July The Official Newsletter of the North Carolina Region SCCA REport First, I need to make a By Rex Deffenbaugh correction from my last report. I was quickly corrected when I said that the race that benefits Angels Among Us charity was the Oak Tree Double National, when it actually is the March Memories. We can all be proud of our great contribution to that great cause. I hope we can keep growing the amount we contribute to this and our other charities. Our Oak Tree Double National race was a good racer for us. Attendance was down slightly over last year, but still a well-attended race. The weather was good and the racing fun. This race has the potential to become a very good race for us. The Al Farier SARRC/MARRS was a good race for us, also. While attendance was down slightly from last year, we still did not lose money on the event. Most people thought both these races were well-organized and executed races. NCR still holds the reputation as one of the friendliest regions and diriver rank it among the best regions for racing.. Another occurrence, that has the potential for fun, is work that a couple of our members have done to race again at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Ron Earp and Jeff Young have started discussions with CCR and the track about having a race there. This group of guys remember how much fun it was to race there and were interested enough to begin talking to people about it. They found new management at the track and CCR that were both open to this possibility, and they continue to work toward that end with the Board's support. If all goes well, we could race there again - I'd love to! Rayhall was granted a provisional SCCA Pro Racing license based on his previous experience for the April inaugural Rounds of the Pro FE series at Road Atlanta. In addition to the presenting sponsorship, Foremost Insurance Group is also the Official Motorcycle Insurance Sponsor for all 2010 motorcycle events held at VIRginia International Raceway. Jason Britton, star of Speed TV's SuperBike series, will be a featured performer. He is widely recognized as the premier motorcycle stunt rider in the sport and is now in his fourth season of the popular television series. "Jason Britton has been a popular attraction and a tremendous crowd pleaser here in the past," said Josh Lief, General Manager of VIRginia International Raceway. "His presence will only add to what already promises to be our biggest event of the year." Britton, who started riding motorcycles when he was just two years old, began competing in motocross at age 12 and has gone on to star in a number of movies in addition to his TV work on Speed TV. Today, he is considered a leading figure in the realm of extreme motorsports. Scheduled for August 13th thru the 15th, 2010, this event will feature AMA Pro SuperBike and Harley XR 1200 motorcycle races. July 2010 Page 3 The Bulletin

In addition, VIR will also feature a variety of activities for motorcycle fans of every age throughout the weekend; including big screen outdoor viewing, a bike show corral, two nights of live music, vendors, unique food and more. "Thanks!" from the are By Heather Powers - NCR Assistant RE We often hear about drivers that work F&C, but we don t really hear about the other specialties. So, I wanted to take a moment to mention a few of other drivers who help out North Carolina Region at our races. Jerry Pell and Dwight Cooke often help in Tech. Bill Foster has been spotted lining the paddock before a race or working in Registration. Tim Lyons, Patrick Pardee, and Todd Cohen volunteer to drive the pace car when they aren t racing. Although, let s face it, who wouldn t like an opportunity to lead the race, any opportunity?! John Lindquist has worked both Pit and Grid. Steve Rose has worked F&C and, most recently, he worked on Pit Road at our National. Last, but certainly not least, the most thankless job at the track is being a steward. Wayne Quick is currently a Steward in Training and helped us at the SARRC/MARRS this year. Pax Lemmon, a Miata driver from Florida, helped us as an SIT at our National this year. Ken Blackburn and John Nesbitt work as stewards almost as often as they race (maybe more often). They have even been known to pull double duty when we were short handed and have worked as a steward on the same weekend that they were racing. I know that can t be easy. I apologize if I have missed anybody, but I wanted to make sure to let everyone know that the region is grateful to have such a fantastic group of drivers helping us put on the best races around! Take exit 147 off of I-40/I-85. All Welcome! I recently heard someone ask if we know where the people who come to our events are from, so I decided to run some numbers and figure it out. I found some of the results to be interesting. I wasn t surprised to know that we had so many cars from the DC region, but I was surprised at how many people were from Florida and at how many divisions were represented. I would love to see us have drivers from all of the divisions. How can we make that happen? I was driving home after the SARRC/MARRS weekend still high on the adrenaline of the day thinking about how the race went and it occurred to me that Group 6 had quite a few current or past members of the board. There was a delay before our session taking care of some clean up on track. That allowed us the opportunity to hear the announcer calling the drivers in the field. Our Regional Executive, Rex Deffenbaugh was sitting on the grid right in front of me. When his name was called I heard a group of cheers, then my name and another group of cheers. I think that we should have people on the grid all the time cheering when names are called. It was a nice little ego boost and I liked it. Neal Verne Harrison one of our new Members at Large, was flying in his ITA Acura. Blair Stitt, another one of our Members at Large, drove his awesome looking freshly painted IT7 car. When a race car is first painted it can be stressful until you get that first scratch. Well, Blair got that out of the way on the maiden voyage of the paint job and he did it with a bang. Glad I wasn t the culprit. Sorry Blair. We also had John Lindquist, the Chapter Coordinator for West Chapter, in his ITA Fiero and man can that thing motor down the straights! Mark Senior, a past RE was out there in his freshly painted Miata. If you want a good laugh, ask him about some of the gremlins that can strike when you paint a car. Sometimes not everything is put back as it should. Rex Deffenbaugh and I were gridded next to each other, both in IT7 s. The way the group accordioned on the front straight the start was almost a standing start. That led to a pretty hectic and crazy start. I was determined to get in front of Rex, but stay out of the chaos. After we passed the starter stand, I could see the pinball action begin. Cars were off the left side of the track, the dirt flying, adrenaline rushing. We crowded down into turn one, people still bumping off each other, up on the curbing trying to stay out of trouble. My only focus was to hang on to the rest of the 7 s and get ahead of Rex. After a couple of tense laps things finally settled out into a group of about 5 cars going at it. Some of them fast in the straights and others fast in the corners. After some switching back and forth, I finally ended up in front of Rex. Determined to stay there I became a drafting fool! I tucked under that ITA Acura from MARRS and hoped he didn t brake check me since I had a pretty squishy brake pedal and you could barely fit a piece of paper between our bumpers. It s been a while since I have been in a battle like that. Thanks to Steve Rose for letting me drive his car. I had a great time! I am looking forward to doing it again in October! This was one of those adrenaline rush races that reminds me of why I endure those weekends where nothing seems to go right. Remembering Al Fairer by Bruce Dover Like many SCCA Starters up and down the east coast, my mentor while learning the specialty was Al Fairer. Learning the intricacies of being a Starter is not a quick process, but Al was a thorough teacher. Having spent a couple of years working F&C, my first weekend in the Start stand was a real July 2010 Page 5 The Bulletin

eye opener. As the former SARRC-Formula-Ford- Champion-turned-Starter, Rob Suggs, once told me, it is definitely the Best Seat in the House! Al eased me into the position over a period of several race weekends. My first race start was 3 Spec Racers in a Regional race at Rockingham! I remember working one of the SEDiv Double National races at Roebling Road, about 1997, I think. At that track, the Starters also work pit-out and do the splitting of the cars coming off the grid. I was up to start the race and Al was working pitout. After the race was checkered and the track was cold, here came Al, with that little shuffling walk of his, across the track and up the stairs. He walked right up to me and said, You lifted your elbow before you brought the green flag up. Try not to telegraph your start. While everyone else had been watching the cars at the start of the race, Al had been watching me! I learned my lesson, though, and he taught me to remain perfectly still and make one fluid, non-telegraphed motion with the green flag when starting a race. He watched every start, and when you got it right, he also let you know you d done well. He was also one of the most even-tempered people I ve ever known, which served him well as a Steward. He didn t get angry easily and when he did, it wasn t like anybody else. You really had to know Al to realize he was angry. As his health failed him and he transitioned from Starter to Steward, he maintained his focus on what was important. He had taught me that the two conditions you look for in a good race start are safe and fair and that was the same standard he held for the drivers on the track as well. As long as they conducted themselves in a safe and fair (sportsmanlike) manner, they had no problem with Al Fairer. The flag set that we used back in those days, was a set that Al had actually made himself on his sewing machine! Over the winter, he would take them home, remove them from the sticks, wash them, iron them and put everything back together. After he died, Kaye agreed that it would be OK if I performed that service. So, one cold winter evening, I decided to take care of the flags. They were constructed in such a way that there was a sheath on one end of the flag, into which the stick was inserted. To keep the flag from slipping off the stick, there were a couple of holes in each sheath so that a couple of small screws, with oversize washers, could be inserted into small drilled holes in the stick, which matched up with the holes in the sheath. I was watching a movie on TV while I was disassembling the flags and not paying much attention to what I was doing. After they d all been washed and dried and were ready to go back together, I slid one of the sticks into the sheath of one of the flags and the holes didn t match up. Great! I thought, Now I ve got to go through and try to match up each stick with the appropriate flag. But, when I picked up the first stick, I noticed, about 3 inches down from the end of the stick, in an area that would be covered by the flag sheath when assembled, in small letters, written in pencil, in Al s handwriting, the words, Red flag. I picked up the next stick and, sure enough, it said, Black flag. As I checked them all, each stick was labeled for the flag that fit it. I hadn t even thought about that when I was removing them! It occurred The Bulletin Page 6 July 2010

to me even after he s dead, Al is still teaching me! We ve retired that flag set now, bringing it out only once a year for the Al Fairer SARRC/MARRS Challenge, a race which he championed. Every time I take those flags out, I smile to myself, remembering Al and the great person he was. My life is better, just for having knownn him and that s why I know that I speak for many when I say, Al, we love you and we miss you. Pirelli Ultimate Track Car Challenge VIR July 23 From Grassroots Motorsports At its core, the Pirelli Ulitmate Track Car Challenge is a very simple event. Apart from some simple classing guidelines, the UTCC is a run whatcha brung affair that settles the argument. Think your car is in the hunt? This is a great year to prove that you ve got a fast car. The annual Pirelli Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports is here to provide the answer. This event will pit a wild assortment of track-ready beasts against the clock to determine which is the quickest of all. The action will take place at Virginia International Raceway s Full Course July 23, Spectators are invited to attend, and VIR will charge $10/person at the gate for all spectators. As always, we re opening preregistration for the event at: to anyone who thinks they ve got a great track car: That includes everything from casual weekend toys to full-tilt race cars. Obviously we re looking for fast cars, but we also love variety. Part of the fun is seeing how a comparatively tame car fares against the meanest of the mean in the same conditions. The editors of GRM will draw from this pool of preregistrants to fill the invitation-only spots at the event. As always, readers will be able to vote potential competitors up or down within the UTCC category at CarDomain.com; the GRM editors do pay attention to these popularity ratings when picking cars for the event. Triangle Chapter Update By James Shanks The June meeting of the Triangle Chapter was, once again, held at our old watering hole, the El Rodeo Restaurant in Raleigh, now that the Cinco de Mayo festivities have passed. And while this one did not have a public marriage proposal as our last meeting did, it was quite entertaining. Our own Blair Pepe Stitt provided us with in-car video from VIR and Roebling Road that looked mighty impressive on thatt 46-inch LCD TV the restaurant lets us use. Some people even agreed that Pepe had no choice but to hit that guy in front of him on the start. I mean, why would someone check up like that on the start? Anyway, the tap was light or so it appeared. We re just glad that there wasn t any damage. The business meeting was short. It was reported that our net income is running considerably behind last year and that while we are currently in the black that is because our specialty chief and committee chairs have consistently under spent what they have been budgeted for. Entry revenues were down a lot for the March event, and the Double National and Al Fairer Challenge, while July 2010 Page 7 The Bulletin

successful, did not produce as much revenue in the past. It appears, however, that as long as the October races do well, the Region should finish this year in the black as well. As reported last month, there is a proposal going forward to have us co-sanction an event at Charlotte Motor Speedway next June and the details are being sorted out by the NCR Comp Board. A group of NCR Board members also met with Board members of Central Carolinas Region at Carolina Motorsports Park to discuss how we might work together on this. And while this event has not been finalized yet, efforts are underway to add it to the proposed SEDIV calendar for 2011 which will be presented at the SEDIV Mid-year Meeting. It was also reported that the drive-arounds for charity raised $975 for Angels Among Us, the fundraising group for the Brain Cancer Center at Duke. And that the car classification rules for the 13-hour enduro are under revision. Apparently we will be using a more inclusive catch-all class called IT-NC in place of last year s ITE rules. And that was just about it. We closed with roundrobin introductions of all those present so that we could introduce ourselves to new member Geoff Cantrell, who recently attended the Bondurant racing school in Phoenix and plans to start driving. Best of luck, Geoff and welcome aboard! And speaking of new members, Membership Chair James Shanks announced that our ranks have grown from 762 in December to 803 by the end of May, and that the number of weekend memberships is rising as well. We have averaged about 20 for each racing event and the Solo folks have had 62 in the last two months. The participants at this June meeting were eager to talk about the races they had attended and that talk lasted well after the meeting formally closed. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. Why not make plans now to attend the July meeting on Wednesday, July 7 and see why it s as much fun as we say it is? I ll see you there... or at the races! VIR Named Among Top Six Road Courses From VIR Press Release Car & Driver magazine's current issue has an article on the best 6 road courses in the US. Not surprisingly to many, but still not taking it for granted, VIR was named to this most prestigious list. Of over 100 road courses in the US, this puts VIR at the very top echelon of permanent road race facilities in the country. The recently published article features an overview of the track's beginnings as well as a detailed turnby-turn overview of the entire course with the best places to watch, "scary corners "and the current track record. The article can be viewed in its entirety at: res/10q2/america_s_best_road_cour ses-feature Board Meeting Minutes March By Jerry Pell March 17, 2010 Present: Rex Deffenbaugh, RE, Buddy Matthews, Ron Gentry, James Shanks, Steve Keadle, John The Bulletin Page 8 July 2010

and Annie Lindquist, Wayne Quick, Blair Stitt, Scott Gallimore, Mark Senior, Jerry Pell, Neal Harrison, Brad Draughon, Bruce Dover, Heather Powers, William Little, Ginny Condrey, Hayden Beatty; arriving later, John Uftring. 1. The meeting was called to order by Rex Deffenbaugh, RE, at 7:00 p.m. at the Sagebrush Restaurant, at Exit 147, Highway I-85/40, Graham, NC, Highway Motion (Lindquist/Shanks) to approve the Minutes of the February 17, 2010 BoD meeting; Passed. Financial Reports Treasurer s Reports: No written financial report was presented for the period January through March 17th, 2010, as same had not been completed. The Treasurer indicated that at the next BoD meeting he will have, as an agenda item, the proposed 2010 annual budget, for BoD approval, which proposed budget will be circulated prior to the next BoD meeting. The Treasurer indicated that it would be a good idea to have a BoD meeting in January of each year, primarily to deal with the proposed budget for the then current year. The BoD, by consensus, agreed to hold a BoD meeting next January, on a date in January to be determined later this year. The Treasurer indicated that the 2010 March Memories Race event at VIR will show an operating loss of at least $7,500, and as much as $10,000, based upon his estimate of event expenses yet to come in, related to the March race. OLD BUSINESS The RE has indicated that he has one proposal in hand for an upgrade to the Region s website and for the promotion of the Region s events. The RE is soliciting additional proposals for same and proposes to wait until next month s (April) BoD meeting before considering all proposals which he then has in hand, regarding upgrades to the Region s website and for the promotion of the Region s events. Advertising Rates for The Bulletin NEW BUSINESS 1. Refund request from March Memories. An entrant did not run any part of the March, 2010, ECR event for which he had registered and paid, but which member failed to withdraw from by the specified time; the BoD is inclined to refund his entry fee less the Region s costs associated with the race entry, i.e. the ECR fee, insurance, etc., which costs total about $75. The RE suggested that in this case additional consideration be given because of an unused entry fee which this member had previously won, and had not used. Motion, made and seconded, to grant his request for a refund, to this member, of his ECR race entry fee less the out of pocket costs incurred by the Region for this race entry, of about $75.00; Passed. 2. Membership Drive Contest. Bruce Dover advises of the signs that the Region puts up at the track near some of the corner stations, inviting spectators to inquire about being a corner worker at the Region s SCCA races. The BoD discussed this matter and suggested that it should be budgeted (cost of the signs and information cards) as an expense (a budget item) under the Publicity Committee s budget. The BoD discussed the Membership Drive Contest and solicited anyone who wanted to volunteer to head up the Membership Drive Contest. REPORTS 1. 10 Coordinator, reported that 13 people attended the Chapter meeting in March, wherein they discussed the February SOLO event and the upcoming PDX event at VIR. 2. Triangle Chapter: James Shanks, Chapter Coordinator, advised that 33 people attended the last Chapter meeting wherein they discussed the previous BoD meeting and the upcoming race event in March, at VIR. 3. West Chapter: John Lindquist, Chapter Coordinator, advised that 14 people attended the last Chapter meeting wherein a new (former) member, Tim Victor, attended; the members present discussed the upcoming March race at VIR and the Raleigh car show. Committees: 1. Awards: No report. 2. Banquet: The Banquet Committee suggested two dates in January, 2011, the 8th and the 15th, as potential annual banquet dates; the BoD authorized Brad Draughon to select one of these dates, based upon the best circumstances related to a site, for the event. 3. Competition Board: Heather Powers, Assistant RE, reports the PDX had 37 students at the March PDX event, and it was reported that each driver had a very good time. She also reports that the Region is trying to work with the South Carolina Region on joint PDX programs at, potentially, Roebling Road and/or Kershaw. 4. SOLO Committee: Brad Draughon, Committee Chairman, reports that the first SOLO event had 83 entries. The next SOLO event is scheduled for March 26 and 27. The Committee advises that novice SOLO schools will be held in conjunction with some of the upcoming SOLO events in PDX/TT: No report. 6. Membership: James Shanks, Membership Chairman, indicates that the Region s present membership is 785 and that one of its new members is Mr. Josh Lief, the General Manager of VIR. Mr. Lief s support of the Region is highly appreciated. 7. Publicity: The Raleigh car show last weekend The Bulletin Page 10 July 2010

was considered a success, wherein SCCA brochures were handed out. A discussion as to having a membership booth at the GrandAm Rolex race at VIR on April was discussed. The Region will confer with the track about the possibility of having a booth to promote NCR- SCCA SCCA race events, including, in particular, spectator events to be held at VIR by the North Carolina Region in Mark Senior and John Uftring will work on this project. James Shanks thanked the members who worked the Raleigh car show, which workers were mainly members of the Region s BoD. Blair Stitt inquired as to SCCA promotional materials to use with the Angels Among Us charity event. He indicated that 500 flyers would cost about $250. Consideration was given to having a sufficient number of brochures printed for car shows and other NCR-SCCA promotional booths. James Shanks suggested we also have a video of activities at the track. Ginny Condrey advises that National SCCA has produced a SCCA promotional tape, at a cost of about $10, which we can show at car shows and at other promotional booths. The RE suggested that the Region should develop a package of display materials and equipment to use at car shows, etc., to attract volunteer workers, which display materials and equipment could be used multiple times, at future car shows and other promotional booths located at different types of events. 8. Charities: The last NCR race was scheduled to support the Boy Scouts fund, which event raised about $250 from the lunch time drive around at the March Memories Race event. Normal drive arounds raise approximately $500, but the normal drive arounds include two days (Sat. and Sun.), whereas the March event schedule only permitted a drive around on one of the two days, because of the PDX schedule. Further consideration will be given to funding the Boy Scout fund by linking same to another race event in the future. 9. Miscellaneous: Mark Senior thanked all those members who helped with the March PDX event, including the race officials who assisted with the PDX event, the Region s first PDX event at VIR.
