NELSON DISTRICT ROD & GUN CLUB Mailing Address: PO Box 16, Nelson, BC V1L 5P7 Indoor Range & Clubhouse: 801 Railway St, Nelson BC Outdoor Range: 124 Porto Rico Rd (off of Hwy 6), Nelson BC Website: Newsletter June 2018 NEWS: Range Clean Up A Big Success Howie Grant A hardy thank you to this hard working group of volunteers who did a commendable job cleaning up the outdoor range on Saturday May 5. A special thank you to Glen McKen for his cooking talents. In the picture in no particular order: Ernie Gilfillan, Glen McKen, Greg Bohn, Richard Green, Darcy Lutz, Josh Milligan, Mike Leavens, Brian Beaudoin, Jim Brown, Don Pedersen, Bill Wade, Marvin Paisner, Warren Russell, Garry Meadows, John Albersworth, and Dan Danforth.

A very special thanks to club member Jamie Yasek, of JY Contracting, who donated more than 20 hrs of his time and equipment on May 11 and 12 at the outdoor range. Jamie used his excavator and truck to address all the berm issues previously identified by the last CFO inspection. He also relocated the C-can, improved the access to the trap house, cleared the area for the new archery range and improved the parking area with 2 loads of road gravel. Jamie was very skilled and operated the excavator like it was an extension of his hand. It was nice to watch a pro at work. Archery News: Thank you to Bob Marsh of Home Hardware for helping the club out by providing a discount on the materials purchased to build the 5 new outdoor archery bag hangers. Also thank you to Warren Russell for building the bag hangers.

3D Archery Shoot June 2 nd and 3 rd The archery group is very excited to be hosting this year s archery shoot. There are a number of wonderful raffle prizes lined up as well as door prizes. New this year, will be the opportunity to shoot from a tree stand. The concession will offer delicious burgers as well as something different for the more adventurous appetite. Many new targets to shoot as well. The fun starts at 9:00 am on Saturday. Wes Smith Archery Director NR&GC Our organizing for the Nelson Rod and Gun Club 3d Archery Shoot next weekend June 2 nd and 3 rd out at the Barrett Creek Range is coming along well Darcey and I are brushing/clearing the course this afternoon (Sunday), and any help we can get next Thursday and Friday (May 31 and June 1 st ) setting up the targets would be great. If anyone has a quad (and a quad trailer) and is willing to help distribute targets Thursday or collect targets Sunday afternoon that would be really helpful. Sunday afternoon (June 3 rd ) at 2 pm we are closing the 3D archery course, and will need some help bringing the targets in from the course and putting them back in the sea can. One other spot we need some help with is the Tree Stand Money Dot 50/50. This will be a tree stand set up (relatively close to the ground) and archers that want to try it out pay $2 per shot. Our Tree Stand Volunteer gets them in the harness, gets them into the stand, ensures they clip in, the archer shoots at a 3D target with a money dot on it, the Volunteer gets them safely back on the ground, and records the distance the shot landed from the money dot. The closest to the money dot gets 50% of funds collected. There will be different 3D targets for traditional bows and compound bows. The access to and from the tree stand will be by platform ladder stabilized with sand bags, so people are not falling trying to get in or out. We are going to do this from 10am to 2 pm Saturday and Sunday. So, if anyone can do a shift or a partial shift either day supervising this, let me know If you can help with any of these tasks, please respond by to me at wes.smith@shaw.ca Or call me at Some of you may have already told Darcey or Cal you can help please respond any way, as Cal is away for a bit, and we would like to have an idea who is available. Thanks.

Eli Lutz won first overall in his age division at the Rock Creek Traditional Bowhunters Shoot over the May long weekend. Congratulations Eli! Project Mapleseed June 28 th As of May 25, there were 4 spots left. Don t miss out registering. Found at Range: FOUND on Rifle Range 15 May 2018 A good quality cleaning rod in original packaging. To arrange return call Dan and describe.

FOOD SAFE COURSE- If anyone is interested in occasionally helping in the kitchen and wishes to take the Food Safe course, the club will reimburse the cost of the course. Contact: Glen McKen Congratulations to Bev Johnson for recently acquiring her Food Safe designation. The club is looking for more volunteers to help with the annual functions that include food preparation. FISHING FOREVER AND FAMILY FISHING at Cottonwood Lake on Fathers' Day weekend June 16 & 17 Richard Green Once again, our club will host my favourite event on Fathers' Day weekend. See the poster! Saturday June 16 is designed for those who would otherwise not be able to go fishing - the folks of any age who are disabled in some way or otherwise unable to enjoy the sport. Many of the folks we will see at Fishing Forever are seniors and not all will go out on the lake but all will enjoy the outing. Sunday is Family Fishing day and we will have a crowd of kids and their parents! Boats, boat captains, and other helpers are vital for the success we have come to expect. If you can bring a small boat with electric motor please contact me. If you can spend a few hours with a boat as a captain, even better! If you can help out with the other tasks, such as marshalling on shore, food prep and distribution, or registration, you are wanted! Give Richard a call at Sunday will be busier than Saturday, so even more helpers are needed on Sunday. Setup will start about 1:00 pm Friday June 15 and there will be security overnight and continuously until takedown at 4:00 pm Sunday June 17.

The Columbia River Treaty Review Team is pleased to invite the public, including all interested members of the Nelson District Rod &Gun Club, to a meeting which will focus on Next Steps at the Mickey McEwen Memorial Hall (Rod & Gun Club), 801 Railway Street the evening of June 15, The Columbia River Treaty, now fifty-years old, is one of the most famous and important trans-boundary agreements. Its future is under review by expert teams from both sides of the border. Negotiations will likely take place over the next decade. Following extensive consultations during a two-year treaty review process, 14 principles have been adopted by that will guide British Columbia in any discussions on the future of the treaty with Canada and the United States. One of the key principles - and the primary goal of the treaty from B.C.'s perspective - is to create and equitably share benefits from trans-boundary co-ordination with the United States, recognizing that British Columbia is impacted by treaty operations. B.C.'s position is that both countries must recognize that for every cost associated with the treaty, there are important benefits that should be shared by both parties. Cross-border co-ordination supports the flood control and power generation needs of the United States, as well as the effective management of their environmental requirements, agriculture water supply and river navigation. Mark the date, June 15, to get the most recent information on the Columbia River Treaty, see you there.
