A S P I R E.. AC H I E V E CRKF CHITO-RYU KARATE + FITNESS CRKF Beginner s Package A S P I R E.. AC H I E V E CRKF CHITO-RYU KARATE + FITNESS Welcome to CRKF: ChitoRyu Karate + Fitness! We at CRKF have prepared this package to help you transition into the club and understand what it means to do karate, as well as to assist you in obtaining your first stripe. In the following pages, you will learn important facts about the club, your teachers, uniforms, techniques and more. How Classes Work Karate students must always show up to class prepared. So every day, make sure you have: 1. Signed in at the front desk on the sheet provided. 2. Practiced your techniques and reviewed what you need to know to get your next stripe. 3. Dressed in a clean and tidy karate uniform Gi (pro: Gee) with no markings other than the CRKF and/or ChitoRyu crest and removed all jewelry, watches, etc. 4. Informed the instructors about any injuries or special conditions you might have that they should know about. You need to show up to class ON TIME OR EARLY so you have an opportunity to have any questions answered before the class. Otherwise your time should be spent warming up and/or practicing your material. If you have a question during class, raise your hand quietly and one of the instructors will answer you when they can. When Sensei calls for Shugo (pro: Shoogo), it means that everyone should line up facing the mirrored wall. At CRKF, we line up with the senior belts (yellow, orange, etc.) in FRONT AND TO THE RIGHT SIDE. Beginners should line up at the BACK AND TOWARDS THE LEFT SIDE. If you are unsure, you can always ask a senior belt. Weight Area

Gis are available from the CRKF staff in sizes If you wish to purchase a uniform before class, just speak to one of the CRKF staff and we will get you sized up and taken care of. Putting On Your Gi 1. Put on your pants, tying up the drawstring in the FRONT 2. Fold the RIGHT side of your Gi top across your body, tying it to the INNER LEFT side with the tassels attached 3. Tie the LEFT side to the OUTER RIGHT side in the same way
Putting On Your Belt 1. Loop your belt BEHIND yourself so there is a shorter side on the LEFT (from the hip down to approx. the knee) and a long side on the RIGHT 2. Take the RIGHT side around the front crossing over the short end, all the way around the back, and finally to the RIGHTHAND SIDE where it started 3. Cross the RIGHT side of your belt over the LEFT and center sections, and bring it UNDER AND THROUGH, coming up against the gi itself (basically making a loop around all the belt material present) 4. Once this end is protruding from the top of the belt and close to your stomach, wrap it around the other end from the LEFT side, bring it through the loop you have just made and pull it tight. If this process is still confusing (and it probably is), ask a senior belt to help you out.
Curriculum The CRKF curriculum has been designed to help students learn the skills they need in the correct order. It is broken up into sections physically represented by stripes on their belt, giving students small pieces of the curriculum to work on at a time. When the student has shown that they understand and can demonstrate the necessary skills, they are awarded with the corresponding stripe. All belt ranks have a Curriculum Sheet that students can reference to help them understand the requirements of each stripe. Students will need to study their material at home and using resources like this package, their Curriculum Page (on under Student Resources) and the ChitoRyu manual (recommended) to make consistent progress. By doing so, students can maximize their time in class to do things BETTER, not just to MEMORIZE them. Below is a summary of what you need to know in order to get the FIRST STRIPE on your white belt. 1. Stances Musubidachi (pro: Moosoobeedahchee): Used when bowing or standing at attention. Sotohachijidachi (pro: Sohtohhahcheedahchee): Used when waiting for, or listening to, your instructors. Uchihachijidachi (pro: Oocheehahcheedahchee): Used when starting forms and practicing hand techniques. Shikoashidachi (pro: Sheekohahsheedahchee): Used when attacking/defending to the side.
Seisandachi (pro: Saysandahchee): Used when moving forward and backward. 2. Punches Chokuzuki (pro: Chokoozookee): A straight punch performed to the front when in Uchihachijidachi. Maetezuki (pro: Mytayzookee): A punch performed by the front hand in Seisandachi. Shikozuki (pro: Sheekohzookee): A punch performed to the side while in Shikoashidachi. 3. Blocks Sotouke (pro: Sohtohookay): An insidetooutside middle block. This is performed in front of the body in Uchihachijidachi and Seisandachi and to the side in Shikoashidachi.
4. Kihon Kihon (pro: Keyhone) are basic forms/routines that we use to teach our students a lesson or set of skills. There is one form at this rank: Kihondosaichi (pro: Keyhonedohsahitchee): Three sets of four steps forwards and backwards (24 total steps) with all forward steps being accompanied by a punch and all backwards steps being accompanied by a Sotouke block. The first two sets are done in Seisandachi and the final set is done in Shikoashidachi. There must be a pause between each step and its punch/block. (2x forwards and backwards) 5. Concepts (1x forwards and backwards) Hikite (pro: Heekeetay): This is pulling back the nonstriking/punching/blocking hand to the hip to add more power to the technique and achieve greater balance in the body. Kiai (pro: Keeai): A spirited shout (can say the word kiai or hah or yah etc.) meant to frighten the opponent, increase the power of one s technique and tighten the stomach muscles.
6. Etiquette/protocol Respect: We define respect as the recognizing of value in others and treating them in a manner that displays that recognition. Bowing is our way of showing our respect for our fellow practitioners, our training hall, and the art of karate itself. Do s and don ts: (Not an exhaustive list) Do: Don t: Bow to your Sensei, Sempai and fellow students Show respect to all around you Try hard physically and mentally Be prepared Be willing to help other students when appropriate Listen more than you talk Take your shoes and socks off before you enter the training hall or Dojo (pro: Dohjoh) Recognize that the needs of other students in the class are as valid as your own Chew gum or eat food in the dojo Be disruptive to others Act in a disrespectful way to yourself or others Show up late Leave the Dojo floor once class has started without your instructor s permission Wear clothing under your Gi that protrudes from the neck, sleeves, or pantleg Teachers Sensei Michael Ginn Sensei is the Head Instructor of the club, a 3 rd Degree Black Belt and a Shidoin (Full Instructor) level teacher. Two assistant instructors are also present for classes throughout the week, they are Sempai Kieran Sedgwick (pro: Sempie), a 1 st Degree Black Belt who was been teaching with Sensei for almost 8 years and Sempai Mike Horodelksi, a karate practitioner for over 30 years and a 2 nd Degree Black Belt. If at any point you need to ask someone a question pertaining to karate, these are your guys! Website At CRKF it is your responsibility to use the resources available to you (such as the website and ChitoRyu Manual) to answer questions before speaking to your teachers. Classes are designed to encourage progress through providing a place to practice and experienced supervision. Students who properly use these resources will experience the most success in their karate training. ChitoRyu Karate Beyond The Dojo CRKF s partnerships with karate associations provide its students the opportunity to participate in Provincial and National events including clinics, tournaments and social gettogethers. These events are optional, but attendance is strongly encouraged to foster a community spirit.
