2 Volume 44, Issue 2 Page 2 Morgan s Meanderings By Terry C. Morgan Blue Grass Sportsmen s League is a special place. I don t believe there is another place like I t in the state of Kentucky or even in the surrounding area of this state. What makes this place unique, you ask? Well, there are lots of other pistol and rifle ranges and several Trap ranges as well as many Sporting Clays courses to be found. If you add to the mix archery, muzzle loading, air gun, casting, hiking trails, horseback riding trails, fishing, upland bird activities, gun dog training, camping, conservation programs, turkey, deer and small game activities, strong youth programs, a variety of training programs for beginners as well as advanced, Women on Target support, Boy Scout and 4-H support and many other activities as they present themselves, it is no wonder that I call it unique. Where else can you find all of that in one location. Not only is BGSL a unique place, it is a plain old flabbergast. One of the characteristics of BGSL that contributes to it s special qualities is the fact that practically everything that you participate in is set up and run by volunteers. This remark is not meant to demean the work and efforts put in by our small staff of paid workers. It would be very difficult to get anything done around here without these staff people contributing to our success. However, the preponderance of activities that you see and take part in are made possible by volunteer effort. Let s take a look at one area where these volunteers make a great deal of difference in our daily enjoyment of the League. The General Purpose Range is, without a doubt, the area put to the greatest use by our club members. This range is hardly recognizable today by many of us. Not too many years ago it was basically a firing line, a berm and some areas to post targets at various distances. Today, it has become a totally baffled (enclosed) area for single projectile guns that can handle raw beginners as well as highly advanced shooters in distances from 7 yards to 100 yards. Due to several safety concerns and the fact that the GP range is the most heavily used area by the largest percentage of our membership, a very large amount of money has been spent to make this range useful to literally every one of our members who wants to shoot a gun and at the same time made it one of the safest areas of our club. Due to the overwhelming need to make this area as safe as possible our various committees that had input into the setup and control of our ranges felt that we could not go forward in the community without providing better control of safety on our single projectile ranges; henceforth there shall be Range Safety Officers present when shooting takes place. Well, long story short, we started out slowly, but now have the GP Range open seven days a week and from seven to ten hours a day. Guess

3 Morgan s Meanderings By Terry C. Morgan (cont.) Volume 44, Issue 2 what that would cost us if we had to pay a full time staff to make those hours available using paid staff? Page 3 In order to build up a staff of volunteers BGSL started offering training classes for Range Safety Officers and paid the fees involved in return for a commitment of a minimum of 10 hours of work on the range by each attendee. Through these classes, we have accumulated a pool of members numbering approximately 70 or so upon whom we can call for duty. We are currently fortunate to have a full time paid Range Master, Matt Jewell, who oversees the work schedules of the volunteer Range Officer Staff. Chuck Hedges, Mike Johnson and Steve Sanson are three of our volunteers that you will see most often at the range since they put in the bulk of the time that the ranges are open and are compensated on a part time basis for doing so. There are several others that volunteer on a regular basis and their hours worked go towards their annual dues. I am reluctant to try to name them because I know I will miss someone and I would feel badly about that. Suffice it to say that we could not get along without the services of these volunteers. Matt has stated that according to his math the volunteers save the club approximately $10 to $12 thousand dollars per year. A lot of the old guard would probably comment that they see no need for these orange hatted pests. I will admit to a certain reluctance on my own part when we first started this program. I have had the opportunity to see first hand the underlying reasons and evidence as to why the decisions were made to require the presence of Range Safety Officers. Let me tell you right here and now; they are absolutely necessary to the continued safe operation of our club for several reasons. It must be admitted that they cannot guarantee that there will never be an accidental round fired on a range, but they contribute a great influence in the overall safety of operation and reduce the potential that one of those accidental firings will become dangerous. Every day that goes by some potential safety violation is thwarted by our officers. On behalf of the range officers Matt would like to leave you members with the following safety procedure thoughts: If you bring your gun to the GP range in a case of some kind, please remember to uncase your gun on the firing line with the muzzle pointed down range. Do not remove guns

4 Morgan s Meanderings By Terry C. Morgan (cont.) Volume 44, Issue 2 Page 4 from cases that have been placed on the back workbench because it is impossible to remove a gun from a case on the back workbench without it being pointed at someone or somewhere that it should not be pointed (falls under muzzle control ). When moving a gun that has been made safe (magazines removed and ECI inserted) from the firing line to the safety of a rack or pegboard, please keep the muzzle pointed in an upward vertical direction. If you forget a rule or procedure or have a question of any kind, please ask a Range Safety Officer for information. They are there to help and remind so that everyone can have fun but have it safely. In case you have not been to the range lately, you will find that they are now offering some targets for sale. They have some Shoot-N-C targets and some orange spot targets. They vary in price from 50 cents to $2.00 each. They are also offering reloadable brass in most any pistol caliber for $20 per 1000 or $3 per 100. This is brass that has been salvaged from the firing line and has not been cleaned. Come out and meet the guys (and if you happen to have a few plaudits in your gun bag or in your back pocket, pass them around). Read the posted rules. Get into the swing of things. Have fun. Be Happy. I think that last phrase comes from the Singing Trout Song. (Did you have one of those?) P.S. My pharmacist mentioned to me the other day that he was a member of the club and how much he appreciated what we had at BGSL. He commented that he had taken a couple of guests to a range in Georgia or Alabama ( I can t remember which) last week and they had to wait in line for 45 minutes to obtain a shooting space. Now wouldn t that gall some of our members. Whoooooeeeeehog.

5 Morgan s Meanderings By Terry C. Morgan Big Do ins are going on at BGSL and I don t mean maybe! Now, I know that a lot of you people are not shotgun officiandos (that is Spanish for I really know what I am doing ) but I know you have been lusting in your heart to learn how to shoot one ( lusting in your heart is an acceptable political expression and is quite acceptable in our publication). Well, now is your chance because we are bending over backwards to try to lure you closet shotgunners out into the open and make it simple for you to put down that handgun, rifle, stink loader, B-B gun or bow and wrap your hand around the smooth varnish of a lovable double barrel or reciprocating mechanism shotgun and fall in love with a new and different way to have more fun than you were meant to have in this life. (Bass fishermen need not apply). Getting people to overcome that intimidation factor that seems to be so present in shooting sports is a tough procedure but once you get past that niggling worry, you suddenly realize that it was not so bad after all. I remember my first day at the Sporting Clays venue. Bert Horine and some others invited me to join in their squad and my mouth went dry and I was so nervous I thought I would pass out. Through their encouragement I managed to break at least one bird but I was fortunate to be with a group of people who made it clear that this was pretty much the learning curve that everyone had to follow in learning this game and did not give up on it. I like to test my skill shooting a pistol or rifle and seeing how accurately I can place multiple shots into one hole, but I love to shoot moving targets and the variety available is found only in shot gun shooting. Back to the do ins. BGSL has decided to take a step forward in trying to make your club more usable and fun filled. Recognizing the above stated problems with getting folks involved with something new, the shot gun venues have hired a new manager. His name is Randolph (Randy) Ross. Randy is a Five Time winner of the ATA (Amateur Trapshooting Assn) All American award and has been shooting and teaching for many years. Randy is 40 years old and originally hailed from Owensville, Ohio but he and his wife, Nora Martin Ross have been living on their farm near Carlisle, KY for over 6 years. They have currently moved into the White House on BGSL property in order to be closer to the job and to git er done. Randy s wife and helpmate, Nora, is going to assist Randy in his endeavor and will start out putting most of her efforts into rebuilding the Trap Division membership and offering beginning instruction to new shot gun shooters to get them over the hump. It must be noted here that Nora is a Champion in her own right. She holds title to 31 ATA All American championships (that is not a misprint) and has been a professional instructor since Nora grew up in Paris, Kentucky and many of you may remember her family from that area. Nora has instructed folks of all ages and abilities and prides herself on being able to make people feel comfortable in learning how to handle a shotgun. If they can pick up and handle a shotgun, she will make it her business to give them assistance. This looks to me like a wonderful opportunity for all those women who have had trouble getting up the nerve to engage in this great sport to affiliate with Nora and find a compatible relationship which will help them get going. It s kinda like trying to get your husband to teach you to drive. Whoa!! That doesn t work so well. Nora started out her shooting experiences with her Dad who was a member of BGSL when it was located on Richmond Road. It sort of like coming home again states Nora. As you can maybe tell from the picture below, Randy is great big and Nora is teeny, tiny. Hey, if that little girl can shoot a big old 12 gauge and bust 100 doubles I find it hard to believe that other folks cannot learn to handle a shot gun. Current operating hours at Trap are going to be: Wed, 1 p.m. until dusk Thur 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Fri Sat Volume 44, Issue 2 1 p.m. until dusk 10 a.m. until dusk Sun 10 a.m. until dusk Page 5 These hours will be in place until further notice. Here is the best opportunity you are going to find anywhere to get involved in the fun world of shot gun shooting. With regular operating hours and someone in attendance during those hours you have a marvelous opportunity to gain access, learn the routines and even get some free instruction from a world champion shooter, all for the price of your regular membership. Bruce is still operating the Skeet and Sporting Clays venue under Randy s supervision and both of them invite you to get with it.
