2 2018 West Island Karate Championship Osu Shihan, Sensei, Sempai, It is with great pleasure that I invite you to the 17th edition of our annual tournament, the West Island Karate Championship, which will be held on Saturday, ebruary 10, The tournament will be for karate-ka 22 years of age and under with divisions for both kata and kumite. Our aim is to create a tournament which is dedicated to building competitors skills in kumite. The rules for each successive level will be tailored to prepare our young karate-ka, progressively, for the ultimate form of competition in Kyokushin Karate: full-contact knockdown kumite. We want to foster the implementation of a tournament system which prepares our younger students in stages to eventually compete at world-level, full-contact tournaments. By following the Japanese and European tournament models, young karate-ka can be gradually introduced to increasing levels of contact and intensity as they grow older. The goal is to eventually narrow the wide gap which currently exists between the semi and fullcontact levels. Consequently when the time comes for a student to make that jump, he/she will simply be moving up another small level, instead of being forced to make a huge leap that discourages young athletes from competing. I hope you will take the time to read over this document, note the changes from our previous tournaments and support this initiative. 3 REGISTRATION INORATION Registration Deadline: In order to avoid delays on the day of the tournament, registrations will NOT be accepted after: Tuesday, EBRUARY 6, at midnight. Novice ull-contact Knockdown competitors (18-22 years old) should submit registrations AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and NO LATER THAN JANUARY 31 in order to have ample time to prepare. Submitting Registrations: This year we are introducing ONLINE registration! Each dojo director must first register their dojo online by going to: Your students will not be able to use the online registration until this is done, so please do this as soon as possible. We will inform you once we ve processed your dojo s registration. Your students can then register online by going to: We will still require the signed registration form. Your dojo representative should submit all forms and payments together no later than the morning of the tournament. Payment: I would like to ask that each dojo representative collect the fees and ensure that payments are made, IN CASH ONLY, by the morning of the tournament.

Collection of payments and waiver forms are to be made at the designated table apart from the check-in tables. 9:00 am Referee meeting 10:00 am Welcome speech followed by kata competition 12:00 pm Break and preparation of tatamis for kumite competition 12:30 pm Demonstration of kumite rules followed by kumite competition The expected end time of the tournament is approximately 5:00 pm, but this may vary depending on the number of competitors. 5 TOURNAENT RULES Please note: All katas must be Kyokushin katas or a kata of a Kyokushin-derived style. There will be 3 to 5 judges per tatami (court) judging katas. Each participant must announce the following to the judges prior to performing his/her kata: 1. his/her NAE 2. his/her DOJO 3. NAE of the Kata competitors will be judged according to: Strength, movement and balance of stances Knowledge of their respective kata Overall presentation and confidence The judges' scores will be combined to determine the final score for each competitor. Please note: In the event of a tie for any of the top three places, the tied competitors will be asked to perform another kata to break the tie. OR THE TIEBREAKER, SCORING PREERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO THE COPETITOR WHO PERORS A HIGHER THAT EXHIBITS A GREATER DEGREE O DIICULTY OR THEIR RESPECTIVE LEVEL. No coaching or instruction* will be permitted during the performance of a kata. Doing so may result in point deductions or disqualification at the discretion of the judges. The judges' decision is final. * If requested, the head judge is permitted to give timing without penalty to the competitor for the 5 and under division.

6 KUITE Light-Contact (age 7 and under) To encourage those who wish to gain experience in kumite, all competitors age 7 and under will fight using Light-Contact rules. Wazari or ippon may be awarded. ighting will be continuous with controlled contact. Kicking to the head with contact is NOT permitted. The competitor displaying superior technique and spirit will be declared the winner by decision at the end of the match. Chest protector, shin/instep protection, gloves, helmet and groin protection (males) are mandatory. Use of a mouth guard is highly recommended. Semi-Contact (age 8 to 13) Standard Kyokushin Semi-Contact rules apply. A competitor may win by points (wazari or ippon) or by decision if they show superior technique and/or fighting spirit. Strikes and combinations with moderate force to the front and sides of the torso, and to the legs above the knees, are permitted. Only controlled circular kicks (mawashi) to the sides of the head will be permitted. ull chest protector, shin/instep protection, gloves, helmet and groin protection (males) are mandatory. Use of a mouth guard is recommended. ull-contact (ages 14-17) Standard Kyokushin rules apply. Duration of Bouts: 2 minutes with no extensions in the preliminaries aximum of one 1 minute extension (if necessary) only if it is to decide a top three placing in the division (semi-final or final) Kumite matches will have 2 or 4 corner judges with a center referee (the Sushin) who will have the final say in any bout. The Sushin may disqualify any participant as a result of poor sportsmanship, foul language or disrespectful behavior exhibited by the competitor, the coach or the supporter(s). The judges decision is final and must be respected. 8 Legal (Allowed) Techniques Head (Jodan) Round kicks/circular (mawashi) with control - only to the side of the helmet. When permitted, strikes must be sufficient enough to demonstrate intent and control of a technique. It is at the Sushin s discretion to determine whether a point is awarded or whether a warning should be given for excessive force or lack of control. When applicable, any kick to the head that does not exhibit control or restraint will be deemed illegal and may result in a warning or disqualification. Torso (Chudan) Straight or round kicks to the front or side of the torso All punches to the front or side of the torso Legs (Gedan) Round kicks (mawashi) above the knee on the outside of the legs Round kicks to the inside of the legs (uchi mata) above the knee Illegal (Disallowed) Techniques for Juniors (17 and under): Head (Jodan) Any hand or arm techniques to the head Knee techniques Straight kicks (ae, Yoko, Ushiro Geri) Torso (Chudan) Open hand techniques (Shuto, Shotei...) Strikes of any kind to the back of the Torso or the head Legs (Gedan) Any straight kicks (ae, Yoko, Ushiro Geri...) Strikes to any part of the knee or below Leg sweeps of any kind Striking the groin is illegal. Jumping kicks or leaving the tatami to deliver a strike is NOT permitted. Grabbing, holding, pulling or pushing of any kind is NOT permitted. Some forms of safety gear will not be permitted if they are deemed dangerous or offer an unfair advantage as determined by the tournament director. Taping or reinforcing of the joints is NOT permitted. Illegal strikes are strictly prohibited and may result in immediate disqualification at the Sushin s or tournament director s discretion. A competitor will NOT be refunded in the event of a disqualification. A full explanation of the rules will be given to all competitors prior to the commencement of the kumite competition.

I hereby assume full responsibility for any and all injuries or damages or losses that may be sustained or incurred by me while competing or while in attendance at said event. I also acknowledge the inherent nature of this tournament and the possibility of injury as the competition involves contact. Therefore, I hereby waive all claims against West Island Karate / Karate de L Ile or any person involved therein, or any agents of said organization, including but not limited to promoters, staff, judges, referees or competitors of the tournament against any injuries or damages or losses that may occur or that I may suffer, and hereby consent not to sue any such individuals or organizations involved in the said tournament for any reason whatsoever, as I hereby certify that I am assuming all risks resulting from this tournament. It is understood that this is a sporting event that involves physical contact. It is understood that any treatment given for any possible injury will be of first-aid type only. I give consent to any and all reproduction of my likeness created in any manner (pictures, videos and the like) for promotional or publicity use and waive any claim for compensation. Please note that this is an application and may be refused at the organizer's discretion, and that there will be no refund whatsoever by reason of any kind of disqualification or expulsion. The director reserves the right to verify any information by asking for picture identification or re-weighing of any competitor. Immediate disqualification without reimbursement from the tournament will be the result of any false information provided, including as to weight, rank or age. Please note that full-length chest protectors will be supplied and are ANDATORY for all competitors age 13 and under, without EXCEPTION.
