1 July September 2009 Volume 5 Issue 3 Features 2009 Break-A-Thon Kardio Korner Jee Pahng Ee (Cane) Plus Calendar Schedule Instructors 2009 Break-A-Thon By Mary Jo Feldkamp The Break-a-thon was a GREAT SUCCESS! I can't thank everyone who participated and volunteered enough! Every year Saline ATA's efforts to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis have grown. We went from selling candy bars at Busch's to a full blown festival. Mr. Teboe continued to encourage fund raisers as well as starting and growing the Break-a-thon. The first year we did the Break-a-thon we raised $ This year we have raised $ !!!! All of you have become family to us. We are truly blessed to have you in our lives! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! We were fortunate to have The Ann Arbor News visit us (thanks to Ms. Finch) at the Break-a-thon. The article that was printed (with a few slight corrections) is below. I realize I'm his mom (a little biased!), but I have to say that I am very proud of the way Andrew communicated with the reporter. He just blew me away! 'Break-a-thon' raises funds for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation by Lisa M. Allmendinger The Ann Arbor News (Reprinted with permission.) Andrew Feldkamp was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when he was 11 months old. The chronic lung disease, which is [genetic] illness, causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and the digestive tract. But the fact the 15-year-old - he'll be 16 in July - uses an inhaler multiple times a day doesn't stop him from mastering martial arts. "It's good for the lungs," he says, plus it makes him think. He's a black belt and the oldest student at Saline ATA Martial Arts on Woodland Drive. "You go with the flow," Andrew says matter-of-factly And some days are better than others. He says martial arts have kept him in shape and helped him meet friends. "It's so cool here," he says, "My friends here are like a family." And that family came together late last month for the fourth time to raise money to fight the disease that has been a part of Andrew's life. Four years ago the benefit began as a bake sale, and has grown to a full-fledged day of fun culminating with a "break-a-thon," where academy students raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and display their skills in front of an audience. "It's a way to give back to the community; it's about him for this day and others with CF," says Paul Teboe, head instructor and owner of the academy that has about 200 students. "Our studio is like our own family," he says. "We all come together for a good cause." Last year the group raised $8,000 and this year they hoped to raise $10,000.
2 Page 2 of 3 HIYAA! Alex Derkson, 13, and his brother, Spencer, 11, raised $100 for the cause. And they both took a crack at breaking a 1- inch pine board. Alex says he thought it would be fun to learn martial arts, and in two years he's advanced to a "black belt recommended." Rob Derkson, the boys' father, encourages his sons to participate in martial arts, saying although they've always been good kids, it has taught them "to fail first, and then learn to succeed." Austin Hitchcock raised $65 for the cause. The Saline 10-year-old said he [was one of many white belts that had high scores] working toward orange belt the night before. "I decided to do this because I wanted to get faster and stronger," Austin says. In addition to showing advanced skill sets as the young martial artists move up the belt ranks, they must also perform 32 good deeds before testing for a belt. They can range from opening a door to saving a life. For Mary Jo Feldkamp, a [third-degree] black belt, taking up martial arts was a way to get stronger and stay healthy while taking care of her son. Andrew says martial artshas taught him to be respectful of people, look them straight in the eye and be confident. However, he still needs reminders when it comes to keeping his room clean and doing chores around the house. "We need to work on that," Feldkamp says, smiling. As donations continued to arrive, Teboe hoped that the fourth annual break-a-thon would be the academy's most successful. "This fundraiser was his idea to begin with," Feldkamp says. Lisa Allmendinger can be reached at lallmendinger@sbcglobal.net or at Break-a-thon T-shirts with Mr. Teboe's artwork are still available from the Saline ATA Pro Shop. Regular = $8.00 each Baby Doll Cut = $10.00each CF Backpacks ($5.00 each) and Beverage Bands ($1.50 each or 4 for $5.00) are also still available. Visit for more photos.

5 HIYAA! Page 3 of 3 Kardio Korner Reverse (Cross) Punch The reverse punch (otherwise known as a cross punch) can be a very powerful technique. Move your weight forward slightly whilst rotating your hips and shoulders at the same time as you reach the peak of this movement release the punch and immediately recover it back to your ready, guarded position. The reverse punch is easy to identify as you punch with the opposite hand to the leg you have forward. For instance, if you have your left leg forward you will be punching with your right hand. Remember, if you were punching with on the same side as your leading leg then you would be doing a front punch. To perform the reverse punch: Coordination and focus are the key Practice the movement slowly to begin with. Use your shoulder to protect your chin. As you punch rotate the arm slightly inwards. All techniques should be practiced under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Taekwondo Jee Pahng Ee (Cane) The Jee Pahng Ee or cane is an extremely effective weapon. Of all martial arts weapons the Jee Pahng Ee is the weapon that is most commonly used. The cane can be taken anywhere because it is mainly used as a walking aid, and most people are completely unaware that it can also be wielded as a weapon. The shaft of the cane is swung, using centrifugal force to generate powerful strikes. The curve of the crook and the walking end of the cane are used for thrusts, and the crook is also used to hook wrists and ankles.
