Callander Cycle Trails Project As part of this study we plan to include outline designs for a progressive blue grade trail of min. 5KMS with multiple optional features of varying grades. Does this sound like something you would enjoy riding? Answer Options Yes!! No Comment Response Percent Response Count 90.4% % answered question skipped question Number Response Date Comment Categories 1 Jul 15, :34 am Would like them to be alot longer 2 Jul 15, :51 am A longer red trail would be much more enjoyable and judging by my experience of similar local trails (Pollock park and Whitelee) a short blue trail would be unlikely to attract visitors. 3 Jul 14, :38 pm For long term attraction of bikers the trail should be red graded. Most dedicated bikers will not continually travel unless the trail is worth the drive. Most novices would not travel long distances to ride either. 4 Jul 8, :43 am I'd need to know omore 5 Jun 30, :49 am Recently took a day trip to Whitelees Windfarm and Cathkin Braes. The windfarm trails are not very impressive; entertainment for around 10 minutes, too flat, all the same throughout. Cathkin Braes is very good; being varied, hard in places, proper hills, good views, etc. 6 Jun 28, :05 pm Don't make too easy 7 Jun 27, :16 pm But would also enjoy red and blacks trail if possible 8 Jun 26, :49 pm Possibly 9 Jun 25, :56 am Definately 10 Jun 23, :36 am preferably red grade 11 Jun 22, :50 pm I prefer technical trails, reds and blacks 12 Jun 22, :47 pm I prefer reds and blacks, techy stuff, and longer trails. 13 Jun 22, :23 pm Definitely. Blue grade is perfect for most MTBers, and the thing i enjoy most. Making the trail as long as possible according to your budget would be my preference.

14 Jun 22, :12 pm 15 Jun 22, :46 am connected to other trails in the area. 16 Jun 20, :54 pm Red or black for me. 17 Jun 20, :22 pm Should be accesable for all abilities from wee ones to old ones 18 Jun 20, :44 pm Sounds right. Try to maximise the proportion of cyclists that would try it and enjoy it, whilst letting them see harder stuff they might have a go at next time. Don't spend huge amounts of money on obstacles that only the elite can tackle, or that are unusable in the wet, etc. I guide, and this would work well to introduce clients before setting off onto other trails, if it were I think it is the minimum size and complexity to be a draw for those further afield. I think the addition of a well located skills and pump track would also add interest and variety for all visitors. Would be nice if more new trails were built to sure mor experienced riders, or build trails with 19 Jun 20, :41 pm optional grades. 20 Jun 20, :57 pm It something I would take my sons to practice and develop - a good alternative to carron valley 21 Jun 20, :51 pm maybe 22 Jun 20, :39 pm Blue is too easy we need more black grade features Would prefer red. Not going to travel from Glasgow for 5km of blue trail. If it was 15km of blue trail the standard of Glentress (blue velvet etc.) then I would go once a year. A mixture of trails, with 23 Jun 20, :10 pm some more challenging sections (like Comrie Croft) would make me go 4-6 times a year. 24 Jun 19, :47 pm Make it steeper & faster bro 25 Jun 19, :25 pm And my boys (8 and 6yrs old) would love it!! however some more variation would be better. Perhaps a Red run too or make the blue run 26 Jun 19, :41 am longer, as 5km is very short. 27 Jun 19, :05 am Although longer would be better I'm not sure a 5km trail would make it worth the drive. It would really need to be >10km long to 28 Jun 19, :38 am encourage me. 29 Jun 19, :40 am Too easy and no real challenge or satisfaction to be gained by riding beginners trails 30 Jun 19, :26 am 15km at least would make it worth the visit. Carron valley trails are the min you should go for 31 Jun 19, :14 am 5km is quite short so could become very repetitive if doing loops. 32 Jun 19, :16 am A red section would also be good. If its blue like glentress then ace 33 Jun 19, :29 am 10 km + would be better. 34 Jun 19, :59 am People are screaming out for technical challenging black trails and would travel for it 35 Jun 18, :12 pm To short, but a good start if further development was proposed. 36 Jun 18, :02 pm Would use this trail with my children and beginner/improver adult mtb riders. 37 Jun 18, :40 pm Adding black and red graded features would be nice 38 Jun 18, :26 pm Sounds a bit short/tame for me.but I'd still bring my children to it. 39 Jun 18, :24 pm But only with kids

40 Jun 18, :24 pm However I would suggest some links to natural routes and technical features. Callander estate which is always quiet yet boasts miles of straightforward trail and is close to a population centre shows what not to do. The core mtb community wants difficult trails. Half the fun is beating something difficult 41 Jun 18, :25 pm Sounds good! For a start. More trails need to be developed, this would not only benefit locals but visitors to the area and I'm sure if the local High School might support this too - the leisure centre definitely supports trail developments 42 Jun 18, :38 pm Lots of difficucult options please!! :) 43 Jun 18, :46 am As long as it was fun 44 Jun 18, :27 am A well designed blue trail, particularly if it has progressive options, can be just as much fun as a more technical trail.

As part of this study we plan to include outline designs for a progressive blue grade trail of min. 5KMS with multiple optional features of varying grades. Does this sound like something you would enjoy riding? Yes!! No

Callander Cycle Trails Project What features would you like to be included on a trail as described above? Answer Options Berms Off Camber Corners Rollers Roller Doubles Rock Sections Technical Sections Drops Timber Skinnies I don't understand any of these! I'd rather ride natural trails than purpose built thanks Other (please specify) Response Percent Response Count 69.7% % % % % % % % % % answered question skipped question Number Response Date Other (please specify) Categories 1 Jul 15, :31 pm A small bit of everything 2 Jul 15, :34 am inluding natural 3 Jun 28, :05 pm Though rather ride natural there is scope for introducing natural features into trail centers (rocks, technical etc) so that people can progress and make more use of the greater wilderness and less dependence on trail centre riding IMHO 4 Jun 27, :16 pm and natural trails, i like all tbh ( The more diversity the better IMO ) 5 Jun 24, :47 pm mixed in with natural trails 6 Jun 24, :35 pm Table top jumps 7 Jun 24, :56 am willing to give anything a try! 8 Jun 24, :23 am I am sure my child would know what these were! 9 Jun 24, :38 am Sections suitable for younger riders would be great! 10 Jun 23, :03 pm To be honest, as natural as possible but all of these features can be found in natural stuff so get it all blended in and not a skills area.

11 Jun 22, :23 pm A flowing trail, rather than a technical one is my preference. Berms would enable this, but jumps would not. Just a bit of everything, but perhaps with a slightly more natural feel than say the bottom part of Carron Valley. For me, a longer trail with great views is a better investment than a load of successive table-tops/bmx style features. If possible, looking to join up forestry/estate track deadends with new single track has to be a cost-effective way of making new big loops possible, (e.g. 12 Jun 22, :12 pm west side of Finglas reservoir). 13 Jun 20, :22 pm All of above as long as anybody can go on them 14 Jun 20, :39 pm Big jumps, hips, step ups, steep sections 15 Jun 20, :16 am For a blue trail try to fit in as much as possible, but obviously natural trails have their place too. 16 Jun 19, :35 pm downhill downhill downhill Ideally also something wide enough for a kiddie trailer (or alternatives around narrow sections) - 17 Jun 19, :19 pm helps when planning biking trips where parents take turns at riding the fun stuff. 18 Jun 19, :54 am Using the layout of nature and not being "man made" is good 19 Jun 19, :37 am A good combination of all. I've included all the above because a short blue grade trail would need more technical options for 20 Jun 19, :29 am more experienced/competent riders. A 15 km trail would be far more attractive. 21 Jun 18, :53 pm A mix of natural and constructed 22 Jun 18, :26 pm 23 Jun 18, :24 pm Natural esque trails with roots 24 Jun 18, :25 pm A bit of natural with a variety of features 25 Jun 18, :38 pm Berms, tabletop jumps Again all good for a family day out, but not something I'd choose unless it was longer or had more options like gt

What features would you like to be included on a trail as described above? 80.0% 70.0% 60.0% 50.0% 40.0% 30.0% 20.0% 10.0% 0.0% Berms Rollers Rock Sections Drops I don't understand any of these!

Callander Cycle Trails Project There is also the possibility of including a Pump Track, and skills loop / area. This would be in a more compact area and be designed for specific practice of skills, mostly aimed at beginners and younger riders, as well as being used for coaching sessions. Is this something that you would use, or think should be included in the project budget? Answer Options Pump Track Skills Loop / Area Comment Response Percent Response Count 54.5% % answered question skipped question Number Response Date Comment Categories 1 Jul 21, :29 pm It all sounds good, but must work with the natural enviro around it, and not be turned into a commercial money maker 2 Jul 16, :58 am Yes, both to help beginners and improvers. 3 Jul 15, :31 pm They are both pretty good but I wouldsy a skills course with a bit of a pump track 4 Jul 15, :38 pm No interest in this 5 Jul 15, :34 am Have a 3year old who already uses these facilities in other areas. Definately use 6 Jul 14, :38 pm Most trail centres have generic skills loops that are rarely ridden 7 Jul 11, :31 am I wouldn't use but would support its inclusion. 8 Jul 8, :43 am maybe! 9 Jun 30, :49 am No. Spread the budget out over a big an area as possible, otherwise people will only come once, for about 10 minutes. 10 Jun 28, :05 pm Big fan pumptrax 11 Jun 27, :16 pm pump track and skill lopp can be fun to warmup on and have a bit ofa play on 12 Jun 27, :12 am I think people looking for a blue graded track would be confused at the purpose of a pump track in this context. 13 Jun 26, :49 pm I would not use either of these 14 Jun 25, :56 am These are a must to help youngsters with skills and confidence. 15 Jun 24, :56 am not sure what they are..

16 Jun 24, :38 am A kids section would be well used! 17 Jun 23, :03 pm Dedicated areas for this is a very good idea. 18 Jun 23, :36 am Yes but would prefer trails that would last a whole morning or long afternoon. 19 Jun 22, :24 pm This is great at allowing young children to get involved. Not unless you have a big budget. Locally, Muthill village have just run a fund-raising cycling sportive to raise money for a new cycle track near there. I would definitely be interested in joining 20 Jun 22, :23 pm in such an event to raise money for tracks in Callander, should that happen. Totally appreciate the attraction for kids, but would personally prefer to have training features integrated into longer trails. I would like to see younger people actually riding and getting fitter, not 21 Jun 22, :12 pm necessarily learning tricks. There is one in Aberfoyle. I think and development should complement and build on local facilities 22 Jun 22, :46 am for the Trossachs as a whole. This would detract from the other facilities already given funding in the local area Thornhill and Aberfoyle. Each Village could have a different area or skill so that people come to the area not 23 Jun 20, :22 pm just Callander and no where else 24 Jun 20, :34 pm Include - not fair to get beginners straight to technical riding We have 3 kids who are all keen cyclists have these features makes the total offer a much more 25 Jun 20, :44 pm attractive offer All that seams to be getting funding is for beginners trails, Scotland has plenty of these, look at Wales for the way to go, boosting the economy around there trail centers, trails to suit all capability, that's the way forward 26 Jun 20, :41 pm 27 Jun 20, :39 pm Nah 28 Jun 19, :25 pm My boys (8 and 6yrs old) would love it!! 29 Jun 19, :54 am Sounds good tho I don't know what they are! 30 Jun 19, :41 am It should be included. 31 Jun 19, :38 am Better to invest it in the main trail and provide coaching opportunities for people 32 Jun 19, :40 am Should not be included as they see little or no use. Although I wouldn't use them, think they are important for beginners, families and young kids to 33 Jun 19, :50 am get experience 34 Jun 19, :26 am This is the 5km proposed? 35 Jun 19, :37 am Yes, ideal for newcomers especially young children 36 Jun 19, :59 am Not intersted in beginner trails 37 Jun 18, :42 pm I could use this to train others 38 Jun 18, :09 pm Not sure what a pump track is. Certainly an easier area for smaller kids would be good. 39 Jun 18, :02 pm Just more trail metres please. Pump tracks etc have limited appeal to me. 40 Jun 18, :55 pm Great for young ones to teach skill but I probably wouldn't use it

41 Jun 18, :25 pm Comrie croft has a perfect example of this 42 Jun 18, :38 pm The skills loop/area could include a pump track 43 Jun 18, :46 am Always goo to encourage younger/beginner riders 44 Jun 18, :31 am Would be great fun 45 Jun 18, :27 am Great for coaching and developing skills that can then be transferred onto the trails.
