building, relationship building, communication, strong organizational skills and humble leadership. Don t expect to successfully launch a campaign that demonstrates results if you haven t done the time-consuming work.

Advocating for Deer Importation Ban Due to Chronic Wasting Disease Threat Manley Fuller President, Florida Wildlife Federation
Source:
Summer 2013 Letter from Florida Wildlife Federation to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission The Florida Wildlife Federation, on behalf of our Board of Directors and thousands of members across the state, reiterate our call for closing the state borders to the importation of deer and other members of the family Cervidae at the earliest possible date. White-tailed deer are arguably our most popular game animal, provide the major prey for the endangered Florida panther, and in the middle Keys are represented by the endangered Key Deer. The reason we want to close the borders is we want to do everything possible to keep the devastating chronic wasting disease (CWD) out of our state, and importation of deer is a known vector of CWD. Unfortunately, chronic wasting disease is on the rise and spreading. Note that we called for the border closure in October 2012, and nothing has occurred since to give us comfort that anything short of total closure should occur. Respectfully Yours, Manley Fuller, FWF President
Chronic Wasting Disease: People say you can t absolutely prevent the spread here, that s true, but you can reduce the probability of it, said Florida Wildlife Federation President Manley Fuller.
Backers of the ban include not only the NRA but the Florida Wildlife Federation, United Sportsmen of Florida, Florida Deer Association, Florida Zoo Association and the Humane Society.
September 6, 2013 The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) passes a rule prohibiting the importation of live cervids (deer, elk and moose) into Florida from out-of-state sources. To implement the decision immediately, the FWC issues an executive order (right) prohibiting importation of cervids. The commission directs the FWC executive director to create a working group to develop other measures to safeguard the state from CWD.
