Introduction Hi, my name is Bruce and today I'll reveal to you the core essentials of the Patriot s Self Defense System - Krav Maga. Krav Maga, an Israeli martial art, was originally designed for the IVF, for the Israeli soldiers as a head-to-head combat style, and it has easily made its way into the civilian population. Nowadays this technique is being taught as an individual martial art system worldwide, with its main focus on self-defense and survival tactics. From the very beginning a Krav Maga practitioner learns that if he is caught in a fight, there is nobody there to help him, there is no doctor that can patch him up, and that he is all on his own. He needs to keep all these in mind in order to survive a life or death scenario. The basic principle of this martial art is to avoid confrontation at any costs.
If you can't avoid confrontation then you must become active and eliminate the threat as shortly and directly as possible, using a fair amount of physical force. Each scenario is different and learning to correctly evaluate each situation can make the difference between getting injured (or worse) and walking away unharmed. For example, being attacked by an armed individual is obviously a lot more dangerous than being attacked by a non-armed individual. Additionally, being attacked by two or three opponents is much more critical than being attacked by only one opponent. Each one of the above-mentioned situations needs to be dealt with directly. Finally, it is crucial for you to get away from the danger zone as fast as possible.
How To Defend Against A Choke From The Front When thinking of choking, you might imagine that this situation is not as severe as it sounds. Well, your first reaction might be to start punching, poking or blocking in every way possible in order to free yourself. However, eventually you will realize that these methods won t actually help you. Even so, Krav Maga consists of techniques or works with techniques that are based on your natural instincts.
For example, if somebody grabs you by the throat, your natural instinct would be to raise your hands up. What you have to remember is that you can't use power against power. So, you always have to make your opponent as weak as possible. In this situation the opponent has the upper hand, so you what you need to do is to block his hands and strike him at the same time. Even if he's more powerful than you, a kick to the groin is going to weaken him a little bit and give you the opportunity to open up the gap. Starting from this moment, it s important for you to continue striking him in any way you can.
How to Do a Defense Kick Forward A defense kick forward is basically a thrusting kick forward. It will make contact either with the ball of your foot, the entire foot, or the heel. That depends on your range and, obviously, on your footwear. You need to remember that this art was originally designed for soldiers wearing boots. So, if you have this kind of footwear, it doesn't really matter how you kick. So it is important to kick and use your entire body to transfer all your energy forward towards the target.
How to Do a Defense Back Kick A defense back kick is basically a kick to the back, using your heel. This kick can be executed from more than one position.
How To Do An Outside Defense Against A Kick Here s how to do an outside defense against a kick to the groin. When your opponent kicks, it s important that you don t use power to stop him. Therefore, you'll always have to move yourself out of the strike zone. You ll want to bring your right hand down. That hand will collide with your opponent s leg, therefore protecting you. Immediately, strike his chin with your left hand. You have to strike him while he's still standing on one foot.
Next, you need to bring your right hand back up, at the same time opening the gap, protecting yourself. How To Do An Inside Defense Against A Kick Here s how to do an inside defense against a straight kick to the groin or to the mid-section. This is a defense technique that is executed from a passive position. The first thing to do is to get out of the kick s range.
In this scenario, your hands are down, from which point you have the closest distance to your opponent s foot. If your hands were up, then you would have many other options to deal with this situation. But since your hands are down, this is the most efficient way to block the kick. The contact will need to be made with his heel, not with his thigh. Because, the higher you go up, the more mass you ll have to move. Finally, strike with a right punch to the face.
How to Do a Single Finger Strike Here are some other types of punches you can do from the basic stand. These are alternatives to hitting directly with your knuckles. After all, in the street context, you don't have to obey any rules whatsoever during a fight. You just need to get out of there by all means. However, should you expect to fight against somebody much larger than you, you will need to use every single thing that could give you an advantage. Shutting down your opponent s visual capacity will create a wide range of options for you in terms of what you can do next.
You can strike him, kick him, take him down or simply get out of the danger zone. Use your finger to strike, try aiming for the eyes. How to Do An All Finger Strike Since you understood the previous strike, this strike has the same purpose, which is to shut your opponent s visual capacity. Except, instead of striking with only one finger, you're going to strike using all your fingers at the same time.
You need to try to shove anything you can directly into his eyes and shut down his visual capacity. How to Do a Strike with the Heel of the Hand Striking with the heel of the hand is an easy but efficient strike that's aiming directly at your opponent s nose or chin. It s also known as the heel-hand strike or the palm strike.
How to Do a Hammer Blow The hammer blow can be done in an upwards or downwards direction. For example a downward hammer blow can be used in the situation where your opponent already got hit and he's already on the ground or in a kneel position.
How to Do an Elbow to the Side The elbow to the side strike is useful when you have to strike an opponent who is positioned on your right or on your left. In a street fight scenario, opponents could appear from anywhere so it s critical to know how to deal with this kind of situation. This strike is done from the basic stand. You need to take a step forward and strike straight to the side at the same time, all while you protect your body.
How to Do an Elbow CHOP An elbow chop is done from a basic stand. It's basically an elbow strike yet just like the hammer blow this technique is usually used when your opponent is already hit or in a kneel position. Another way to use this strike is to just attack your opponent straight on aiming for the head.
How to Do a Hammer Elbow A hammer elbow is executed just like the hammer blow, except instead of striking with your fist you will strike with your elbow. This is a downward strike done from an upright position with one foot in front. This technique can be used in the situation where your opponent already got hit and he's already on the ground or in a kneel position.
How to Do Defense against Punches This technique is used in the situation where your opponent is trying to punch you from a very close range. As always, the first thing you need to do is get away from the strike zone. Also remember not to use power against power. First step is to turn your body, which will bring your arm, right through. This way you will avoid the strike. Next, just like any other inside block, you re going to try and strike him first or at least block his wrist, and continue to glide your hand towards his shoulder. From this position, you need to strike his face.
How to Do Defense against Punches Here s how to do an inside defense against a punch to the face. First you need to step out of the line of attack. Your hand will reach out the minute you see him run towards you. You can grab his wrist and glide towards his shoulder. Next you need to strike him into the ribs therefore opening the gap allowing you to reassess the situation.
Outside Defense against Punches These outside defenses against punches are executed from a low base position. This means your hands are down. When your opponent strikes, the first thing you need to do is get out of the strike zone. Since your hands are down, the easiest way for you to punch is to bring your hand straight up. One hand is going to block his strike and the other hand is going to strike him in the chin. It is crucial for you to do the two moves at the same time.
Outside Defense against Punches This technique is done starting from a low basic stand. First you need to block the strike while getting away from the line of the strike. Do this by coming in with your head toward your opponent s midsection. Next put your hand up to make sure that the punch indeed passed. Obviously you have to strike at the same time. You can continue with a knee to the groin, and open up the gap.
How to Defend against a Side Choke Here s how to do a defense against a choke hold that comes from your side. The first thing you must do is to identify your opponent. Next, both your hands are going to work at the same time. One hand is going to strike him directly to the groin. The other hand is going to attack his thumb. It's important that your hand stays close to your neck. The closer it is to your neck, the more power you will have to hold his thumb and put pressure on it.
The strike to the groin will weaken your opponent and his first reaction will be to open the gap as far as he can. That s why it s important that your other hand will hold his thumb in place putting pressure on it. From that strike to the groin, you ll need to raise your elbow and strike him in the chin. This way you can open the gap and reassess the situation. How to Defend against a Choke from the Rear When an opponent chokes you from the back he will try to pull you down backwards and towards the ground.
The first thing you must do in this situation is to try to resist the pull. That means you ll need to move back along with him and resist his ability to take you over to the ground. Next, attack his fingers trying to pull them down towards your chest. With one hand strike his groin area and at the same time with your other hand, using your elbow, strike his chin. This will allow you to open the gap and reevaluate the situation.
How To Defend Yourself Against A Gun Pointed at your face In this situation you must know two facts. First, the second you touch the gun, it will fire. And second, immediately after that, your opponent is going to feel the recoil. These two facts are critical in any defense against an armed attacker. The number one priority is for you to get out of the line of fire.
Next you ll need to secure the gun by grabbing your opponent s hands twisting and pointing the gun inwards towards his upper body. At the same time you ll need to kick him into the groin. This kick will weaken him allowing you to pull the gun from his hands and open up the gap.
How To Defend Yourself Against A Gun Pointed at your back Here s how to handle this situation. When you hear or feel that a gun is pointed at your back your first instinct will be to turnaround and identify the attacker. The first thing you need to do is to get out of the line of fire. Therefore, as you turn around to look over your shoulder continue the turn by bringing your foot along. Grab his hand and try to bring it to your chest and at the same time using your other hand strike his chin with your elbow.
Hold your opponent s arm with the gun tight. Next kick him using your knee. In all this time you need to keep in mind that there might be innocent people around you so it s critical for you to try to point his hand holding the gun to the ground. Next you ll need to pull the gun from his hand by twisting it halfway down and then pushing it out.
How to Defend against a Stick attack from your Side The stick falls into the category of weapons, which I consider as dulled edge weapons. The only thing you must keep in mind is that the closer you get to the person holding the stick the safer you are. So, the first thing you must do in this kind of situation is to try to get as closer to your opponent as possible.
So the moment when he pulls the stick back, beginning the attack that is when you must counterattack. Come toward your opponent with full speed trying to strike his shoulder with yours. Make sure your head is protected just in case your opponent decides to change the trajectory of the stick. Next you need to lock his arm holding the weapon. Continue with an elbow straight to his face or neck. Next, kick him with your knee in the groin to weaken him. This will allow you to bring your right hand and try pulling the stick from his hand. You can hit him again and open the gap.
How to Defend against a Stick attack from below In this situation the first thing you must do is block the strike by rising your left leg up towards his forearm. After you blocked the strike use your left arm to secure your opponents arm holding the stick and strike him at the same time with your elbow. From this point you can continue with the same techniques mentioned above.
How to Defend Yourself Against a Shirt Grab The first thing you need to keep in mind is that anybody that grabs you is a threat and the only way to get rid of his hand is to forget about it and start hitting. The quicker you start to hit the bigger the chances are to make your opponent let you go. So when he grabs you, you ll need to strike his face right away, knee him into the groin and open the gap.
How to Defend against an Uppercut Stab from close range When your opponent tries to stab you from close range, your first reaction must be to get out of the way of that strike. As his hand comes down, you need to attack his forearm, at the same time you need to punch him and grab his hand. Bring his hand to the side, lock his arm on top of you, grab and isolate his wrist as close as you can to his body and at the same time strike him. From here, you need to grab his thumb, making sure that he cannot open his hand.
Move out and lift the hand holding the knife above your heads so you can always see it and so it s away from your face. As you do this, kick him in the groin at the same time. When you kick him put all your weight on his wrist and bring him to the ground. As soon as he s down you can hit him into the head and pull the knife from his hand and then open the gap.
How to Defend against an Uppercut Stab from long range When dealing with a sharp edged weapon, the rule is you don't necessarily want to close the gap, unless you really have no other choice. And instinctively a good solution will be to try to solve this situation from a distance. So when you see the attacker coming towards you with a knife in his hand the first thing you must do is to get out of the way of the knife. Prepare your kick and aim for his face. Kick!
How to Defend Yourself against A Headlock from The Side. In this situation your opponent grabs you by the neck and the only option you have to get out is by using a throw. First, you need to grab his belt behind his hip. Next, step right in front of him. Grab his groin. Sit, pull him over you and lift him up and throw him over.
How to Defend Yourself against a Side Headlock In this situation your opponent will grab you and try to pull you down. As he pulls, don t resist. Go with him and help him to pull you down, at the same time bringing yourself as close to him as you can, protecting your neck. Next, strike him into the groin, then climb behind him, and look for a vulnerable spot.
You can attack his eyes, his hair, you can attack him underneath the nose or you can attack his throat. Then you need to strike his chin making him look up and at the same time grabbing him by the groin. Try to stand up and force him to fall back. Start hitting him until he lets go and open the gap.
How to Defend against A Full Nelson Here s how to defend yourself against a Nelson attack. When your opponent pulls you from behind all you have to do is grab him, get low, lock him in place, and put your head down and your butt up. Once he's on top of you move your head and body forward and twist so that you bring him on his back directly under you. From this position lift your butt up and try to make a bridge over him so that no part of your back is touching the ground. Strike him into the groin a couple of times and also in the face. From here you need to get up and continue to strike him until you can open the gap.
How to Defend Yourself against a Bear Hug Before we start I want to remind you that all the throws we do in this art are not for a competitive purposes. Their only purpose is simply to inflict damage to your opponent. The main goal in any throw we do is to get the opponent under you and smash him to the ground in the most aggressive way you can. So if you find yourself in this situation, all you have to do is to grab him, put your leg towards the outside.
Continue using his forward momentum and lift his knee up. Then fall directly on top of him. From here you need to strike his groin and his face. Try to get up and continue to punch and kick until you can open up the gap. How to Defend against a Hair Grab When you find yourself in this situation the first thing you must do is close the gap. This will make it more and more difficult for your opponent to pull.
At the same time you need to strike him with your elbow. Next, strike him into the groin so he will let go. Continue hitting him until you are sure the threat is eliminated. How To Defend Yourself Against A Hair Pull When someone grabs and pulls your hair from behind your instinct will be to cover your head with your hands. From this point hold his hand in place with your left hand, turn around and punch him in the face using your right hand.
Continue with a kick to the groin so he will let go and you can open up the gap. How to Do Wrist Manipulations Remember that when we deal with these kinds of techniques in this art, we do it for two purposes. The first is a defensive purpose. Sometimes you just can't use a kick or a strike so your only option will be to use wrist manipulations.
Of course, you can use it for offensive purposes as well. For example, when you have to deal with taking down a hostile individual and moving him from point A to point B, you ll have to use these techniques to make him do what you say. One of the most famous techniques is the "S" shape or goose neck manipulation.
How to Defend against a Knife to Your Throat This is a situation where somebody is trying to take advantage of you by putting a knife to your throat. There's only one direction where you can move from this position and that is away from the knife. Once you get away, you must use your hand to secure the knife. At the same time you need to punch him in the face.
Next you need to kick him with your knee and put pressure on his shoulder and raise the hand holding the knife up where you can see it. Grab his thumb so he cannot let go of the knife and make a transition when the knife is up, push the wrist forward to open his fingers and yank the knife away, open the gap.
How to Defend Yourself against an Overhead Knife Strike Here s how to protect yourself when you happen to have a knife in your possession. The first thing to do when you see that somebody comes towards you with a knife is NOT to pull out your knife. Instead you must let your opponent know you carry a knife and are not afraid to use it. In the case where he decides to attack you even thought he knows you also have a knife you need to take out your knife and put it in
front of him keeping a neutral stand. If he still decides to attack you, you need to attack him first. Do this by taking a step outwards and striking him at the same time. How to Defend Yourself against a Front knife Stab The defense is simply moving out of the line of the attack. Next take a step inward and using your left hand protect your throat and body.
Strike his wrist using your knife. It's important that you strike the wrist. Because, as I mentioned this art was designed for the streets and you might find yourself in a situation where your opponent is wearing thick clothes. In this case his wrist will be the only vulnerable zone to strike. Once you did that you can open the gap and reassess the situation. NOTE: The main goal in the art of Krav Maga is to eliminate the threat. That means that once you are engaged in a fight, the moment you decide that the situation is dangerous and there s nothing you can do to avoid it, you must commit to do anything humanly possible to get out of that situation unharmed. There's no stopping unless there's no longer a threat. You should be committed to continue to strike as many times as it takes. So, if it takes two punches, or a punch and a kick, or a nice good strike to the groin to end an encounter, you should be really happy.
Yet you must understand that you must train for the worst case scenario. That means you should be committed to continue to strike your opponent as many times as it needs in order to put him down. Even after you did this you should still be on alert for other attackers that might jump in and threaten your safety. You have to be prepared to do it over and over again for as many times necessary. Obviously the next thing to do after you've eliminated the threat is to get out of the danger zone as fast as possible.
Conclusion You might ask yourself whether Krav Maga is different or better than other martial arts such as: Jiu Jitsu, or Judo, or Boxing, or Karate, or Muay Thai, or various other martial arts out there. I don't even want to relate to the question whether Krav Maga is better than other arts, because the answer may be based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions. So I can only focus on the difference between Krav Maga and other martial arts. Krav Maga is an art that is taught only for the purpose of selfpreservation. It is not a competitive art. The Krav Maga practitioner is aware that he won t fight against people in the same weight class. The Krav Maga practitioner is aware that he won t fight against people of the same sex. The Krav Maga practitioner is aware that he won t fight against a single opponent.
The Krav Maga practitioner is aware that he is preparing for war. The Krav Maga practitioner is training for living in a world where you have to fight in order to survive. That is the difference. The Krav Maga practitioner is allowed to do whatever is necessary to cause the maximum amount of damage to his opponent, in the shortest time possible. Therefore, the Krav Maga system is different than competitive arts and the reason is simple: We do not compete, we fight for survival!
