Welcome Getting started in Judo with Katana Judo Kai could not be easier. When you turn up for your first lesson you do not need to worry about bringing any special kit with you. You will need to wear track suit or jogging bottoms with no zips or metal of any kind and jackets & belts will be provided. Under the jacket boys do not wear t-shirts but girls should wear a high neck t-shirt, to start this can be any colour while training but if entering courses, competitions and / or gradings must be white. When you turn up for your first training session the normal mat fee ( 2.50 for primaries & Juniors 5 15 years old, and 3.00 for Seniors 16 years old +) will need to be paid. We will ask you before getting on the mat to complete a short contact information form, which can be found at the back of this welcome pack. If you decide to come back for your second session, we will need a payment of 10 for your provisional licence as well as the normal mat fee. A Provisional licence is a temporary three-month membership and insurance coverage with the British Judo Council (BJC). There will be no more forms to fill in as we will use the information on the form completed during your first session. This membership allows you to train at any BJC club, prior to the expiry of the licence but does not allow entry into courses, competitions or gradings. These can only be entered upon purchase of a full licence. Once your provisional licence expires there are two options when upgrading to a full licence. 1 - You can return your provisional licence to the BJC and extend your membership by a further nine months and reduce the cost of the full licence by the 10 provisional licence fee. 2 - You can purchase a full year s membership to start from the date that the provisional licence expires. Both options and costs will be advised in a letter prior to the provisional licence becoming due for renewal. While we do have spare jackets for people to use, it is preferred that when you decide to keep up with Judo that you purchase a Judogi (judo kit / suit). These can be purchased from the club and will come with the club logo embroidered onto it. These can be ordered at our online club shop ( ) for more details where you can order online, or, if you prefer you can place an order at the club.
The Coaches Matthew Hope Head Coach Matt started doing Judo at the age of 15 with Uku Yama Judo Club which unfortunately no longer continues to run. When Uku Yama stopped running Matt continued his Judo with Koi Bristol Judo Club while also training at Yate Star Judo Club, both of which Matt still visits to get his own regular training as well as assisting with coaching. Matt is currently a 3 rd Dan with the BJC and a 2 nd Dan with the BJA and has been selected to fight and represent Team BJC on two occasions, both of which have come after starting Katana Judo Kai. Matt is a FPJ level 2 qualified coach with the BJC and a UKCC level 2 coach with the BJA. Matt is also a Club Level table official and a National Level Referee with the BJC and an approved Referee trainer to examine up to and including Regional level. Matt is also a former BJA level C referee and is the only BJC coach in the area who has attended a Visually Impared (VI) Referee course. Elizabeth Guatieri Club Coach Liz has been doing Judo for many years, her father is the head coach at Yate Star Judo Club where she also trains and is also a coach. Liz is currently a 1 st Dan with both the BJC & the BJA, a UKCC level 2 qualified coach with the BJA and has completed a FPJ level 1 coaching award with the BJC. Liz is also a Club Level Referee with the BJA and a Club Level Table Official with the BJC. Kimberley Milhano Club coach Kim started judo at a very young age, as her Mum and Dad ran Uku Yama Judo Club. She loved getting on the mat, being competitive and learning skills, her school friends never knew, giving her confidence in sports, learning and personality. Over the years Kim always got graded at a high level because she could demonstrate good techniques and compete at a high level, winning medals at national level competitions and for the Avon Area Squad. Kim took a break from judo between having her two children but unfortunately Uku Yama dissolved before she could get back on the mat. Since joining Katana Judo Kai, Kim has familiarised herself with child protection practices to become the Welfare Officer at the club, undertaken a FPJ Level 1 course to revalidate being a qualified instructor and completed a club level table official course to update her knowledge. Kim is currently graded to 1 st Dan with the BJC Whether you participate because you want to get and stay fit, be a technical Judo student or compete, all our coaches are here to help.
Your First session During your first session, we will aim to teach you a throw and how to land safely when being thrown. The throw that you will learn on your first session will be Tai Otoshi, which is the throw incorporated in our club logo Tai Otoshi Body Drop Gradings For most people when they start to learn Judo they want to know how they can get a black belt. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of hard work and effort. At Katana Judo Kai we will work with you to achieve your next grade. The first grading will be done in the club, usually around the time that the provisional membership is upgraded to a full membership but can be put off a little bit longer. First Grading Morote Seoi Nage Two arm shoulder throw Morote Seoi Otoshi Two arm shoulder drop
Ko Uchi Gari Minor inner reap Kesa Gatame Scarf hold Kuzure Kesa Gatame Broken Scarf hold Subsequent Gradings Further gradings may also include these techniques, please do not forget them. Once you have done your first grading in the club members are encouraged to attend gradings held by the Avon Area, of which there are normally three per year which are shared around each of the clubs that make up the area. If you are unable to attend an Area grading it may occasionally be possible to do further gradings within the club.
Progression of badges / logos on Judogi Club logo The Katana Judo Kai logo is embroidered onto the front left skirt of every Judogi supplied by the club and is available to all club members. If you have already bought your Judogi elsewhere we can get this embroidered for you at a cost of 4.50 BJC Judogi badge The BJC Judogi badge is available from the club or direct from the BJC to show that you are a member of the BJC. They are designed to be sewn onto the front left skirt of your Judogi jacket (next to the club logo). Purchasing a badge from the club will save paying the standard postage charge of 3.00 for every order from the BJC Head Office. The cost to purchase a badge from Katana Judo Kai is only 1.00 Avon Area logo The Avon Are Judogi badge is available for any member of a club within the Avon Area to purchase. As you are only able to have a maximum of two (2) badges on the front left skirt of your Judogi, it will be up to you to decide if you want to have this added to your Judogi, most likely to replace the BJC Judogi badge. By wearing this badge, you are showing to everyone the camaraderie and friendship shared between each of the clubs within the Area. These badges may be purchased at a cost of 2.00 each from the club. Team BJC Squad Badge Team BJC meet several times a year for National Squad training sessions. At these sessions attendance is recorded and taken into consideration when a team is selected for International competitions. There are criteria set by Team BJC first of all to be selected to be part of the travelling squad and also to be eligible to receive Team BJC Squad badges. These also are to be sewn onto the front left skirt of your Judogi and are not available to purchase. BJC International Badge If, when representing Team BJC at an International competition, you are skilled and lucky enough to win a medal you may be eligible to apply for a BJC International badge. This badge is unlike all of the others above as it is to be sewn onto the left breast of your Judogi. As these badges are only available to Team BJC medal winners, they are unavailable to purchase.
BJC International badge Your name can also be embroidered here Actual size of area for your name 10 cm long by 2 cm tall Any two of: - Club Logo - BJC Judogi Badge - Avon Area Logo - Team BJC Squad badge
