4 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings to all. The Indy 500 Section is still alive and kickin! We ve had several events this year and will soon have our second newsletter complete and out to all our members. Thanks to all who have been helping and participating and as we continue to get the word out about our new activities, we ll see more and more members participate. We had a very good turnout for our section's breakfast at Yaiyai's Pancake House and visit to the Ray Skillman Auto Museum in Greenwood. The museum is incredible with cars you see frequently running through a Classic Car Auction. We were fortunate enough to have, what I think was, Ray's manager in charge of the museum and restoration section. He knew everything about restoring classic cars to win at auto shows and showed us many of the projects currently in the works at his shop. I definitely recommend a visit here! Dave and Ida Swenby joined Sara and I at Cincinnati Section s Poker Run Rally in French Lick. There are few places to compare to the West Baden Resort for a place to stay, and despite the weather, Cincy Section put together a great weekend and it was enjoyed by all. Dave became the unofficial (or official) photographer for the weekend and took a lot of pictures. I m guessing they ll be posted to the Cincinnati website. We have some interesting events scheduled for summer. It seems every last Saturday of the month, Gateway Classic Cars hosts Cars and Coffee at its West 96th Street showroom. Collectors are invited to show off their cars from 9am - Noon, come inside to have coffee and pastries and then marvel at the great collection of vintage cars in Gateway's showroom which are all for sale on consignment. I've set a date of May 27th for any members to get together there around 10am. We can show off our Mercedes, have some morning snacks, tour the showroom and then pick a restaurant from one of the many nearby on North Michigan Road for a group lunch. Just a last minute, informal get together for us to meet and get to know more of our members. The SVRA comes to IMS the weekend of June 17th. They will have a car show in the midfield and you'll get to drive your Mercedes around the track when the car show wraps up. You'll also get to see manufacturer exhibits and the racing of vintage race cars. The day wraps up with a concert by Guess Who. I'm sure many of you remember "who" they were. It should be a fun day (and includes admission for Sunday events as well). Cost for the weekend is $75 for two tickets (if you make reservations before May 15 use PROMO Code INDY17 for a $10 discount). Sara and I went last year and had a great time. We will be going back this year, too. July 15th we'll rerun the rally I set up last year. We didn't get it advertised soon enough and only 3 cars drove it -- Ken Salter, Kevin Williams and I with our wives. It was really a fun day and Kevin and I decided to try it again. We'll meet at the IN Grand Casino, have lunch at a great small town pub in St Paul and end up at vintage gift and locally made cherry furniture store in Homer, IN. Please join us for this Section 500 Event. Mark your calendars for our 10th Anniversary Show 'n Shine at West Park in Carmel Sunday, August 6th from 12-3pm. As it is our 10th Anniversary of this event, we're going to try and make it extra special. Also Kevin is planning a day for us at the New Castle Go Kart Track on September 9th. Tentative plans are to meet mid afternoon, ply our skills racing around a motocross type track and then have dinner at a nice restaurant nearby. More information will be in our August newsletter but please mark your calendars now to join in on the fun. I'd like to thank everyone at the body shop at Mercedes of Indianapolis. After a glowing recommendation from Ken Salter, I took my Cabriolet in for a repaint of the car's upper surfaces. The car's paint sustained some damage I missed before purchase, and Mercedes Indianapolis did a fabulous job restoring it to like new! Thanks again to all the great folks there. We still are in need of a Membership Director and a Facebook Coordinator. Also, I would really welcome any help someone familiar with Publisher could give me. You may have noticed my inserting and cutting and pasting skills into the newsletter are not very good. I m trying my best but assistance would be greatly appreciated in many of the tasks it takes to make The Indy 500 Section run and hopefully grow. We still thank Peter Emslander for helping out with our data processing and Kevin is working to keep our website up to date. Please let us know if you have any suggestions for events for our group or anything that would be interesting to our members and attract new members. There are many activities from nearby sections that we can participate in so don t forget to check the MBCA website and calendar frequently for this information. Meet at the IN Grand Casino in Shelbyville, IN for a country drive and lunch at a vintage small town pub. See a covered bridge rebuilt after it was destroyed in a flood in a small Indiana almost Ghost Town. We ll end up in a fabu lous gift shop and custom built cherry furniture store in Homer, IN. Only 3 cars made the run last year but it was it was such a good day we decided to try it again when more people had time to get it on their calendars. Aug 6 Sep 9 Our 10th Anniversary Show N Shine at West Park, 2700 W 116th St, Carmel, IN. Join us at noon to show off your Benz and enjoy a great BBQ lunch. Please bring a salad or dessert to share. We re going to make it special for our 10th Anniversary. Section 500 Go Karting in New Castle, IN. We ll be meeting mid-afternoon at the go kart track just south of I-70 in New Castle to drive their motocross go kart track. After racing each other on the track we ll meet for dinner at a res taurant near the track for dinner.
