Surviving an Active Shooter Personal Safety Methodology Dr. Mike Monroe Kiefer Watch my free safety videos at: powermindtraining.com
My Background B.S., M.S.- Genetic Engineering Ph.D., Behavioral Psychology 3
Powermind Project 10 years- Research on Personality Profiles of Successful People 4
Researching/Designing Workshops for 22 Years 5
Understanding Active Shooters and What to Do to Protect Yourself? 6
Case Study- Patrick Sherill 1986 Postal Worker 45 yrs old Go Postal Edmond Oklahoma- fatalities 14 coworkers including supervisor Committed suicide, was expert marksman Weapons- 3 handguns, 45 cal. And 22 cal. Incident duration 15 minutes Disciplined by 2 supervisors day before, feared would lose job 7
What is an active shooter thinking? Most planned it for months to years, Not a snap decision Have talked to others about it, (active online) Have experience with firearms Depressed Mental illness, prescription drugs? Bullied or feel oppressed, angry Mentally ready to die that day, calm, focused Trying to get target(s), and high random body count-schools, or specific persons at work Are in a hurry, searching for targets! 8
Shooter Motives Racism- church shooters Religious Extremism- terrorists Jealousy/Passion- domestic Mental Illness Bullying- school and workplace shooters Anti-government- terrorists Anti-workplace/management- loss of job, loss of self-esteem, manager/supervisor All seek some form of REVENGE! 9
Workplace Shooters Usually seeking revenge on someone, everyone else is collateral damage Prevention strategy for managers: Be nice to staff Be helpful when people ask for help Never discipline in front of others! Never laugh at or ridicule or belittle staff Be helpful, even if staff need to be let go 10
Prevention Tips See something, say something Hear something, say something Watch angry employees! Social media is key! Be aware everywhere you go, exits, front doors, improvised weapons What to carry- pepper spray, stunners, knives, Gun? Think, practice! 11
Average person has no idea what to do and NO training!!! Florida school student- It was total chaos! People were screaming and running, no one knew what to do! 12
What do I do? Freeze/listen to shooter/no! or follow your training! 13
Run, Hide, Fight Methodology Developed by the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security and FBI Options are fluid, determined by distance from shooter! 14
Timing is critical 5-15 minutes duration and it s usually all over You need to be moving in 5 seconds Secured in place or running in 20 seconds Workplace once outside keep going bombs, snipers outside Face-to-face, must fight! 15
RUN- (Crawl) 16
Hide Tips- Crawl if needed Act as soon as you hear shots! 5 seconds! Lock door, turn off lights, build high barricade, cover windows, stay away from door, shield self, get a weapon, phone off Do you have two options to hide near your work spot? Is there an area or room you can barricade? How can you secure the door? What can you use as barricade material? Is there a way out? Get away from the door, many shooters shoot at or through the doors! 17
Hide Tips Belts can be used to hold doors shut, sit to the side of the door Look for a weapon fire extinguisher, scissors, paperweight, stapler, screwdriver, pipe, metal pen What can be used as a shield, desk? Is there an alternate escape route? 18
Fight Fighting is an option for everyone! Select one weapon you are comfortable with and practice with it Fight with all your might! Disable the attacker Commit to maximum aggression! This will be unexpected for shooter!!! Believe you will survive! 19
Fight Distance determines options- 6 feet or less, must fight Enclosed area, no way out Have weapon ready Yell for others to help you- give instructions! Fight may lead to run or hide option NEVER run with a gun! 20
Never have gun out! Who is the shooter? 21
Strike and Run Technique Head strike is best Try to disable an eye or eyes- pepper spray! Neck Secondary genitals Engage in fight, then run or hide, unless you can overpower the shooter 22
Sabre Red Pepper Spray Used by Law Enforcement- legal in MN- Expiration Dated! 23
Key Survival Tips! Grab a weapon yours or improvised and GO, 5 seconds or less, stash your phone, tip for ladies Don t be behind a door, build a high barricade! Have hands open when law enforcement arrives, they watch hands!!! Never run with a gun! Stow the weapon or risk being shot by others or police!!! If you shoot someone you will be sued for years! 24
