1 Taekwon-Do Explosion 2013 By Stuart Anslow Taekwon-Do Explosion is a name given to a small tournament run by myself and Mr Hay Harris, 6th degree. The aim of the tournament is to provide a truly friendly competition, that is fun to compete in, has decent trophies to win for those that work hard and provide a little bit of a difference to the standard competition divisions. At this years event we had Sumo Sparring for kids 9 years and under, ITF Patterns, Continuous Sparring, Special Technique and a King of the Ring event. What s different about this tournament compared to others, well: Divisions are not fixed, but rather finalized using a sliding scale, which is dependant on entries, which means you wont see a division with just 2 entries in it, nor will you see a division with 30+ entries in it, as the system allows us to adjust things accordingly and create new divisions should numbers get too high. Sparring is strictly light contact for all grades, including black belts and brilliant referees enforce the rules throughout - we want to see skills not blood! We use the 5 judges system on patterns, so no bias can get through and patterns are judged on overall performance, not whether they did or didn't do sine-wave etc. just whether it was a great pattern or not! And in sparring none of the corner judges are from the clubs of those actually competing! Totally Tae Kwon Do - 83

2 Male and female compete in the same pattern divisions. Uniquely, those aged 15 years old compete in the 15+/Adult divisions, which is another reason we strictly enforce the contact rules - it is a great experience for them! We try to vary the divisions a bit - this year the black belt special technique was Overhead Kick but based on height, rather than distance. The King of the Ring event is open grade and open gender, so sometimes there could be a Queen of the Ring! This years event kicked off at 9.30am following a judges meeting. The youngsters gave some real effort in the 84 - Totally Tae Kwon Do Some of the youngsters bow in Sumo Sparring Sumo Sparring sections. Following this the 14 s and under patterns divisions began, again with some great efforts by all and some real technical performances. Then is was onto the sparring and we again saw some outstanding efforts, some great techniques from the youngsters, with the refs keeping good control of the proceedings. The morning session finished with the Special Technique divisions, which saw the youngsters flying over poles placed further and further apart, with the winners making some outstanding distances. As the kids finished off, the black belts got changed ready to start their patterns divisions. This year, the mix of grades saw us running a 1st Dan only Patterns division and a 2nd Dan+ Patterns Division, which, with the great performances on displayed,

3 allowed the audience to see patterns from 1st Dan up to 4th Dan. Next up was the black belt sparring, again some great displays of skill, whilst all adhering to the light Contact rules of the day - with great sportsmanship, courtesy and friendship shown throughout. Following this, the black belts finished with their Special Technique section, flying higher and higher until a winner was found. A special mention of Mr Andrew Smith who won 3 gold's on the day, one in each division. The 3rd segment that day was the 15+/Adult Kup grades. You could see some nerves on display from the lower grades, as well as the 15 year olds, but when they competed these soon disappeared as they gave some great performances in their patterns. One notable draw was between Chloe Bevan (Dartford TKD) and Dean Armitage (Harris TKD) which drew in the 1st round, then drew again in the second, then a random pattern was chosen to decide their fate! As with the youngsters earlier, the adults gave their all in the sparring, less experience and the odd over excited competitors made the work of the refs a little more involved, a few warnings issued and the odd DQ to keep things in adherence to the rules - but that is the refs job and what Totally Tae Kwon Do - 85

4 a great job they did! The 3rd segment came to a close with the Special Technique division, which is winner takes all! Before the final division of the day, we decided to give a special award out and called it the Indomitable Spirit award. It was presented to Dennis Murrell (BLTSA) whom I had seen at many events, giving his all (in all divisions including sparring), at the ripe old age of 63 - credit and respect where its due, hence the special award. The day ended with the King of the Ring - an open grade, open weight, open gender points fighting knock out event. It saw blue belts against black belts, men against women, but with total control, which meant some very crisp techniques came out! With all techniques only scoring 1 point and only 2 or 3 points to win a round straight out, all the fighters had to be cautious and tactical. Eventually a winner was found in the form of Rayners Lane TKD student, Vikram Gautam who became King of the Ring Many thanks to all the officials that helped out during the day, as well as those on the canteen and our photographers Dean Armitage and Martin Addy and our 1st Aider, John Asher - all of whom not only enable the event to run, but enable it to run smoothly with no problems.
