TYRONE ARANDA S MIXED MARTIAL ARTS AND HWA-RANG-DO Student Handbook Table of Contents History of Our School and the Martial Arts School Rules and Class Etiquette I am Tyrone J. Aranda. My Black Belts and I will help prepare you for the rest of your life.

Aranda s Martial Arts Aranda s trains in 2 ancient forms of Korean Martial Arts known as Tae-Kwon-Do and Hwa- Rang-Do. The name Tae-Kwon-Do is derived from the Korean word "Tae" meaning foot, "Kwon" meaning fist and "Do" meaning way of. Meaning of Hwa Rang Do. Hwa = Flower. Rang = Man. Do = Way. The common English translations are "The Way of the Flowering Manhood" or "The Way of the Flowering Knights. Tae-Kwon-Do is principally a type of Martial Art and the Hwa-Rang-Do were a group that used the Martial Arts for personal growth and Civil Defense. In our day we teach and follow the principles of the Hwa-Rang-Do 1. Loyalty to one s Country. 2. Loyalty to one s Parents and Teachers. 3. Trust and Brotherhood among Friends. 4. Courage to Never Retreat in the Face of the Enemy. 5. Justice, Never to take a Life without Just Cause. WHAT IS TAE KWON DO? Tae Kwon Do is the Korean martial art that was perfected by the Korean Tae Kwon Do movement in 1955 to supersede ancient Korean fighting arts. "Tae" means to jump, kick or smash with the feet. "Kwon" means to block, punch, strike or smash with the hand or fist, and "Do" means "an Art". Thus, Tae Kwon Do is the technique of unarmed selfdefense involving the skilled application of techniques that include punches, strikes, kicks, blocks, dodges and interceptions with the bare hands, arms and feet, to swiftly overpower an opponent. It instills a spirit of strict self-imposed discipline and the ideal of a noble moral character. Tae Kwon Do also cultivates the virtues of etiquette, modesty, self-control, Perseverance and an indomitable spirit. Tae Kwon-Do can be traced to Tae Kyon. The art of self-defense originated in about the year 650 A.D. during the Silla Dynasty in Korea. Tae Kyon was taught and practiced among the youth of Hwa-rang-Do, who were hand-picked to be trained as military leaders of Silla, one of the three ruling kingdoms of Korea at that time. Tae Kyon's effectiveness was enhanced after it developed hand techniques at the turn of the 20th century when Karate was introduced from China A historical account of Tae Kwon Do would be incomplete without a brief mention of the history of Karate itself. The origin of Karate is lost in legend and myth. But it is believed that Karate had It s beginnings in India thousands of' years ago. It was brought to China at about 400 A.D. by the Indian Buddhist monk Bodhidharma. It was then introduced to neighboring countries by Chinese warriors and missionaries. However Karate underwent many changes in later years. It had been constantly modified by different masters, probably in an attempt to relate it to their individual or national philosophies. This accounts for the existence of the numerous styles of the fighting arts today.

Arandas Martial Arts. At Aranda s Karate the focus of training in the martial arts is the style of Hwa-Rang-Do an ancient form of the modern day Korean art of Tae-Kwon-Do. To broaden the knowledge base of the students and help to ensure that they are prepared to defend themselves the fundamental tenants of the following arts are also taught. Ken-Po - Hap-Ki-Do Combinado - Kung-Fu - Thai-Chi - Ju-Jitsu - Wing-Chung and Muay-Thai. One thing that I do differently than other Martial Arts Instructors is that I go beyond the physical aspects. 1. Through discipline we build the self esteem of each student and help the students to know who they are. 2. We discuss principles of psychology and human behavior to help the students to better work with people. 3. We discuss and practice the principles of respect for their families and the world around them. 4. We discuss history and the philosophies of the people of the world to help the students to gain a greater understanding of the values of different people. 5. We discuss astronomy to help the youth have a broader view of the world and the universe that they are a part of. 6. We discuss physics and general physical sciences to help the youth understand how our planet works and how they need to respect and take care of it. 7. We discuss the physiology of the human body so they can learn how it works, how to take care of it and understand why drugs and other addictive substances and behaviors are so damaging.

The 38 movements of this pattern represent the 38 degrees latitude of Yul-Kok's birthplace, and the diagram represents "scholar". Chung-Gun Chung-Gun is named after the patriot An Chung-Gun. The 32 movements of this pattern represent the Blue age at which Mr. An was martyred in prison in Toi-Gye High Blue Hwa-Rang Red Chung-Mu Brown Toi-Gye is the pen name of the noted scholar YI HWANG, an authority on Neo-Confucianism. The 37 movements of the pattern refer to his birth place on the 37 th degree latitude, and the diagram represents scholar. Hwa-Rang is named after the Hwa-Rang youth group which originated in the Silla dynasty about 1,350 years ago and became the actual driving force for the unification of the three kingdoms of Korea. Chung-Mu was the given name of the great admiral Yi Sun-Sin of the Yi dynasty who was reputed to have invented the first armored battleship - the precursor of the present-day submarine - in 1592 A.D. The left handed attack ending this pattern symbolizes his regrettable death in battle before he had a chance to show his complete loyalty to the King. Po-Un Po-Un is the pseudonym of a loyal subject Chong mong Chu (1400 A.D.) who was a famous poet and 1 st Dan whose poem I would not serve a second master though I might be crucified a hundred times is known to every Korean. He was also a pioneer in the field of Physics. The Diagram (-) represents his unerring loyalty to the King and Country towards the end of the Koguryo dynasty.

Kwang-Gae Kwang-Gae is picked after the famous Kwang-Gae to t o wang, the 19 th King of the Koguryo dynasty, 2 nd Dan who regained all the territories including the greater part of Manchuria. The diagram (+) represents the expansion and recovery of lost territory. The 39 movements refer to his reign for 39 years. Kae-Baek Kae-Baek is named after Kae-Baek a great general in the Paekchae dynasty (660 A.D.) the diagram (1) 3 rd Dan represents his severe and strict military discipline. In 660 when the forces of Silla and Dang invaded Bae-Jai, Kae-Baek organized a fierce army of 5,000 Soldiers who were finally defeated signaling the end of the 678 years of Bak-Jai rule.

Proverbs To fall seven times is to rise eight times. There is no fear but fear it self. In defense your horse stance must be as strong as Mount Everest. Using no way as way, using no limitations as limitations. (Bruce lee). To see is to disbelieve, to hear is to misunderstand, to feel is reality (Zen). He who hesitates is lost. In self-defense we say, those who hesitate are dead. The crane is known by his plumage, the tiger is known by his stripe the warrior is known by his courtesy The gift of existence is through seeking the treasures of knowledge (master t. Aranda). To have victory, one must become victorious. Simplicity is the secret to kicking (John la Tourette). The journey of a thousand miles began with but a single step. Perfection is a road, not a destination. The way you will react can be judged by the way you train. If you lazily train with little effort you can not expect to do much better in the street. If you attack your workouts with Great Spirit and put forth 110% you can be sure to come out on top. The less effort I use, the faster and more powerful I will become (Bruce lee). In sparring, one's mind and body must flow as one's breath. Not to react with thought, but to act with intuitive knowledge (master t. Aranda). Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off the goal. To conquer all, my mind and body must become one. To become the best, one must dream of becoming better.

In sparring you must maintain your strength. There must be swiftness in movement and confidence in oneself. Full attention must be put into the attack. Without balance at all times (the fighter) can never be effective (Bruce lee). Train for a lifetime or you will fall shot of the mark. Be lazy and negligent for one day, and you have already lost the match (Bill Wallace). Only those who risk going too far can possibly find Out how far they can go.. He who knows, yet thinks that he does not know, has great wisdom. He who does not know and thinks that he knows is diseased (Zen). Reach for the best that is within you. One disease, long life, no disease, short life. The wise man, after learning something new, is afraid to learn anything more until he put his first lesson into practice. It is by learning that a person knows their difficulties. We carry within us the wonders we seek without us. Ask not for the world, while complaining about giving a cup of tea. The flowers of tomorrow are found in the seeds of yesterday If you pursue knowledge for a thousand days that will avail you less than one day's proper study... If you do not study it, you will be unable to digest even a single drop of it. Though a man's natural abilities may be excellent, without learning he will not rise high. Principles may be good, but until you learn them you do not know their value. Be of giving, so that you may receive (Master T. Aranda). Do not ponder on knowledge, which is not to be found, for to do so is to cease to run or flow, as water or air (master t. Aranda).

To help the unwise, you will find; you are the wise one (Master T. Aranda). Don't go where the path leads, but rather go where there is no path and leave a trail. If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you. Live now for the end, so that we may begin to live (Master T. Aranda). You must believe to achieve. Nothing whatever is hidden; from of old, all is clear as daylight. Be where you are, that you may be no where else. The pessimist see the difficulty in every opportunity, the optimist see the opportunity in every difficulty. The martial arts are not about learning to honor and respect your instructor or your school. The martial arts are about learning to honor and respect yourself.
