2 RR & GC MARCH NEWSLETTER Roseburg Rod & Gun Club 875 Old Del Rio Road Roseburg Oregon CLUB UPDATE Earl Skonberg Gun & Knife Show Our recent gun & knife show was another success with over 2800 individual tickets sold for the 2-day event including day passes. A special thanks to Lester Fanning for organizing all the volunteers, Phil Hardison, with the help of Inmates, placing signs around town, and of course, Del Applegarth for coordinating the entire event. Another great job! Our next show is September 19 & 20, ODFW Grant The matching grant from ODFW finally came through. These matching funds will now allow us to go forward with work on Bay 6 (Outdoor Pistol Range) adding additional sand and gravel, the berms and other planned improvements. We will eventually start thinking about a shooting platform and range layout. Thanks to Kerry Boak for his dedicated efforts bird-dogging this project. New Equipment The club recently acquired a Log Splitter to help manage the trees that seem to keep falling down from wind and rain. In past years, we have either borrowed or rented one on an as needed basis. With the Douglas County Inmate Program, we now have inmates coming almost every Monday to help with club projects and will put the new log splitter to use very soon. A Pressure Washer was also purchased to help maintain our equipment and for cleaning walkways, range pads, and exterior of some buildings. In other words, we plan to start sprucing up the place a little at a time. Club Entrance Road I would like to remind members to try and keep your driving speeds within the posted speed limits. I know it s tough to drive 10 miles per hour on a paved road, but I personally observe drivers causing unnecessary damage to the road and potholes through their speed. We can only fill the potholes so many times before we will have to start thinking about re-paving the entire road. Please slow down! DEFENSIVE PISTOL Jeff Willeke The Roseburg Defensive Pistol program is looking forward to the start-up of our 2015 season. The first shoot is scheduled for Saturday, April 4. In keeping with our format, we will have five stages to shoot. One stage will be a skills drill set and typically, one month there will be a stage that can be shot with either a shotgun or pistol and then the next month a stage will be set-up to be shot with either a carbine or pistol. This April, we will start the sequence with a shotgun stage. The fee for shooters 18 years old and older is $10 (cash only, please). Youths under the age of 18 will shoot for free. Youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Please note: Signup is between 8:00 A.M. and 8:30 A.M. The Safety Briefing will be at 8:45 A.M. All shooters are required to attend the Safety Briefing. Shooting will start at 9:00 A.M. More information about Roseburg Defensive Pistol, including a printable signup form, fees, safety and equipment requirements can be found at our website: Roseburg Defensive Pistol is a community service program. Its intent is to provide members of the community a venue to practice, maintain, and improve skills with their personal defense firearms without pressure or competition in a safe, supervised environment. The program is available the first Saturday of each month from April through October. Hope to see you in April.
3 BOWKER S GUN SHOP Jake O Dowd While at the range the other day I asked a fellow club member, Have you been to Bowker s Gun Shop? Who, what, they responded. Bowker s Gun Shop, I repeated. Where is it located? they asked with an inquisitive expression on their face. Then I explain that it is on Old 99 just south of North Bank Road in Wilbur. Robert Bowker, the owner I continued, is a gunsmith with over 28 years of experience. If you need a firearm repaired or looked at he s the one to go to. I ll have to check him out, the club member said in a tone telling me he will and soon. You won t be disappointed, I continued, he is well versed in all makes and models of firearms and he warranties all his work. Why just recently I met a fellow who said that Robert actually milled a new firing pin for his shotgun. Let me introduce Robert Bowker. I recently interviewed Robert to learn about his background and business. Although Robert opened the doors of his shop in Wilbur at 7985 Old Highway 99N, as Bowker s Gun Shop/Gunsmithing and Accessories in 2012, he started working in the gunsmith business in 1987 working with Bob Williams of Bob Williams Gun Shop in Ontario, Oregon. But more interesting is that he actually began disassembling, cleaning and assembling a wide variety of firearms, from sporting shotguns and rifles to all forms of foreign and U.S. military light arm, at the age of twelve, at a friend of the families firearm business. I just had an innate knack for guns, Bowker says, I could look at the mechanism and understand how it s operated. Robert s background in gunsmith training and schooling spans many years at a variety of shops and schools. He studied under Bob Williams (Bob s Gun Shop) and Tom McAdow of McAdow Machine Shop and Bear Mtn. Guns in Idaho, and received specialized training from various other trades including machine work and woodworking. Through a four-year apprenticeship at a machine shop he gained valuable knowledge in metal work and milling. He has three degrees from Lassen College Extension Gunsmith School for shotgun, rifle and pistol; and three certificates from the American Gunsmith Institute. At other colleges throughout the Northwest he has taken courses in Mechanical Engineering and obtained certificates for oxy/acetylene, arc and tig welding. When asked about his most unusual repair request, Robert answered, A gentleman from Pennsylvania telephoned and asked if I could make a screw for a very rare antique German drilling that he owned, Robert said. It seems that he could not find anyone who could or would try to make it for him. I told him I could and that is where this request became unusual, Robert continued. He requested that I insure the gun, while in my possession, for $60K; I could only have the gun two days and; his courier would take possession of the gun after hours, Robert explained. Well, the courier arrived at my shop one morning after I had acquired and provided proof of insurance for his firearm. Examining the firearm I realized why no one else wanted to attempt the repair. The screw he needed was 3/8 of an inch in length with a 1/4 inch head and unusual threads not conforming to any standard metric or American thread size. Also the screw s head needed to be angled and radiused to conform to the firearm s surface. In addition, the customer required the patina and intricate engraving on the screw s head had to match the rest of the firearm. It took me the two days to make the screw and hand the firearm over to the courier. A few weeks later I received a call from the customer telling me that he had to look at the pre-repair picture to tell which screw I had made. The customer then informed me that without the screw I had made the firearm was worth $20K, his purchase price; but once complete, with an authentic reproduction screw, he had sold the firearm for 60K. So, if you need a gun repaired, appraised or have a small machine project, stop in and introduce yourself to Robert and his wife Tawnee. Although Bowker s Gun Shop is a full line gun shop, Robert s primary focus is gunsmithing, providing services for individuals and many gun shops in the northwest. Robert says his business ethic is To do my best to give my customers quality work at a reasonable price. What more could a customer ask for? *This article is written as information only and is not a promotion or endorsement by the Roseburg Rod and Gun Club.
