1 Johnson County Iris & Daylily Society News An affiliate of the American Iris Society and the American Hemerocallis Society Volume 14, Issue 9 April, 2017 Show Time! There will be no regular meeting this month. The annual Spring Iris show will be held on April 15 at the JN Long Cultural Arts Complex, 425 Granbury (behind HEB). Show entries should arrive between 8:00 and 9:45 a.m. You do not have to be a club member to enter the show. You must, however, know the name of the iris you are entering. Cut the stalk as close to the rhizome as possible, clean it up as best you can, put it in a green bottle (wine bottles work great) with a little water, and attach a completed entry tag to the bottle with a rubber band. Show schedules, entry tags and other supplies will be available at the show. Show schedules are also available online at: johnsoncountyirisanddaylilysociety.org/wp-content/ uploads/2014/02/2017-jcids- Show-Schedule.pdf Judging will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. This year s judges will be Connie Ford, Bonnie Nichols and Hooker Nichols. The show will open to the public from 1:00-4:00 p.m. In conjunction with the show, there will be lots of potted irises for sale. Come look at the beautiful irises on display, then take several potted, ready to grow iris plants home to enjoy for years to come. Iris Sale by Gailmae Suite The Iris show plant sale will be from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Please have your potted Irises at the show before the judging begins at 10:00 a.m. Each pot should contain at least 2 fans of the same Iris. Each pot should be clearly marked with the name of the Iris and year of introduction. I plan to bring at east 75 pots. Thanks to all who donate. Please let Peggy know at least 4 days prior to the show what you will be bringing so photos of each iris for sale will be available. 2 Officer and Committee Chair Reports President s Report by Vicki Howard No workday at Winston Patrick McGregor Park this month because of our Iris Show. Feel free to weed the iris gardens at JN Long while the show judging is going on. Program Chair Report by Kathy Wade Iris Show Membership Report by Anita Goodale The Johnson County Iris & Daylily Society met for their monthly meeting Saturday, March 11, 2017 in the conference room of the United Cooperative Services building in Cleburne. Twenty-two members and two guests enjoyed fun, food and fellowship. Guests were: Savana Howard and Sue Walker. Show Report by Peggy Cathey Well, it is almost time for our annual Iris Show. We ask that all who can, please come help with the set-up on Friday, April 14 from 3-5 p.m. It shouldn t take a lot of time to get the tables set up, covered, and signage put out in preparation for the entries. Hope all of you will consider bringing a few flowers to enter in the competition for Queen of Show. We need lots of color to have a successful show and for all our guests to see all the beautiful colors irises come in. We also need more of you to opt to make an artistic design. We have a really easy topic this year. You wouldn t even need to have an accessory to make it work. Following are the classes and the spaces that still need to be filled. If you can fill one, please give me a call and let me know so we can allocate a space for you. Class 1: White as Snow 1. Anita Goodale 2. Dan Cathey 3. Class 2: Here Comes the Sun 1. Brian Goodman 2. Peggy Cathey 3. Class 3: Stormy 1. Randy Thomas 2. Peggy Cathey 3. Class 4: Purple Rain (Novice) 1. Mary Keeth 2. Vicki Howard 3. Class 5: Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Youth) 1. Abbie Howard 2. 3 Page 3 Secretary Report by Vickie Rigby MARCH MEETING (Program: Iris Show Entry Prep by Hooker Nichols): The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by President Vicki Howard. The minutes of prior meetings were approved, as well as treasurer s report, which was part of the newsletter (and a copy of which is attached to these minutes in the formal minute book of the Club.) There were no changes or objections. Approximately 22 members and 2 guests enjoyed a most informative program provided by Hooker Nichols who has been in the business a LONG time. He provided not only information but a demonstration of what should and should not be done for a perfect entry. He reminded us that one very important item is to READ the show rules and guidelines as they can differ from club to club and show to show. His talk was most interesting and helpful, especially to us newcomers. Many thanks to Tom Burseen who provided the show prep stalks. Now if we can only put into practice what Hooker so expertly demonstrated. Hooker was given specific instructions by Tom Burseen to compliment all the Johnson County cooks who provide a most excellent buffet of food at every meeting. Thank you Tom. After his presentation Hooker provided handouts of upcoming events for the Iris Society of Dallas, which included the Louisiana Iris Convention hosted by that Club. The show preparation demonstration was followed by food and then the business meeting. The drawing for AIS Membership was won by Kathy Wade and AHS Membership was won by Carol Greenhill. It was noted with much sadness that Micki Nellis had passed away after her fight with cancer. A memorial will be held at the JN Long Cultural Arts Complex sometime in April. Anita and Bill Goodale are preparing to have a Johnson County Iris and Daylily Society booth at the Relay for Life on May 5, As a part of that they are asking for anything iris related to become a part of a Club basket or baskets to raffle to raise funds for the Event. They are doing this on their own and their own time any donations would be helpful. Thank you Anita and Bill. The auction for donated irises was officiated by Glenn Huddleston as the auctioneer. Thanks to all who donated and purchased as it is a benefit to the Club treasury. President Vicki reminded all that the PARKS NEED WEEDING and after the meeting was adjourned all were invited to work for an hour at the McGregor park. A different location will be chosen for work each month. The Iris Show set for April 15, 2017 was discussed and everyone reminded to bring entries, volunteer for set up and clean up and consider entering an Artistic Design entry. More to come in the next newsletter Everyone helped to clean up and close up and those available also volunteered to weed at McGregor park. Respectfully submitted, Vickie Rigby, Secretary March Drawing Winners AIS MEMBERSHIP Kathy Wade AIS Winner AHS MEMBERSHIP RAFFLE Carol Greenhill AHS Winner Brian Goodman Region 6 Meeting (cont. from pg. 1) This information can also be accessed at: regional/details/ An exciting three days have been planned for our Region 6 members!
