1 Inside QT: Officers Notes & Calendar Redline Race series TMCCC series 2013 IFO Deep Six Buick vs Ford A blast from the past Officers : 18th Annual Buick VS Ford Shootout in Noble, Oklahoma We did get beat by the Fords pretty good this year but our LSPBC members did have some good runs. I know Carl Brimer ran a best ET in the range in his nice STS-V, pretty damn good for a 5K pound car. Geoff Newton took his 87 GN down to a 109mph on 23lbs of boost with hardly any tuning. This car will be in the 11 s easy. Thanks to all who came out and supported our club and the event. Well folks, it s that time of year again! The season is winding down and we can start either repairing everything we tore up this year or planning the big winter modifications. Or if you re one of the few people that can actually leave your car alone, put it away for the winter and have it ready for next season. Either way it s been a fun season with some new faces along the way and some great events throughout the year. For those involved with Power Tour that was a trip that will not be forgotten, and it was great to see how many Turbo Buicks were on that. As for our Redline race series, I think this is the most entries I ve seen since I ve been in the club so that s great! There was some very good racing and points chasing going on and of course, some great hanging out at the track. It was great to meet some of the new members that joined up this year too and get to see their cars. The dyno event went well and I think would be a great event to make more regular for us as a club to, everyone who came out for that had a blast. I always hate to see the season wind down because that means we don t get to get together with the cars as often and hangout, but there are still a few more events to make it to before it s all over! And don t forget we always have the Christmas party to look forward to as well! It was a great season and I m glad you all participated with us, and hope you can all make it back next year! Don t forget, just because there aren t any events over the winter months doesn t mean we still can t be Going Fast With Class!! These are currently out of stock. Stay tuned coming soon. Welcome back old members and new members for 2013! Darren Gibbs B371

5 2013 Redline Race Series Rules $10.00 (paid to LSPBC) to bracket race, you must be a current LSPBC member to enter and your vehicle must be Buick or Buick powered in order to be eligible for Buick points. Vehicles that are Non Buick or Non Buick powered will be eligible for Non Buick points (see Points below) Memberships and renewals are available on location. 1. Street cars only*, No delay boxes, and No throttle stops are allowed. 2. Any tire is ok. DO NOT burnout past the starting line. This will result in an automatic disqualification. 3. You may race any brand/model of car you want and win money at the monthly races and be eligible for the point series. 4. You must be a paid club member to run brackets. Club dues are $25 annually. 5. The monthly payouts are pending car count. Therefore, more cars = a higher payout. Payouts are for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places. All time trials will be run out of lane 4 with one exception. If you are running street tires and get in line early, 6:30pm, please line up in lane 3 for your first pass. Redline officials like to run cars with slicks for the first pairings from lane 4. We do not want to block lane 4 with street tire cars early. All time trials will be out of lane 4 after 7pm for LSPBC racers Rule Additions: 1. All LSPBC racers are required to meet in the pits with the race director at 8:30pm to pay their entry fee and draw for positions. Drawing order will determine your position on the standard "Sportsman Ladder" rather than your qualifying time. Do not be late or you will be left out!* 2. The ladder will be set up prior to 9:00pm to determine the pairings or bye run if applicable. 3. The higher seeded racer for each pairing will have lane choice. 4. All eliminations will be out of lanes 5 and 6 and start at 9pm sharp. 5. Breaking or not showing will result in an automatic loss and a win for your opponent. You must stage and break the starting line beams under your vehicle's own power to receive credit. 6. Redline has requested that the racers to be ready to run in 5 minutes from when they call us to the lanes. Therefore, know who your opponent for the next round is as soon as possible. Buick or Buick Powered Points: 10 points are earned for each round in which you make a qualified run. 5 bonus points will awarded to the event winner. Non-Buick or Non-Buick Powered Points: 9 points are earned for each round in which you will make a qualified run. 4 bonus points will be awarded to the event winner. All points are assigned to the driver: This will allow a driver to cumulatively earn either Buick or Non Buick points at each event based on the vehicle registered. A driver will not be eligible for both Buick and Non-Buick points at the same race event. The top three season points leaders will be awarded at the year end LSPBC Christmas party. 8 TMCCC 2013 Welcome to the Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge. The TMCCC is the largest club against club racing series in the country and possibly the world. It was founded by a group of muscle car owners that liked to race their cars but didn't want to race in a weekly bracket series. Soon after the first few events, more clubs in the area started showing interest and before you knew it, the series had grown into 9 events covering most of north Texas and Oklahoma. With car counts exceeding 200 at many of the races, we have proven that muscle cars are here to stay. Every club races for points to see who are the true champions in the muscle car world and a driver reward program tracks individual drivers points to see who is the best in each class. Each year there is a rewards banquet where the top clubs and drivers are honored and presented with very nice trophies and prizes. The overall points champion also receives free entry to all of the next years races. 13 A path less traveled by Mike Mahalik When people think of Turbo Buicks, most probably get one of two images in their head. They either think of concourse level show cars that are all original or drag strip terrors that look stock and run in the 10 s. Of course those are two extremes but most of the Turbo Buicks we come across these days are some variation of those two; either mostly stock with some bolt on upgrades or full out race car that s no longer street legal. Then there s the path I ve decided on, not really a huge departure from the mostly stock/bolt on route but I m doing something with my GN that very few do. I m building my car for autocross. For those of you unaware of what autocross is, it s a time trial event where you run a course built out of cones; normally in a large parking lot like what you would find at Texas Motor Speedway. Cars are classed by performance so you won t have a ZR1 Corvette and a bone stock Honda Civic going head to head, although these matches may happen in the modified classes. There s a place for everything in autocross, from someone s daily driver sedan to full out track cars and everything in between. I started auto crossing the Buick a few years ago in the stock class where it fit, which was essentially anything American and rear wheel drive with a V8. Most of the class is made up of Camaros, Mustangs, pretty much any muscle car you can imagine and a large number of the newer late model offering as well. The Grand National as always looked like a bit of a misfit in this class as it was the only vehicle in F Stock with a V6. Believe it or not I could hold my own against newer cars like the GTO s and some Mustangs and Camaros as well. It was very fun and educational to drive the GN in events like this, learning all of the shortcomings of an original, 25 year old suspension. These cars really don t handle as badly as people imagine either, but after a season or so I wanted more out of the handling department. It was time to start upgrading. I ve always had the goal of building the car the way I envisioned it while retaining a mostly stock appearance, that way the few people that do what the GN is don t really expect anything out of it at an autocross. After looking at options to piece together an entire suspension from cheaper offerings of mismatched parts, I decided to go the totally opposite route and buy the really good stuff. I chose to go with Detroit Speed and Engineering products as I have yet to read anything negative about them (other than the pricing) and I can say it was the best decision to date I have made for the car. Other than the few sets of frame braces that are available for these cars, the only major suspension upgrade I have made so far is the Detroit Speed shocks and springs, which drop the car 2 inches from stock. Generally shocks and springs aren t a major event on most cars, but I can t convey how much it transformed the GN. Even with 25 year old bushings and the rest of the stock suspension the car handled so much better it was really impressive. Continued next page
14 I spent the 2012 autocross season (the few events I made it to) learning how hard I could push the car and quickly realized that the BF Goodrich Radial TA s were now the problem, I was at the limit of those tires. So again, wanting to stay stock appearing I had an extra set of T-Type wheels around so I bought a set of BF Goodrich G Force Rival tires (I believe the first set in Texas as they were brand new at the time). They weren t quite the size I wanted but 15 inch sizes were limited so I figured I d give it a shot. It was another gamble worth taking! What the shocks and springs did for the suspension the tires did it again, I could actually push the suspension now and the tires would hang in there. The Rivals really are amazing street tires; I still have yet to find the limit of them on the GN, even running the Texas Motor Speedway road course in rainy conditions! So armed with the new tires, the 2013 season was a blast. I was now running in E Street Prepared which is where all of the American V8 cars move up to when they are too heavily modified for stock classes but not in the full race classes yet. I made it to five SCCA events, one of which was the infield road course at Texas Motor Speedway along with the Fall Good Guys Autocross at TMS as well. For the SCCA events I took one 1 st place and four 2 nd place finishes, I was very pleased with that! I beat a number of late model Mustangs as they seem to be the most common in this class and all cars in this class have some suspension and engine work done too. At the Good Guys event I finished 7 th out of 29 cars and those were all late model vehicles. At that event I ve beaten numerous Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes, and even some CTS-Vs of both generations! It s neat to see how many people get excited to see a GN at these events or in the case of the SCCA events look at me like I m nuts and at the wrong event, but after a few runs every body realizes the car can hang in there. At the last Good Guys Autocross there was a guy in a second generation CTS-V and he started complaining to me that he can never beat GN s anywhere. He said he always gets beat by them at the drag strip so he figured this would be his chance to beat one, well I finished about 3 seconds ahead of him! He was going nuts! The Grand National gets respect anywhere it goes these days, but after a season of doing pretty well at the SCCA events, it s amazing how much respect that crowd gives it. When I first started running with them, very few people would ask about the car other than why I wasn t at the drag strip. The last few events I ve had numerous people telling me how much they love watching my runs and how the GN is one of the most entertaining cars at the events. It s a whole new crowd to teach about the Dark Side! All in all I ve had a blast the last few years getting the car to the stage it s at, and I have the rest of the Detroit Speed product to get under my car still so it s a work in progress, like they all are. Who knows, maybe one of these years I ll make it to a national SCCA event and really stir things up! It s fun to take the path less traveled in the car that I love and expose even more people to the greatness that is Turbo Buicks.
