4 GENERAL RULES 1. This accredited show is being held and judged under the rules and regulations of The American Iris Society as set forth in the Handbook for Judges and Show Officials, 7 th Edition, 2007, and subsequent rules and regulations approved by The American Iris Society Board of Directors. These rules and regulations may not be violated. 2. Accredited judges of The American Iris Society will judge all entries in the Horticulture Division(s) and the design division. Judges decisions will be final. Any award may be withheld at their discretion. Judges will vote for Queen of Show and 1 st Runner Up by secret ballot. 3. Entries will be received from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on April 21, Specimens arriving after 10:00 a.m. may be exhibited for Display only. 4. Judging will begin at 10:15 a.m. 5. Only specifically authorized personnel will be allowed in the show area during judging. 6. The Classification Committee may divide, sub-divide, combine or create groups as necessary. 7. Youth exhibitors (persons under 19 years of age) may enter exhibits in the Youth Horticulture Division OR the Adult Horticulture Division but not both in the same show. 8. Show judges and/or their immediate family are not permitted to exhibit in the show 9. All care will be exercised, but the AIS, the Show Committee, members of neither the JCI&DS nor the J.N. Long Cultural Arts Complex will be held responsible for loss or damage of an exhibitor s property. 10. Exhibits will remain in place until 4 p.m. on April 15, All exhibits must be removed by 4:30 p.m. SPECIAL RULES HORTICULTURE DIVISIONS 1. This is a VARIETY/CULTIVAR show, staged according to type and in alphabetical order within the various sections and groups. Each variety constitutes a separate group and must be correctly named. No unnamed variety may be exhibited except seedlings which may be entered under seedling number. 2. Division, Section, and Group numbers and name of variety (name or number in Seedling Division) must appear on the entry card. The entry card is to be prepared by the exhibitor. A show entry sheet must be completed by each exhibitor and submitted to the entry clerk at the time the specimens are left for entry. 3. The horticulture and seedling divisions are open to any grower. 4. Entries must have been grown and entered in person by the exhibitor whose name appears on the entry tag. Members of a family may exhibit from the same garden An exhibitor may enter a seedling originated by another person but the hybridizer s name and the seedling name or number must appear on the entry card. 6. Exhibitors may enter only one stalk of a variety in single specimen and seedling sections, but may enter any number of varieties. 7. Unnamed stalks (except seedlings), potted exhibits or labeled irises grown by another person are not eligible for AIS ribbons and awards, but may be displayed on the table marked FOR DISPLAY ONLY. 8. The exhibitor will provide their own green containers (bottles or vases) for all entries. 9. Exhibitors may use unobtrusive supporting material in the mouth of the bottle or vase to improve the appearance of the stalk. 10. All entries will be placed on the tables by the Placement Committee only. Exhibitors are not
5 permitted on the show floor until all placements are complete. 11. An English Box will consist of 6 individual flowers of the same classification of irises. All blooms must be the same classification (Tall Bearded, Spuria, Etc.) and colors must be harmonious. (Not eligible for Best of Show Award). The base shall be 12 x 20 x 2 green Styrofoam with orchid bus vases for the blooms (all furnished by the exhibitor). Names must be placed under each specimen. Cultivars shall be used. Only named 12. All first place entries will be considered for the Color Class awards and will be placed by color as ruled by the Classification Chair using the Registration and Introduction Checklist as published by the AIS. DIVISION I HORTICULTURE SECTION A: Tall Bearded (TB) Single stalk SECTION B: Median, single stalk Group 1: Border Bearded (BB) Group 2: Miniature bearded (MTB) Group 3: Intermediate (IB) Group 4: Standard Dwarf bearded (SDB) SECTION C: Aril/Arilbred, single stalk (AR)(AB) SECTION D: Spuria, single stalk (SPU) SECTION E: Louisiana, single stalk (LA) SECTION F: Siberian, single stalk (SIB) SECTION G: Species, single stalk (SPEC) SECTION H: Bulbous, Single stalk (Not eligible for Best of Show) SECTION I. Historic, single stalk (1988 or earlier & must be identified by year of introduction) SECTION J: Space Age, single stalk SECTION K: Novelty Bearded (MDB, Broken Color, Flat, etc.) SECTION L: Collections (Not eligible for Best of Show Award) Group 1: Bearded 3 stalks, 1 variety Group 2: Bearded 3 stalks, 3 varieties Group 3: Beardless 3 stalks, 1 variety Group 4: Beardless 3 stalks, 3 varieties Group 5: English box Group 6: Miscellaneous and collections not meeting any other criteria DIVISION I-Y YOUTH SCHEDULE-HORTICULTURE Mark entries Y and state Exhibitor s age on the entry cards and registration sheet. Exhibitors must be under nineteen (19) years of age to compete in this division. Schedule Division I. Use Horticulture REGION 17 HYBRIDIZER A Region 17 Hybridizer certificate will be given to the Best Specimen by a Region 17 Hybridizer. It will be up to the Exhibitor to mark their entry tags with a T in the upper right corner for entries to be judged for this award. 4
6 DIVISION II SEEDLINGS Any un-introduced iris of any type. Seedlings must be entered under seedling number or registered name and must be made in the name of the owner or originator of the clone. (Not eligible for Best of Show) DIVISION III ARTISTIC DESIGN ARTISTIC DESIGN RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. An exhibitor may enter only one exhibit per class, but may enter as many classes as desired. 2. Exhibitors under age 19 may enter in adult classes in addition to the youth classes. 3. An Iris or Irises must be the Dominant flower in each Artistic arrangement. 4. Fresh plant material must predominate in all arrangements unless otherwise stated in the schedule. 5. A minimum of dried, treated and/or weathered material are permitted. 6. Fresh plant material cannot be treated in any manner. 7. No artificial foliage, fruit and flowers are permitted. 8. Fruits and vegetables are allowed. Cutting of vegetables and fruits will be allowed and should be sealed with saran wrap, etc. 9. Bases and accessories are permitted in all classes. 10. Use no flower that is on a conservation list, unless grown by the Exhibitor and noted on a 3 x5 design card. 11. The flag of the United States must not be displayed in a design. The flag may be displayed above or in front of the design. 12. National Flower Show Judges may not compete against Amateurs in the Artistic Division. 13. Living plants with exposed roots and/or moss are permitted in designs. However, plants growing in containers are not permitted. 14. Explanatory cards may be used on all exhibits to aid the Judges and to add to the enjoyment of the viewer. Preferably, they should be 3 x5 in size. Interpretive arrangements must have such cards. 15. All classes will be staged in niches 24 wide, 12-½ deep and 36 high. It is suggested that the background be draped with fabric or covered in some manner. 16. The panel of Horticulture Judges will judge the Artistic Design and the Judges decision will be final. ARTISTIC DESIGN SCHEDULE THEME World s Fair of Iris CLASS 1: New York City Blue City CLASS 2: Chicago White City CLASS 3: San Antonio Sunshine City CLASS 4: Seattle Rainbow City * *Novice: Anyone who has not won a blue ribbon in the Artistic Design Division Youth** CLASS 5: It s A Small World** ** Youth: Must be under 19 yrs. old 5
7 DIVISION IV EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS 1. Exhibitors must reserve space at least 2 weeks before show with show chairman. 2. Exhibitor may present any topic pertaining to Irises, but an Exhibitor may only enter one educational exhibit in the show. Chairman must approve all exhibits. Show 3. Each entry shall constitute a separate class. 4. The panel of Horticulture Judges will judge the educational exhibits. DIVISION IV-Y YOUTH EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS Mark entries Y and state Exhibitor s age on the entry cards and registration sheet. Exhibitors must be under nineteen (19) years of age to compete in this division. described in Division IV. Follow rules as DIVISION V PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTOGRAPHY RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. All photography exhibitors must enter their photographs between 8 A.M. and 9:45 A. M. on Saturday April 21, All entries must be picked up at the close of the show at 4 P.M. Any photograph not picked up by 4:30 P.M. may become the property of the Johnson County Iris & Daylily Society unless prior arrangements are made. 2. Exhibitors are allowed a maximum of two (2) entries per section. 3. All photographs are to be in color and in an 8 x 10 format. 4. Photo Frames are to be 8 x 10, black, with easel back. No mats are to be used. Entry tags will be provided shall be filled out in blue or black ink only. 5. Photos should have a title or name. Could be name of variety or any name fitting the exhibit. 6. Photographs will be judged by a panel of Judges from the Cleburne Camera Club based on composition, use of color, and aesthetic value. 7. Photos must be taken by the exhibitor. 8. Photos need NOT be taken in the exhibitor s garden. 9. Image modification/manipulation: a) You may not add graphics (including borders), text, clip art, computer generated images or elements from other photographs. b) Some modifications may be made to your image in the photo editing program, as long as the modification is applied to the whole image. c) The use of Photoshop (or equivalent) is permitted if applied to the entire photograph and not just a part of the photograph. 10: Show officials will exercise all precautions for protecting exhibits, but neither they, the judges nor the J.N. Long Cultural Arts Complex will be responsible for any loss or damage that might occur. 6
8 Section A: Single Iris (Photograph of a single bloom of an iris) Section B: Iris Clump (Photograph of three or more blooms of the same iris) PHOTOGRAPHY SCHEDULE: Section C: Iris Garden (Photograph of a garden scene with irises as the dominant feature) DIVISION V-Y YOUTH PHOTOGRAPHY Mark entries Y and state Exhibitor s age on the entry cards and registration sheet. Exhibitors must be under nineteen (19) years of age to compete in this division. Use Photography Schedule Division V, Photography Rules and Regulations. DIVISION VI COMMERCIAL EXHIBITS Commercial Gardens of members of the Johnson County Iris and Daylily Society will be allowed to distribute price lists and other literature at tables available for this purpose, provided the member has attended five (5) or more meetings in the past year and has participated in the show and/or annual sale. There is no exception to this rule. AWARDS American Iris Society Awards 1. Ribbons: Each specimen can be awarded only one ribbon. One First (Blue), one Second (Red), and one Third (White) place ribbon may be given to each cultivar in any given Section except in the Seedling Division. As many Honorable Mention (Pink) ribbons may be awarded as the panel of Judges deems worthy. 2. Best Specimen of Show, Adult and Youth (Seedlings, Bulbous, English Box, and Collection Sections are not eligible): Large purple rosette and certificate. 3. Runner-up to Best Specimen of Show: Small purple rosette. (Each runner-up must have earned a first place ribbon.) 4. Horticultural Sweepstakes (most blue ribbons): Silver Medal and Certificate and large purple rosette. (Must be at least five (5) exhibitors and at least twenty (20) cultivars.) In the event of a tie for any medal or certificate award, second place award ribbons (red) will be counted. If a tie still exists, third place ribbons (white) are to be counted, and if a tie still persists, honorable mention award ribbons (pink) are to be counted. If such procedure does not determine a winner, duplicate silver medals (and NO bronze medal will be awarded. If the tie involves the bronze medal, duplicate bronze medals will be awarded. 5. Horticultural Sweepstakes Runner-up (second most blue ribbons): Bronze Medal and Certificate. 7
9 6. Best Seedling Purple rosette and Exhibition Certificate. An Exhibition Certificate (EC) will also be awarded to any seedling receiving five or more votes from fully accredited AIS judges attending the show. 7. A Section Medal Certificate may be awarded in each Section where there are at least three exhibitors and at least five cultivars in the Section. 8. Awards for Colors - Small Rosettes will be awarded to the Best Specimen in the following color categories: Best Amoena Best Apricot Best Orange Best Banded Best Black Best Pink Best BiColor Best Blue Best Red Best BiTone Best Brown Best Purple Best Blend Best Gold Best Violet Best Neglecta Best Gray Best White Best Plicata Best Green Best Yellow Best Variegata Best Spaceage Best by Texas Hybridizer 9. Educational Exhibit may receive the Bronze Medal Certificate for outstanding Educational Exhibit. 10. Commercial Exhibit may receive the Bronze Medal Certificate for outstanding Commercial Exhibit. 11. Artistic Design: Best Design of Show (adult): Large purple rosette and certificate. Artistic Sweepstakes (adult): Large purple rosette and certificate. Best Design of Show (youth): Small purple rosette and certificate. Artistic Sweepstakes (youth): Small purple rosette and certificate. The Earl Johnson Award - (for members of the JCI&DS only) will be awarded to the Best Specimen of Show. This is a traveling award and may not be awarded if the exhibitor is not a member of the JCI&DS. The name of the winner will be engraved on back of plaque. Plaque remains in possession of JCI&DS. Queen (Best) of Show small plaque awarded to Best Specimen of Show (keeper award). Winner does not have to be JCI&DS member. The Charter Members Award - (for members of the JCI&DS only) will be awarded to the Runner-Up of Best Specimen of Show. This is a AWARDS Johnson County Iris & Daylily Society DIVISION I - HORTICULTURE traveling award and may not be awarded if the exhibitor is not a member of the JCI&DS. The Peggy Cathey Best Space Age Specimen of Show - (for members of the JCI&DS only) will be awarded to the Best Space-Age Specimen of Show. This is a traveling award and may not be awarded if the exhibitor is not a member of the JCI&DS. The name of the winner will be engraved on back of plaque. Plaque remains in possession of JCI&DS. The Best Specimen by a Region 17 Hybridizer shall be awarded a purple Rosette and Texas Hybridizer Certificate to the Best Specimen by a Regional 17 hybridizer DIVISION III ARTISTIC DESIGN The JCI&DS BEST ARTISTIC DESIGN AWARD (for members of the JCI&DS only) shall be awarded to the Best Artistic Design 8 winner of the show. This is a traveling award and may not be awarded if the exhibitor is not a member of the JCI&DS. The name of the winner
10 will be engraved on back of plaque. Plaque remains in possession of JCI&DS. BEST ARTISTIC DESIGN AWARD - small plaque shall be awarded to the Best Artistic Design winner of the show. Winner does not have to be JCI&DS member. DIVISION V PHOTOGRAPHY 1: Section Awards Entries will be given Blue, Red, White and Pink club ribbons based upon the judge s evaluation. A Rosette will be presented for the Most Outstanding Photograph in each section. 2: Most Outstanding Photograph Overall A Rosette and a small plaque will be awarded for the Most Outstanding Photograph Overall from the Most Outstanding Photographs from Sections A-C. Winner does not have to be JCI&DS member. The Mary Huggins Award (for members of the JCI&DS only) shall be awarded in the youth 9 division for Best Specimen of Show. This is a traveling award and may not be awarded if the exhibitor is not a member of the JCI&DS. The name of the winner will be engraved on back of plaque. Plaque remains in possession of JCI&DS.
11 DIVISION III ARTISTIC DESIGN-Youth The Bob Alexander Award (for members of the JCI&DS only) shall be awarded in the youth division for Best Artistic Design winner. This is a traveling award and may not be awarded if the exhibitor is not a member of the JCI&DS. The name of the winner will be engraved on back of plaque. JCI&DS. Plaque remains in possession of Best Artistic Design Award-small plaque shall be awarded to the Best Artistic Design winner of the show. Winner does not have to be JCI&DS member. DIVISION V-YOUTH PHOTOGRAPHY 1: Section Awards Entries will be given Blue, Red, White and Pink club ribbons based upon the judges evaluation. A Rosette will be presented for the Best Photograph in each section. 2: Most Outstanding Youth Photograph Overall A Rosette and a small plaque will be awarded for the Most Outstanding Youth Photograph Overall selected from the best photographs from Sections A-C. NOTE TO EXHIBITORS Youth entries: Please remember to put a Y and age on all youth entry tags. All entries: To qualify for the Texas Hybridizer award, please put a big T in the upper right hand corner of your entry tag. (Adult and Youth). 12 PREPARING THE ENTRY TAG You must complete both the upper and the lower portions of the entry tag. After judging, the upper portion remains with your entry and the lower portion is removed to tabulate the Sweepstakes winner and to finalize the show report. 1. Division, Section: Use the Show Schedule to accurately enter the Division numeral and the Section letter for each entry. (See Fig. 1-5) 2. Group/Class: Use the Show Schedule to enter the Group/Class, if any. (See fig. 2) 3. Variety: For Divisions I, I-Y, & II, print the name of the cultivar or enter the seedling number. For Division I & I-Y, Section I Historic, in Variety enter the name of the cultivar and the year it was introduced. (See Fig. 3) For Division III & III-Y (See Fig. 4), IV & IV-Y, and Division V & V-Y, list a title for your exhibit. (See Fig. 5) 4. Youth exhibitors must mark entries Y and state exhibitor s age on the entry cards and Entry sheet. (See Fig. 4) 5. To compete for the Texas Hybridizers Award, a big T must appear in the upper right hand corner of the tag. (See fig. 1) This is for irises hybridized by Texas Hybridizers only (see list, page 10). 6. Exhibitor/Address: You may use pre-printed return address labels or print your first and last names plus your city and state. 7. Entry No.: Enter the Division numeral. (See Fig. 1-5) After completing the entry tag, fold the lower portion up. Tuck it under the tab so that the exhibitor s name and address are concealed during judging. The exhibits will be checked off as each is presented for entry and before Placement Committee takes them to the show tables. A copy of the Entry Sheet is provided at the end of this schedule. 11
