1 Chapter J Gator News LA District Friends for Fun, Safety & Knowledge February 2019 Chapter Director s Letter Hello LA-J! I hope you all have had a chance to book your rooms for the Bluebonnet (April) and Smokeys (September) rides! If you haven t or need some information, please let us know! They are going to be great adventures! All of the LA-J Officers were in attendance at the district business meeting recently and have some exciting things to report! First, Louisiana has been selected by national to take the lead starting Groupworks. Groupworks is a website which provides a place for all GWRRA to connect. The plan is that this will provide us all with a central location to send and receive information pertaining to GWRRA, the district, and our local chapter. You should have all by now gotten an from the district with instructions on how to log in. If you haven t or are having problems, please let us know. We ll discuss more about this at the chapter meeting. We also discussed the District rally coming up April 4 th through 6 th. It s going to be a lot of fun so send in your registrations and get your rooms booked! Early registration ends March 1 st. If you need a registration form, you can download one from the district website, I ll also try to have a few at the upcoming ride and eat (Southern Spice on Ryan in Lake Charles) and at our next chapter meeting. In addition to the usual competitions, the chapter exhibit this year will be decorating a women s shoe for Mardi Gras. Following the rally, there will be a three day guided Cajun tour centered in Houma. Also, we ve turned in our Chapter Participation award information. Let s hope we WIN! On another note, the Colors Ride this year is scheduled for Saturday, March 16 th. More information will follow. And, last but definitely not least! Get ready for our Valentine s banquet in DeRidder on Saturday, February, 16 th. We ll be LEAVING the Wendy s in Moss Bluff at 11:00 am heading to DeRidder. Hamburgers will be served at noon. Ride the bikes if you can or take a car if the weather doesn t cooperate. This is a rain or shine event. Looking forward to seeing ya ll there! 4 Take a Motorcycle Class Whether you are thinking of taking a GWRRA Rider Ed class, an MSF class or any other training concerning riding your motorcycle, just take the class. Training beats ignorance every time. Even though you may be a rider with 30 years of riding or just getting the wind in your face, it pays to take formal training and here is why. When you go to a training such as an ARC or Trike class, you get the benefit of an instructor who has plenty of experience in training folks. They will make you think about the mechanics of your machine and how you interact with it and how you should react to different situations on the road. You will review techniques on slow speed maneuvering and things called the friction zone!!! All this will take place in a controlled environment, and the instructor/instructors are there to keep a close eye on you during every exercise. You will be able to practice these exercises till you are comfortable with executing them. Classroom seminars in GWRRA cover a lot of different subjects related to riding, be it night riding, co rider duties, helmet myths and many others. All these trainings help you--the rider and passenger--be safer on the road and will help you make those good decisions when you are confronted with having to make them. GWRRA Rider courses can offered at conventions or for your chapter as are chosen seminars. The seminars can be done at chapter meetings with the option to spread it out over a few meetings. 5 The ladies of Chapter LA-J enjoyed a weekend of crafts, good food and great fellowship at Toledo Bend. The guys gathered for grilled steaks and a great men s night while the ladies were away. 5
