2 Purpose of Field Manual The purpose of this field manual is to provide an up-to-date guide and a more thorough understanding of Safari Club International and Safari Club International Foundation, along with guidelines, suggestions and tools intended to help chapters, members, staff and volunteers fulfill the SCI/SCI Foundation missions. It provides you with information designed to allow you to more effectively and efficiently interface with all of the components of Safari Club International. Various application forms and other materials are provided for use at the end of each section and in the addendum of this manual. Simply copy any forms you need and maintain the original with this manual. SCI and SCI Foundation Bylaws are included in this manual. This manual is also published online at

3 SCI Hunter s Code of Ethics Recognizing my responsibilities to wildlife, habitat and future generations, I pledge: A. To conduct myself in the field so as to make a positive contribution to wildlife and ecosystems. B. To improve my skills as a woodsman and marksman to ensure humane harvesting of wildlife. C. To comply with all game laws, in the spirit of fair chase, and to influence my companions accordingly. D. To accept my responsibility to provide all possible assistance to game law enforcement officers. E. To waste no opportunity to teach young people the full meaning of this code of ethics. F. To reflect in word and behavior only credit upon the fraternity of sportsmen, and to demonstrate abiding respect for game, habitat and property where I am privileged to hunt. SCI S Mission and Purposes The mission of SCI is to protect the freedom to hunt and to promote wildlife conservation worldwide. A. Protect Rights of Hunters. To advocate, preserve and protect the rights of all hunters; B. Promote Hunting. To promote safe, legal and ethical hunting and related activities; C. Engage in Advocacy. Within the limits imposed by law and regulation, to monitor, support, educate or otherwise take positions on local, national and international legislative, executive, judicial or organizational endeavors that foster and support these purposes and objectives; D. Educate Public Regarding Hunting. To inform and educate the public concerning hunting and related activities; E. Other Purposes. To conduct those purposes set forth in SCI s Articles of Incorporation

5 Chapter Network Professionally staffed Field Operations Department dedicated to helping each Chapter maximize their efforts. More than 200 local events held annually, including 13 special alternative hunting methods chapters. Marketing & Communications Sells and fulfills corporate sponsorships. Develops, promotes and coordinates communications programs at the Headquarters and Chapter levels to foster understanding of and support for the organizations missions. Sells and manages licensees. Produces Expedition Safari TV on Outdoor Channel. Produces videos and other mass communication pieces Manages SCI media buying and negotiations. Advises and assists all other departments with marketing needs. Annual Hunters Convention SCI returns to Las Vegas for the 42 nd Annual Hunters Convention Feb. 5 8, Important seminars and member meetings. The Annual Convention returns 1 million square feet of exhibits at the Mandalay Bay. 970 exhibits and 24,000 fellow hunters. Nearly $12 million raised in four days to support our mission. Record Book and World Hunting Awards Tracks the Hunting Heritage of Safari Club International by managing the 150,000 - plus record book entries submitted by SCI members. Coordinates all efforts to increase the awareness of the SCI Official Scoring System. SCI is the only internationally recognized scoring system measuring all big game species, free range and estate, and with all ethical methods of take. Tracks SCI members Record Book entries and applies them to the World Hunting Awards Program. Manages SCI Record Books of Big Game Animals, including maps, taxonomic notes, and species distributions. Hunting Advocacy Governmental Affairs Department staffed by specialists on federal, state and international affairs who represent SCI in Washington, DC. Hunter Advocacy Litigation Section staffed by experts in hunting and wildlife law and litigation. Nearly $2 million spent annually on local, state, national and international efforts. The hunter s voice both domestically and internationally.

6 Canadian Operations SCI-Canada is working to build a presence and an identity in Canada that will enhance SCI s ability to carry out its mission there and to increase SCI membership, develop chapters and consequent sources of revenues available to SCI in Canada. Works with all levels of government, governmental and non-governmental agencies and in partnership with other conservation and hunter organizations, to advance our mission in Canada. SCI Foundation Programs National & International Fundraising Conservation Education Sables Programs and International Wildlife Museum Humanitarian Services National & International Fundraising Builds a permanent endowment for SCI Foundation. Identifies and implements ways to provide ongoing financial support for SCI Foundation s mission programs Raises charitable gifts through individuals, foundations and corporations. Recognizes donors through communications, publications and Annual Report. Science-Based Conservation Programs and Research Since 2002, the Science-Based Conservation Programs and Research Department has provided $7 million to wildlife conservation programs worldwide. In North America, primary conservation funding is focused on researching predator-prey dynamics and determining management strategies based on scientific findings. Internationally, the SCI Foundation invests hundreds of thousands of dollars into wildlife research and capacity-building in governments. 1. The largest of the SCI Foundation s projects is the African Wildlife Consultative Forum, which provides the only dedicated meeting in Africa to exclusively strategize on sustainable wildlife management, conservation, rural development and hunting priorities. 2. In several regions of Asia, the SCI Foundation is working with governments to conduct population surveys on game species. Research will provide much needed baseline data and help maintain sustainable harvest limits. SCI Foundation actively participates on multilateral treaties and organizations, such as CITES, CBD and IUCN, to ensure international wildlife management and policy decisions are science-based and practice the principles of sustainable-use.

7 Education Sables American Wilderness Leadership School since being established 5,484 participants now educate 5 million students annually. One program 2 sites Sables and SCI Foundation Scholarship programs assist selected students each year that study wildlife management and related fields of study. Chapter Youth Programs a program that provides money to chapters to develop programs that introduce youth to shooting sports and hunting. Chapters must apply for the money. Becoming An Outdoors Woman SCI Foundation has offered comprehensive outdoor programs for women at AWLS Granite Creek Ranch. Hands on Wildlife is a K-12 educational resource kit that educators can use to introduce youth to important concepts of habitat, wildlife management and impacts resulting from human and wildlife interactions. International Wildlife Museum Over 400 species of animals from around the globe many in dioramas depicting their natural settings Dedicated to increasing knowledge and appreciation of the diverse wildlife of the world, as well as explaining the role of wildlife management in conservation More than 55,000 visit SCI s world-class natural history museum annually Humanitarian Services Sportsmen Against Hunger Millions of meals worth of low-fat, low cholesterol, preservative-free, high-protein meat are distributed annually to individuals and relief organizations in need. Sensory Safari A unique opportunity for the visually impaired to see wildlife through a variety of touchable displays of animals, fish, bird mounts, skins, skulls and horns. SafariCare/SafariWish SafariCare is a volunteer healthcare and humanitarian outreach program serving people in need in remote communities around the globe. At both the national and international levels, SafariWish makes hunting wishes a reality for those with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. Disabled Hunter/Pathfinder Award Disabled Hunters and shooters across the country benefit from the generous gifts of time, goods and services provided by SCI members. Each year, SCI Foundation sponsors and coordinates world-class hunting safaris for the recipients of the annual Pathfinder Award.
